Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey, the master marketers they are, making use of (‘exploiting’ would be too strong a term) Tuesday’s ‘Elephant Appreciation Day’ to remind us that the circus, with elephants, will be back in town, in Manchester, NH, as usual, for the October circus. There are, I am sure, also trying to make sure that we all appreciate that there will STILL indeed be elephants at this show. Yes, they plan to phase out elephants from their shows but that will NOT be in 2015 or even 2016. But the message is clear — the days of seeing elephants in U.S. circuses are numbered. As I have said before I have mixed feelings about this. While lions and tigers — and rabbits — performing in circuses bother me, greatly, I don’t have a major gripe with elephant, horse or dog acts. Basically I know that these animals will perform to please — while I am not sure about that with lions and tigers. But then there is the whole issue with the training and overall treatment. So in a way it is good that we will soon not be seeing elephants.

Just because the elephants will be in Manchester, PLEASE do not expect to see the elephant parade of old. That is history. Too dangerous with all the protestors. So as has been the case in the last few years the elephants, like the tigers and lions, will be trucked from/to the train and they will even do that during the second half of the performance.

Yes, we will go to the circus as we have for the last 7 or 8 years. I will do another post on the circus … promise.
