There was never any doubt that the Green MGB would get driven as soon as the roads were dry and the weather hinted of Spring. Well, that day, up here in the Lakes region of New Hampshire was today, Sunday, April 19, 2015. It was a glorious day. Lots of sunshine, all the snow gone, no wind and the temp. getting up to around 60°F.

The 1968 MGB started without much drama. I had been trickle charging battery, off the car, all winter, in my heated workroom. Given that we bought the car in mid-September and didn’t have it ship-shape and inspected till early December this was the first time we got to drive the car when it was warm. What a difference. The last time we drove it was December 30, 2014. The temperature was 18°F though we drove it topless. So a 42°F difference in temperature. Also meant that the car was ‘only’ in hibernation for 110 days. Could have been better, but it could have been worse too.

We drove it for nearly 50 minutes. Went all the way to New Durham and back — with lots of detours. Didn’t see any other convertibles. The ‘Sea Foam’ and other fuel treatment I used over the winter does appear to have made a big difference. It drove well. Lots of power and plenty fast enough. Has the classic British sporting car exhaust sound. It was fun.

We, Devanee & I (and it is Devanee’s car), got back and Deanna pointed out that her crocuses were out. That is pretty amazing in that we had at least a foot of snow over them this time last year.

So, indubitably, Spring must have sprung. The crocuses are out, the peepers are peeping like there is no tomorrow and the Green MGB is out.

Happy Spring.

Dish or MetroCast After DirecTV — I Guess It Isn’t Even Close!

My detested and deplored DirecTV contract ends in June — two months from now.

June 22nd to be precise. As I avowed within a few days of getting it, I will cancel my DirecTV contract the VERY DAY that my 2-year commitment ends. To say that DirecTV irks me would be an understatement. DirecTV has got to be one of the scummiest companies in the U.S.

So what do I do next.

I, actually all of us, LOVE the Roku 3. The Roku really has changed our lives — watching “Downton Abbey“, nearly every day, not the only reason. Though I will give it some REAL serious consideration over the next few weeks, I am not convinced that I can live just with STREAMING. Streaming is good. Streaming is fun BUT I still like, or want, broadcast channels.

Plus, I, my nature and my IBM background, am into redundant solutions. Not sure I want everything media-wise coming into this house to be Internet-based — even IF I end up, down the road, with two separate Internet feeds, TDS & MetroCast, for redundancy.

I don’t think I need all the channels I now get with DirecTV. But I am not going to sacrifice BBC America, Travel or Animal Planet for $10/month. So most likely I will still end up with a 200+ channel package.

I will get a monthly discount on Dish through TDS. That is a given. I am amazed how expensive MetroCast is! Wow. Don’t even mention ‘Packages’! They are a ripoff! I get FREE VoIP with Google Voice. Why do I need to pay for a voice package. Have it already. Thank you.

I will keep you posted. This was but the opening salvo.

June is going to be busy. Lease on the KIA also comes to an end; June 27. At least we are all agreed on the replacement plan for that. One or more Jags!

As is becoming the norm with this maverik, unpredictable pope
there is always two-sides to most things he does.
That is appearing to be the case with his trip to the
U.S. in September 2015.

GOOD: Making peace with the U.S. nuns.
BAD: Further upsetting the Miami Cubans.

Click for ONE of my many, many posts on this subject on my “Popes and Papacy” blog. Search on ‘nuns’ once you are at the blog.

In what was a star-crossed papacy, one of the strangest things that octogenarian Benedict (#266) permitted was that of the Vatican trying to cross swords with the much respected and beloved U.S. nuns. Even without comparison to their child-abusing ‘brothers’, the U.S. nuns, by most any measure, were Saints. So the Vatican, and the pope, was on a hiding to nowhere. Popes and the Vatican, over the centuries have tried to fight many losing causes — and this still has to be up there as one of the stupidest.

Francis can be street smart, when he puts his mind to it, and making peace with the U.S. nuns AHEAD of his trip to the U.S. was indeed a clever move. The last thing he needed while in the U.S. was having the nuns ‘mad’ at him. Plus, he will be relying on the nuns to take care of him while he is here. That is how it works. So this is all very smooth stuff.

Not so, the plan to extend the U.S. trip to include Cuba. Despite all of the immense progress made re. Cuba in the last couple of months, I do NOT think the Miami Cubans are going to be happy with that move. Lets wait and see. This is just a heads up.

When I turned on my Roku 3 around 2pm on Saturday, April 18, 2015, to watch some cricket while I ate my late brunch I noticed, at once, that something was different. Rather than the rather peaceful, light blue, “Under Sea” theme — that I had paid all of $0.99 to get — I now had a “Star Wars” theme.

The Roku had automatically installed and activated it. I went into my ‘Themes’ setting and had a look. “Star Wars” had been added. My other themes, including the one I paid for was still there. I was cool. I don’t mind “Star Wars”. My son, now 23, was a HUGE fan. I saw most of the movies, with him, multiple times, and I have to confess, sheepishly if need be, that I have no clue what they were all about. Very clever and vaguely entertaining BUT I was never able to work out what it was all about.

Not sure if this is but a temporary promotion to plug their new “Star Wars” programming. Maybe the theme will automatically disappear in much the same way that it appeared. Just wanted to share with you.

‘Lily Pond’ Was Ice Free April 16, 2015, So Lake Winnipesaukee Ice-Out Expected 7 – 10 Days After That.

Per the local folk lore ice-out on the BIG Lake, Lake Winnipesaukee, usually takes place 7 to 10 days after ice-out on miniscule ‘Lily Pond’, in Gilford, on the perimeter of the Laconia Airport. With Lily Pond clear as of April 16 the current belief is that we should see the Big Lake ‘ice free’ around April 24 – 27. My druthers is that it will be towards the latter part of this range, i.e., April 26, April 27. Maybe even as far as May 1 or May 2.

Yes, a couple of days of wind will expedite matters.

April 26 will be quite late. Ice out on, or after, April 26 has only happened 26 times out of 128. 20% of the time.

April 19, today, is THE average.

May 12 is the longest — on record.

I have seen, in 2001, a May 2 ice-out.
