On December 1, 2014, with luck, if last year was a precedent, WordPress.com will send me an e-mail telling me about ‘2014 in review‘. I will wait for that to explain what this is all about IF you haven’t already worked it out. I am pretty chuffed. Exactly a week earlier than I was expecting it based on recent run rates. I thought it would be my Christmas present.

Thank you all.

It has, as ever, been a load of fun and very rewarding on multiple fronts.

Happy Holidays.

Given The Unspeakable In Peshawar, Pakistan, Kenyan Cricket Team Should Leave.

I can’t remember what I was looking for, maybe it was an update on Hafeez, when I had seen on Google News that the Kenyan cricket team was visiting Pakistan. I was shocked. I have been watching a LOT of Pakistan cricket in the last 6 weeks, including the 2nd ODI against New Zealand just today, and I had not heard, on air, though I watch a LOT of ball-by-ball play, anything about this tour. Yes, it is NOT an international tour per se; Kenya is NOT a Test playing nation and furthermore the Pakistan International squad, in all of its exciting glory, is in the UAE.

I was going to write about this tour.

Then the next day I heard, on CNN, about Peshawar when I clicked over from CNBC, at 9 am sharp, to get the morning news.

Whether there was a connection with the Kenyan tour IMMEDIATELY crossed my mind!

Yes, most people, and certainly not anybody working for a U.S. news outlet, would know anything about it and as such be in a position to even mention it.

It just occurred to me that the Kenyan tour might have been seen as a PROVOCATION.

Essentially prior to this tour the only other cricket team that had visited Pakistan since 2009 was a team from neighbouring Afghanistan — and they are NOT really a cricketing nation.

So basically the ‘terrorist’ had managed to get a cricketing boycott of sorts. Then Kenya walks in. Might have been a red rag.

For those of you who don’t know or remember, in 2009 a bus carrying the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked, in Pakistan, by terrorist. None of the Sri Lankan players were killed but a number were injured. Six Pakistani policemen, the bus driver and one other were killed.

Click to access Wikipedia entry on the 2009 attack. A good place to start.

I could be wrong but I don’t have a good feeling about the Kenyan tour. Yes, the team will be very well guarded BUT their presence can cause unrest. Maybe Peshawar was but a coincidence BUT it is one heck of a one. This is exactly the reason that I, like others now, think the Pope’s visit to Sri Lanka in January 2015 is a bad idea. The pope will be fine. It is the collateral damage to others.

I like Pakistani cricket. The current Pakistani team is one of my favorite. So exciting to watch. Many of their players, in terms of temperament, as opposed to talent, remind me of me. Take Hafeez in the 2nd ODI, caught pulling, unnecessarily, at 75. Man, that was ME. I pulled and hooked indiscriminately and was out caught so, so, so many times. That is what I like about them. Like the West Indians they play with a passion, more heart than head. I want to see Pakistan cricket prosper. I want to see all cricket prosper. Such a wonderful sport. Hate it when other factors, especially terrorism, gets in its way — and we had some of that, i.e., tour boycotts, during the Sri Lanka civil war.
