I fully understand and sympathize with the sherpas. That goes without saying. It was a terrible thing to happen. Nobody is arguing or denying that.
BUT, to be fair, this was NOT anybodies fault. IF you believe in God, it was an act of God. Mother nature at work. An unfortunate hazard of a very hazardous trade. Being a sherpa was never an easy or safe job.
To hold the climbers, the businesses and economy hostage because of an accident caused by nature, and nature alone, is petulant and really beyond the dignity of these proud people.
That the Nepalese Government only offered some $450 compensation per death is insulting and stupid — BUT it is yet the latest in a chain of graphic examples that Asian folks (including me) are not the brightest bulbs in the world.
To blame the government for this is a bit of a stretch. Yes, the government should help out.
This boycott will do enormous damage to Nepal.
I agree that the Sherpas need to get a better deal. No question. But they should get that from the CLIMBERS and the TOUR COMPANIES that charge an arm-and-a-leg to get people to Everest. Yes, they in turn will pass it onto the climbers. So be it. But, get it off the climbers.
Don’t close down Mount Everest.
The mountain, Nepal, the Nepalese and the World deserves better than that.
