We plan to go.

The price is right and we have only heard great things about
the ‘Canoe Club’.

We have yet to ever be disappointed at The Hop.
It is always a delight to attend.

This should be fun and we can decide what we want to see in the coming season, in addition to the yearly Christmas Revels.

Is There A Mountain Lion Living On Prospect Mountain Road, Alton, NH?

Having huffed and puffed 1.25 miles up Prospect Mountain Road, as I try to do 6 days a week, I was coming down, this morning, when the delightful lady, that owns the large blueberry farm, who we know quite well (and like) stopped me. It is always a pleasure to chat with her.

She was very concerned. She knows that I let Maya off the leash when I am past ‘the houses’ and that Teischan and Devanee sometimes walk up, albeit with Deanna and Ulysses.

She is sure that there is a mountain lion or bobcat living at the bottom of her field. It had been spotted this last Sunday, in the yard of the folks that live two houses down, across the road, chasing a flock of wild turkeys.

We quickly compared notes.

Here is the thing. Twice in the last month, the second time being last Friday, I had seen a ‘large’ dog-like animal crossing the road and heading into the Marsh.

The house in question, where this ‘critter’ was seen Sunday, is right next to that Marsh.

It appears that I am not the only one that has seen ‘something’ cross the road and heading into the Marsh.

But, now this is where we tend to diverge. Though not an expert, I am fairly au fait with mountain lions and Bobcats — albeit those in captivity. I used to be a very frequent visitor to the Squam Lakes Science Center that has both mountain lions and Bobcats. Deanna and I were there in 2003 or 2004 when they first brought in the two mountain lions cubs — who were but a few weeks old. In 2008, Teischan and I were visiting the Center at least once a month, during Spring/Summer, while Deanna did a merchandising job in Meredith. The Bobcats were Tesichan’s favorite.

The ‘larger’ critter, that I have seen, was not a mountain lion or Bobcat. Now that ‘she’ is saying that the animal seen on Sunday did not have a tail just compounds the issue.

My reaction, both times, as I told Deanna and the kids, when I came home was that it was either a coyote or a wolf.

I have been face-to-face with a grey wolf, 10′ apart, in Meredith, NH, on the railway tracks, in 1998. This was no accident. The wolf had come to see me, or to be more precise the two 8 week old Goldens that were with me. It was quite a confrontation. It eventually backed off, ran across the slope and started walking across the Lake. This was winter. Then I got my ultimate confirmation that this was a wolf, rather than a coyote (though I also poured over books and Web images to make sure). About 4 different snowmobiles nearly ‘capsized’ pulling U-turns when they saw this thing trotting across the ice. They would be going along, then they would pull a sharp U-turn to come back and have another look.

On Prospect Mountain, in each case, I was about 500′ away. When I got to the Marsh, I would stop and look to see if it was waiting for us. On Friday, Maya did some serious sniffing when we got to Marsh. She didn’t seem to be in anyway agitated or distressed, though I am not sure whether she knows what a wolf or coyote smells like or what threat they posses to her.

I have heard coyotes howling in the night — though earlier in the Spring.

I would LOVE IT if we had a mountain lion on Prospect Mountain.

I love big cats, but ONLY big cats. I am allergic in multiple ways to domestic cats.

Yes, I am aware of all the reports and stories, both ways, about mountain lions in NH. I think there is more consensus that we do have gray wolves. I like wolves too and I am thinking of getting one as my next dog.

So, this is just an update.

Comments Deanna has received on this post on Facebook — since she reposts some of these on her Facebook page.

School Board member Mr. Steve Miller, yet again proving that he is the only one on the board that on a consistent basis stands up for the kids, brought up the issue of the School Bus shenanigans on July 8, 2013, at last night’s ACS School Board Meeting. [How come WE were the only public attending?]

Thank YOU, Mr. Miller. Your efforts on behalf of the kids, as was also the case with bullying, is much appreciated.

Mr. Bill Lander, the Superintendent, said that he hadn’t had a chance to get to the bottom of it — since I had only e-mailed him a couple of hours prior to the meeting, after I had done my post (for the record).

But, Mrs. Sydney Leggett, the Principal, was happy to jump in and provide an update. She said that ONLY 1 kid was affected. Well it is on the ‘tape’, i.e., the video recording IF they ever get around to posting it (unedited).

Check the tape. Listen to what Mrs. Sydney Leggett, the Principal, says.

Why Bill Landers and the Principal forget that they are ‘on tape’ is a continuing mystery to me — unless, of course, they don’t give a damn, because they are not accountable to anyone.

So, Mrs. Leggett says ‘one child’. Well, we are aware of ONE CHILD, because Deanna got a call from the child himself asking her what he should do!

I, was told by Mrs. Pam Forbes (and I am now beyond trying to protect too many people as I was yesterday) that a ‘number of kids were involved‘. [That certainly sounded like there was MORE than 1.]

And here is another mother and she is pretty adamant. Images below. And yes, of course, I have the original unredacted versions. These discussions take place on Facebook.

Well you don’t have to have done Singapore Math to work out that we now have at least 2. So that is more than 1.

Credibility ….

School Board …

Reasons 86 To 90 Of The 1,001 Reasons I Really, Really HATE DirecTV.

#86. The ‘LIST’ (i.e., list of recorded programs) does NOT tell you how many programs you have recorded, just the amount of disk space left (in my case, right now 83%). I need to know the NUMBER of programs I have recorded — as I could with DISH. So with the DISH ‘list’ not only did you get a total number of items recorded, but each recorded program had a sequence number relative to the total. So, I would know, for example, that I had 176 programs recorded. That was critical intelligence for me. I knew that about 80% of that number would be movies. So I would know, right away, that I had just over a 3 months CACHE of recorded movies. That was always my goal. 3 months of movie on file. That way IF I cancelled or lost a movie channel (because the promo period ran out) I knew I could go for 3 months without having to worry about getting more new movies.

#87. The ‘GUIDE’ in addition to not telling you the proper channel name [e.g., ‘Bloomberg’, as I explained in #83], also has a cryptic ‘white’ tab against the Channel symbols, very like the ‘green’ tab that Excel puts on some cells to let you know that there is additional information associated with that cell. It is definitely because of this. When I see that ‘tab’ I want to know what it says behind it. But, I have yet to work out how I can click on that ‘tab’. Very frustrating. But, that is the watchword when it comes to DirecTV: ‘frustrating‘.

#88. I first reported this in #71, but yesterday, i.e., Monday, I just could not, and I mean COULD NOT, get the remote for the Genie Mini to accept 202 or 355. I am not kidding. Just would not take in those damn numbers. I would start punching in ‘2 …’ and it would immediately go to Channel 2! I would wait and I would start again. Now it would go to Channel 25 … that being the nearest to ’20’. After 4 f*ing attempts I had to haul myself out of bed, go upto the f*ing Genie Mini, put the damn controller right up against it and punch in 202. That worked. Then I was OK since I could use PREV. I hate DirecTV. Worst company in the World, hands down.

#89. Happened 5 times yesterday, on two separate occasions, with Channel 202 & 355 [i.e., CNN & CNBC]. When I selected the channel I got a BLACK screen. Nothing, but nothing on it. No sound. Just a BLACK screen. Had to hit PREV to go back and then start again. F*ing stupid. The Genie Mini is a piece of garbage.

#90. Also, yesterday morning with the bloody remote for the Genie f*ing Mini. Mute would only work, every other push. This is so pathetic. I have said it before, I will say it before. DirecTV’s business model appears to be that of giving their customers untested, inferior products and then holding them to a 2 year contract.
