There are so, so many things wrong with this Referendum, morally, politically and logistically, BUT, indubitably, the most asinine aspect of it is that it will be decided by a SIMPLE majority — i.e., ONE VOTE either way will make the difference.
For something of this magnitude, with such far reaching consequences affecting millions, the majority should at least have been 60% — ideally a Supermajority of 66%.
It was way back in 1179 that it was decided that popes must be elected with a two-thirds majority [i.e., 66%] for the election to be valid. They knew even then that you needed at least 66% majority to have a credible MANDATE.
My fear is that we are now, 3 days ahead of the dreaded day, talking about “too close” to call. Basically 49-51.
One way or the other close to 50% of the electorate is going to feel they lost.
I know the Scots. In many ways I am one of them. I might have even been married to one, a bona fide article from Aberdeen — ‘common law’, albeit. They do have a bit of a ‘temper’ — with or without the ‘juice’.
It is NOT as if we, the Brits, are strangers to this stuff. We have had Ireland and I talk as one that lived through the ‘atrocities’ in England and London — even having been in Harrods, and parked on the same street, the day before!
I won’t even mention the partitioning of India and what a disaster it has been ever since — not to mention the cleaving off of Bangladesh.
Do I have to carry on. We have Ukraine as a very topical example and my earlier post that drew attention to that scenario was widely re-posted on the Web.
I am very happy and very proud that there has NOT been any violence in Scotland so far. That is, as we say, ‘brilliant’.
Past performance is no guarantee of future performance and we all know what the Scots can get up to.
This is so STUPID.
The simple majority was the stupid thing of the lot.
At least if a 60% majority had been called for, those that left would not feel as bad and cheated.
