The weather was slightly ‘iffy’. No thunderstorms, rain or even a wind of note. But, I kind of knew that the weather threatened. But we gave it a go. Went to our favorite Pittsfield fireworks watching spot. got there just before 5:30 pm. If any balloons took off we would see them across the pond. There were about five other families there, two photographers with all the equipment setup. I walked around, talked to all and collected whatever G-2 I could. Nobody was sure. One of the photographers was in Pittsfield for the first time. We hung around. The two helicopters were flying more or less non-stop. Pretty impressive. Very quick drop-offs and take-offs. Yes, a bit of a distraction. I think they were the only ones making any money Friday evening.
About 5:55 pm we could hear an announcement across the water. Though my hearing isn’t the best I picked up enough words. Just as I had feared. The weather was too threatening. So we got in the van and went to the fair. Yes, it was Friday evening. But there wasn’t much action. Yes, I know that Saturday is the BIG day. Teischan and I walked around.
Not a single balloon was deployed. That was disappointing and puzzling. They could definitely have had a few on tether. Hardly any wind. Would have been perfect for a tethered flight. As I mentioned in this post I use to crew for hot air balloons, in the U.K., in the early 1980s. The ‘pilots’ I worked with would have gone up in that weather. But, that was a different age and a different countries.
C’est la vie. It was hope against hope. Well it didn’t work out. But it wasn’t a total bust. We still got to walk around, talk to some nice people. Can’t make it Saturday. Might try Sunday.
