P1010913There was an Art Exposition of sorts at ACS last night. We went. Both kids had items on display — and as ever that was good to see.

However, what really impressed me was a table in the cafeteria with projects done by Richard Macduff’s grades 6, 7 & 8 ‘Tech Ed’ classes. I recognized two projects — the sail-car with the CD wheels and the windmill that can light a bulb — since Devanee had brought hers home over the last few days. But, I had never met Mr. Macduff prior to last night. I confess I didn’t even know he existed. But, I am glad I met him and had a chance to have a very productive conversation with him.

P1010911He, in my books, is a hero. He is so enthusiastic, committed and has the goods to show it. These creations that he gets the kids to build are sheer genii. Wow. The levitating train, using opposing magnets, was so cool. Yes, I have seen such stuff before, but this was built by an 8th grader.

I was really happy to see talent like that at ACS.

I asked him, point blank, given my push to get ACS teachers to coach Destination Imagination (DI), as to why he doesn’t coach DI because he would be excellent given his skills and passion. Appears that he did do some ‘Lego League’ coaching — BUT he is a 25-hours/week part-timer! If he gets too close to 30 hours/week ACS runs into the N.H. State statues about providing him with a pension. So he has to watch his hours — even when it comes to after school activities — because they carry a stipend. I was shocked. WOW.

This guy is good. He should be allowed to work as many hours as he can! To have his talents curtailed because of budget concerns seem crazy. I just read that the school received some unexpected largess in terms of grants. Well, if I had my way, I would use some of that money to give this guy some extra hours given the work he does.

But, he seems happy. The kids seem to like what they can do in his classes. So, a good situation.

We all know that this is CLASSIC John Paul II. His impish sense of humor.

Don’t worry about the 21 year old who was crushed. Immediate Martyr. He is already in heaven having a laugh with John Paul II.

I can even hazard a guess as to what John Paul II said: “You know … towards the end … I was INFIRM“.

Boom. Boom.

It is OK. Humor is good according to the pope.

Linksys Gives Me Full Refund … I e-Mailed John Chamber’s Office (at Cisco) & They Helped Though Linksys Is No Longer A Part Of Cisco.

Cisco Linksys RE1000 -- piece of junk getting sledgehammer treatment.

Linksys RE1000 gets the treatment it deserves. I pulverize it with a heavy sledgehammer. It proved to be a piece of junk.

Not sure how or why Linksys thought they were going to get away with LYING to me. It was never the $19.99 or in reality the $14.99. It was that they lied to me on a recorded line.

I told them a number of times that I didn’t want all $19.99 refunded. I was happy to pay them the $5, which is what I was told on the recorded line. But, I guess Linksys could not handle that.

Yes, I did e-mail John Chambers. Had a response within the day.

I was told, very gently, that Cisco no longer owned Linksys BUT that they would contact the Linksys management BECAUSE I had sent the complaint to John. That is class. John is a class act.

Now ALL is clear … like MUD.

No wonder Linksys is acting like it has. Linksys is NO LONGER Cisco.

 Linksys is NO LONGER Cisco.

I did not know that. Linksys was sold to Belkin in October of last year. Missed that, probably because I was so busy with Comet ISON.

So, as of now, no reason to buy Linksys. Got Linksys because it was Cisco owned.

Linksys without Cisco is just another 3rd rate router manufacturer that makes sub-par products.

All is clear.

Thank you John. Thank you Cisco. As always I am happy and proud to be a Cisco shareholder. Wish I still owned the shares I owned in 2002.

Have YOU Been Flossing YOUR Teeth ALL Your Life?

Went to see my latest dentist today — after having walked out of a Pittsfield dentist last month, in a huff, about not wanting my blood pressure taken.

The new dentist is a Sikh in Gilford (N.H.). [And to spare him any blushes, assuming he can blush, I will refrain from mentioning his name.]

He seems nice enough though I never got to see him per se though he came to examine my teeth! I am horizontally prone and he strides in, shakes my hand, while all the time covering his face with a sanitization mask. I guess he must be of a shy and retiring disposition. Strange. I kind of thought it was rude. I have never met the guy. So at least for the initial ‘meet-and-greet’ he could have lowered his mask. I guess they don’t teach these new dentists and doctors much about social etiquette.

But, he had a very nice. very pleasant and highly businesslike dental hygienist and 99% of my visit was with her. We kind of knew her, though this was the first time she has ever cleaned my teeth.

flossing1Anyhow, this masked Sikh, who has to be fairly young, asked me, quite seriously: ‘have you been flossing your teeth all your life?’.

I will admit that I thought, right off the bat, that it was a pretty dumb question. I am even willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and take for granted that ‘by all your life’ he didn’t mean when I was 1 year old or even had baby teeth.

But, I am 60. IF he bothered to look at my chart he would have known that — given that dentist are extremely good with numbers because they seem to spend so much time working out how much they are going to make off you.

So, what he was basically asking me was whether I had been flossing for say 50 years.

50 years.

That would take us to 1964.

440661I was still in Ceylon. I am not sure whether they even floss in Sri Lanka today. We were lucky to have toothbrushes. Often we used our fingers or soft branches from trees!

This guy looks like he was born in the 1980s. But I couldn’t tell. He looked like the Lone Ranger sans the horse.

I told him point blank that HECK NO, I had not been flossing all my life …. maybe for the last 20 years.

I immediately made a mental note that I will check the history of flossing when I got home.

I just did.

Yes, yes, yes. Doctors and dentists invented flossing ‘tools’ in the late 1880s. But they also invented vibrators for calming women’s nerved around that time too.

So let me categorically tell this masked Sikh … you may be a decent dentist (but I wouldn’t know since you didn’t have to do anything) … but you are rather naive and ill informed.

What a crazy thing to ask a 60 year old brown guy. “Have you been flossing ALL your life?”

I despair.

So how long have YOU been flossing?

Yes, I understand that Teischan, who is 8, could have answered that question in the affirmative. 52 year difference between her and her dad.
