Hammacher Schlemmer ‘Tibetan Singing Bowl’ For $200.

by Anura Guruge

Got this today in my inbox per the frequent e-mails I get from Hammacher Schlemmer — though I am NOT a customer.

I do remember having encountered these very compelling bowls during my time in Thailand, many decades ago. Wow, $200.

On a whim and a hunch I checked it out on eBay. Wow. Wow. Wow.

That is one heck of a difference in price. I had mentioned this before, i.e., that I have seen HS products cheaper on Amazon. But this QUITE the difference. Maybe I will get one on eBay. Not that I have room left in the house!

Olympus OM-D E-M10 With M-Zuiko 14-42 mm Lens For $500 Is Beyond Tempting.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access Olympus product page for this OM-D E-M10 with 14-42 Lens.

As I have mentioned before I do subscribe to the Olympus newsletter and Deanna currently does own a point-and-shoot Olympus, the Olympus Stylus SZ-16.

And e-mail, again offering the very capable OM-D E-M10 with 14-42 Lens at $499.99 arrived in my inbox the very day I sold my Sony RX100 II — and as such was in the market for a compact camera to augment my main Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 (until I move up to a Fuji X-T1 (or T2 if there is going to be one). This is very tempting.

I only have two concerns right now: 1) Is it too big, especially the lens (despite being a ‘pancake’) sticking out? and 2) Can I live with a 42mm max. zoom when I used to get infuriated with the 100mm zoom on the Sony. Decisions, decisions. But I love it.

Earthquake In Taiwan, Just Ahead Of The Chinese New Year, On Monday, Will Rattle Superstitious Asians.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access CNN coverage. Google for more.

The Chinese New Year for 2016, ‘Year of the Red Monkey‘, falls on Monday, February 8, 2016.

That an earthquake happened in Taiwan, a couple of days ahead of it, will be viewed by superstitious Asians as some kind of omen — bad luck.

I know. I am Asian too. So just a heads up.

“Enter The Haggis”, Once An Exciting Celtic Rock Band, At The “Flying Monkey”, Plymouth, NH, March 18, 2016.

Click to access YouTube video.

A YouTube video, from 2008, clearly showing what they used to sound like
— a bona fide Celtic Rock Band.

flyingmokeylogoWe saw them, maybe 9 to 10 years ago at an New Hampshire ‘Highland Games‘ — one of the three that were not held in Loon. I think we actually went to those games (under protest because we did NOT like the move away from Loon) specifically to see “Enter the Haggis” and our perennial favorites “The Brigadoons“. “Enter the Haggis” did NOT disappoint. They rocked despite having to perform in a dingy, straw strewn barn. We loved them. We wanted to see them again. BUT they never played at the ‘Highland Games‘ again.

Today, I just happened to see in a Concord paper that they were playing at (Alex Ray’s (as in the “Common Man“)) “Flying Monkey” in Plymouth, New Hampshire on Friday, March 18, 2016. Just wanted to share that with YOU. I watched their latest videos on their Website. They have changed, evolved. The Celtic sound, in my opinion, has been compromised BUT I could be wrong. Anywho. They were once big and exciting. IF we have the time (and with the way the stock market is tanking the money) we might go to see them. But, you can go without us. SMILE.

I Bought A 10.6″ 8-Core Dragon Touch X10 Android Tablet To Replace My Le Pan.

by Anura Guruge

My Le Pan 10.2″ Android tablet, that I got from Walmart in August 2014 (to replace my 7″ ASUS that died), after acting up now and then, in terms of not powering up, finally gave up the ghost and died, dead as a doornail, Friday night. Friday was quite the day, even without the stock market meltdown. I won’t even tell you how much I lost. Some people have mortgages that are less than that. C’est la vie.

Yes, the Le Pan is covered by a USELESS 2 year product warranty I got from bloody Walmart — for $45. Never again. This is why I bought this from Amazon, the 2nd of the 12 (or more) Android pads that I have bought for the kids, Deanna and I.

I came across the Dragon Touch X10 when I asked Amazon to show me 10″ (or greater) Androids. I have had good luck — or I should say Teischan has had good luck — with ‘cheap’ Chinese Android Pads, i.e., Visual Land. The reviews for this, including one on YouTube, were pretty awesome. I liked the specs. The 10.6″ appealed. I do NOT carry this around. 95% of the time it is on my bedside table. I mainly use a tablet, in the morning, in bed, while I drink my coffee, and listen to CNBC. I check my blog, I read ‘marketwatch.com‘, I read the U.K. “Daily Mail“, cover-to-cover, without fail, and I check camera news. All using Chrome. I don’t use many APPS! So this looks good. Price was acceptable, though it appears the price has gone up in the last 6 months! I paid quite a bit more for the Le Pan 18 months ago.

I will, of course, let you know how it works out after I get it on Wednesday, February 10, 2016.
