When I saw this I couldn’t resist SHARING this with you.

Pope’s obviously trip.

Happened to Pope Pius XII (the WW II pope) too right after his election as they were leaving the Sistine Chapel.

French Cardinal Jean Verdier, upon seeing this, PUNNED in Latin “Vicarius Christi in terra!”

The pun being that this could mean either “the Vicar of Christ on Earth” (one of the pope’s title) or the Vicar of Christ is on the ground.

Papal trivia that I carry in my head.

U.S. Red Poppy Promotions from prior years.

So why isn’t the Red Poppy MORE popular — let alone ubiquitous as it is in other countries at the start of November — in the U.S.?

I have a theory.

The U.S. did NOT enter World War I until April 6, 1917.

WW I started July 28, 1914.

The Second Battle of Ypres, which is what the poem ‘In Flanders Field’ by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, which gave rise to the ‘Red Poppy’ tradition was fought from 22 April – 25 May 1915.

In other words the BASIS for the tradition predates the U.S. involvement though ‘Poppy Day’ itself did not come to be until 1921. Please check ‘Red Poppy’ page, above, for the full illustrated history.

Well that is my theory. I could be wrong.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Says Red Poppy, In U.S., Should Be Worn On Memorial Day, Not Veterans, i.e., 11/11.

This, to be fair, makes sense.

Our Poppy Day/Remembrance Day is to honor and remember the war dead — though by extension we use it also to honor and commemorate all past wars. The U.S. makes a distinction between its two holidays: Memorial Day (in May) & Veterans Day, 11/11. That is made clear in the first Q&A.

My problem. Enough Americans don’t wear Red Poppies either for Memorial Day or Veterans Day.

Pope Francis does NOT sing on this CD (or ‘album’).

Instead it is his words, sometimes in heavily accented English and other times in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, from homilies he has delivered, set to very catchy, high-energy, electronic music by composers Dino Doni and Toni Pagliuca — and complemented with hymns and Latin chants. Got that.

Basically Pope Francis’ words set to music.

You can hear the ‘Wake Up! Wake Up!’ in English at the 2:46 minute mark, as shown below.
