In the early 1980s when I was doing seminars about computer technology I used to talk about how the printed paper documentation related to building and maintaining a Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet weighed more than an actual 747 — and how it would be impossible to create and maintain such a volume of documentation without computer networks.
Now this example was impressive given that the 747 wasn’t exactly small.
Yes, of course, such a comparison isn’t that dramatic — or fair — when one is dealing with smaller, lighter products.
But it struck me the other night that it is awfully incongruous that the printed ‘User Guide’ for my new camera, the Sony RX100 M2 (II), is conspicuously bigger and heavier than the camera. And I am not even including the smaller, pretty basic, multilingual ‘Instruction Manual’ that is included in the box. And this is the case with all new cameras.
Modern digital cameras are getting increasingly complex. But this is getting beyond the pale. And to be honest even this hefty, 260 page Guide doesn’t cover it all IF you want to be real pedantic. You will have to get a $25 – $35 BOOK (and I have done that too).
Just something to think about.
