My post on March 6, 2015, urging folks, all over, to stop wasting Web bandwidth — because it appears to be free — to my immense delight, appears to have struck a chord. Within hours it was shared on Facebook by 16 people. That is gratifying. It has been getting hits ever since.

Made me realize that people are actually INTERESTED in this. Thank YOU. So, despite my severe time crunch right now (with me trying to finish my latest book), I am going to start doing a series of posts on MAKING THE INTERNET GREEN.

This appears to have been the forgotten frontier when it comes to energy conservation. It is easy to overlook or forget the the Internet consumes HUGE quantities of energy. I have been giving it a lot of thought. The Internet, in terms of energy consumption, has to be getting up there — maybe even competing with the likes of commercial airlines! The Internet is ginormous. It, easily, has to be the largest entity ever created by humankind. That is why its energy consumption is so enormous. Each component, whether it be a router, server or computer per se doesn’t use that ‘much’ energy (in the overall scheme of things) — but it is the SHEER magnitude of components involved that adds up. We are talking tens of millions of routers and servers — even putting aside the computers.

I started looking around to see if I can find the energy that is required to transit 1MB of data over the Web. The above article and the video it references (shown below) answers that. One charcoal briquette worth of energy to transmit 1MB of data. My rant on March 6, 2015 was because some mindless idiot, albeit a (Sri Lankan) civil engineer, sent me a 9MB video file — when the video was already on YouTube. All he had to do was send me the YouTube link rather than a 9MB file. When I chastised him, as I am wont to do with anybody who wantonly wastes anything, he started arguing that sending the file did not cost anything! I was beyond livid.

Well now we have a figure. To send 9MB would have required 9 charcoal briquettes worth of energy. Thinking about burning 9 briquettes and the heat that that would produce. That heat is the energy. Not insignificant. But here is the kicker. This idiot, as is his wont, probably sent the same file to 20 other Sri Lankans — not counting me. So now we are talking 189 briquettes! That is one heck of a bonfire. And he was claiming that there was no energy being used. Well now we have a handle.

As I keep on saying I am NOT against using Internet bandwidth. I use plenty of it. My gripe is about WASTE. This Sri Lankan idiot also was confused about utility and waste. That is a shame. So PLEASE use as much Internet bandwidth as you need, JUST don’t waste it. Wasting Internet bandwidth is a waste of energy. So if you are into energy conservation PLEASE remember that Internet bandwidth is also energy.

1MB of data = 1 charcoal briquette.
