Ceylon/Sri Lanka Independence Day — Events Leading Up To 1948 Handover Of Power.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access YouTube video.

February 4, 2016 will be the 68th anniversary of Ceylon/Sri Lanka Independence — the great day having occurred in 1948.

If we are lucky Google will do a Doodle, for Sri Lanka Independence Day (which Google called ‘National Day‘), as they did in 2015 & 2013 (and MY request).

Around this time I start combing the Web looking for historic new stories or movie clips related to Independence. This is my first contribution this year.

TDS Telecom, As I Knew They Would, Has Pushed Back 1 Gigabit Availability.

by Anura Guruge

I was first told that I could be one of the first to try it out, in the area, in October 2015. That was told to me in January 2015. TDS did not want me switching to MetroCast 75Mbps. I didn’t believe TDS and dig go and get 75Mbps from MetroCast.

Then I was told I would definitely have it in Spring of 2016. In December 2015, when I was in a protracted ‘battle’ with them about reduced bandwidth (since I still kept one TDS drop as a backup), I was told Gigabit, coming in the next ‘few months’, would solve all my problems. Well pigs would fly.

I just happened to check. They are now saying AUGUST 2016. That is neither Spring 2016 or really a ‘few months’ from December (though I appreciate that there are no defined limits as to how far ‘few months’ extends).

I no longer trust TDS. They have abused me for way too long. I probably will NOT sign up for 1 Gig though I realize that I might be spiting myself. I am going to continue with MetroCast 105 Mbps till at least year end to see how others fair with TDS. I know this for a fact; 15% of THIS neighbourhood will NOT signup for 1 Gig. That is a given.

Latest TDS 1 Gig in Alton availability map — with different areas ‘pinned’ as A, B, C etc. I am ‘G’. Click to ENLARGE. Use this link to access original: http://www.tdsfiber.com/where/Alton/

Click to ENLARGE. My neighborhood. Yep, pigs will fly.

I have invented a new game to while away few minutes of my near daily run. I try to come up with new phrases to fit the TDS acronym. Example: Too Damn Slow.

My latest.

TDS = Totally Despicable Scoundrels.

You can join too. It is fun and therapeutic.

A Wedding Haka From New Zealand To Add To The Airport Haka.

by Anura Guruge

wedding haka

Click to access must watch YouTube video of wedding hakka posted Friday, January 22, 2016.

We at this household are addicted to hakas especially those done by New Zealanders. Our YouTube channel on the Roku 3 has ‘Haka’ high up in the search list. I saw this in the U.K. “Daily Mail” — which I read, on my Android tablet, first thing in the morning, with coffee, before getting out of bed. I knew I had to share it with YOU. I guess hakas are going to get commonplace in New Zealand if this goes on. The airport haka to welcome the Rugby World Cup winners was great. This wedding haka is as good. Enjoy.

Hoped For ‘Planet X’, The Ninth Planet, CAN NOT Be Named After David Bowie. Period.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access original.

Contrary to what many realize the officially recognized names of celestial bodies are carefully governed and assigned per some very strict guidelines maintained by the ‘International Astronomical Union’ (IAU) — an organization recognized by 74 world powers.

To have the supposed ninth planet (or any other planet in our Solar System) named after David Bowie he would have to be deemed a god.

Yes, there are those that will avow that David Bowie is a god. But, alas, that alone is not enough.

To be considered for planetary naming honors the god ALSO has to be a well established very long term player, such as Venus, Mercury, Jupiter or Saturn, and it has to be a MYTHICAL god. David Bowie is not mythical. So he is ruled out forever, forever.

The current convention is that Dwarf Planets are also named after mythical gods/goddesses THOUGH they don’t have to be, for obvious reasons, as towering as those assigned to the planets.

Comets, if named, are named after the discoverers or the ‘team’ that discovered them. David Bowie did not discover any comets.

Giving stars official names is now in decline and as with planets/dwarfs any and all OFFICIAL names assigned have to be mythical characters.

So the only option for having a (non-satellite) celestial body named after Bowie is to name an asteroid after him — and that has already been done! 342843 Davidbowie.

The Asteroid Named After David Bowie, 342843 Davidbowie.

Click to ENLARGE and enjoy. From ‘JPL Small-Body Database Browser’ (at ssd.jpl.nasa.gov).

It is a Main-Belt Asteroid and as such is always outside the orbit of Mars.

The 342843 is a sequence number, in that it is the 342,843rd confirmed ‘Minor Planet’ to have been discovered, Ceres (now a Dwarf Planet) having the honor of being the 1st, i.e., 1 Ceres. Pluto now that it is a dwarf is numbered 134340.

The name is optional and is initially put forward by the discoverer of the asteroid.

As of today 701,660 ‘Minor Planets’ have been catalogued as having been discovered. 19,712 of them, just a mere 2%, are named. Here is the list. So to have an asteroid named after you is, of course, special, BUT not that exclusive.

The ‘Beatles’ collectively and individually have asteroids named after them, viz. 8749 Beatles, 4147 Lennon, 4148 McCartney, 4149 Harrison & 4150 Starr. Some of the others include Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Mike Oldfield, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Bee Gees, Buddy Holly etc. etc. Here is a list.

So David, as is due, has been honored as a ‘spaceman’.
