Just had an e-mail from Oswald Thomas Colman Gomis, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Colombo (Sri Lanka) — a longtime family friend. Thought I would share given my Catholic and Sri Lankan readership. The news hasn’t hit all the relevant Catholic Websites as yet. [I sent Gabriel, at, an e-mail.]

I did NOT know Bishop Elmo Perera. I see, thanks to Gabriel’s outstanding work, that we had 3 bishops all called Perera. Yes, a common name in Sri Lanka (a local variant of the Portuguese ‘Pereira‘ — for pear tree). I actually have cousins named ‘Perera’, and as is not unusual in Sri Lanka, they are Buddhists — i.e., names are not a reliable indicator of religion in Sri Lanka.

Theoretically, if not for the fact that I was adopted and do not know my biological family, Galle is my ‘home town’. I knew Galle well in my youth. Used walk on the ramparts. Now when I see them on TV, when cricket matches are being played in Galle, it makes me very nostalgic. Beautiful part of the world. After Galle there is nothing but Indian ocean all the way to Antarctica.
