South Africa In Shocking Pink, In the 4th ODI Against England, Deliver The Thrills …

by Anura Guruge

sainpinkSouth Africa, these days, is the team that I most enjoy watching — particularly so when they are in their shocking pink (to support the fight against breast cancer). They look good. I actually think that every series, around the World, should have a Pink Match — for the same cause.

I knew that the highlights of the Pink 4th ODI would be on tonight. I was looking forward to it all day. Though I also had the option of watching the 2nd T20I between India vs. Sri Lanka, it was a no-brainer. It was a thrilling match. Some great cricket. I really wasn’t sure that SA was going to win. It was close. Morris played a brilliant innings. I was crushed when Amla was out without scoring. I love watching him bat — and of Quinton de Kock. I rated him from the time I saw him against the West Indies.

So two dramatic games in two nights. I am blessed. 5th ODI on Sunday. Enjoy.

Samsung Confirms That Smart Devices Will Spy On You — Big Brother Watching YOU!

This is exactly what I was referring to when I said, on Monday of this week, that I had MAJOR privacy concerns when it came to the Amazon ECHO that was advertised during the Super Bowl.

As somebody who has been actively involved in computers for 47 years (yes, since 1969) I have a good grasp of what the technology can do and what vendors are likely to do with that technology.

That smart devices go out of their way to collect data on us is not knew. I first subscribed to satellite TV 24 years ago. Of course that meant I had to have a settop box that had a phone connection — supposedly so that I could PPTV. But the guy who installed the system told me, kindly, that the main reason for having the phone connection was so that all of the channels that I had surfed through could be uploaded, at 2 am in the morning, on a regular basis — on the pretext that diagnostics were being performed on the box and that new software was being downloaded. That was 1992.

Obviously any smart device that offers voice commands MUST listen to everything going on so that in can pickup its name. This was my concern with Amazon’s ECHO. Having an Internet-connected device, with a sensitive mike, in the middle of our living area listening to everything that was going on. What a boon for Amazon.

Yes, as is the case with Samsung, in theory, they need to cover this in their published privacy policy. But that is just in theory.

So be warned. Be aware. Be very afraid. Big brother is watching you and listening to you. Any internet connected device with a camera and mike can spy on you without you realizing it. SMILE.

Very frustrating. I know by 10am IF WordPress is having issues — and now they, i.e., WP, knows that I know when they are having issues. SMILE. No consolation. Just a heads up.

Popes In Sombreros — Argentinian Pope Francis Far From First To Sport A Sombrero.

It has become a rite of passage — popes visiting Latin America, in particular Mexico or Cuba, don a sombrero at some point during the trip, usually on the plane on the flight out. But there has also been occasions when a pope is presented with a sombrero, by visiting Latin Americans, at the Vatican.

The first pope to wear one appears to have been Paul VI. He only made one trip to Latin America, and that was to Colombia, in August 1968 to attend the 39th International Eucharistic Congress in Bogotá.

Pope Francis Is In Cuba Again, Today — 2nd Visit In 5 Months.

This visit, or to be more precise ~2 hour stopover enroute to Mexico, has not received much publicity in the U.S.

The purpose of this visit is for an HISTORIC meeting with the head of the Russian Orthodox Church — on neutral ground.

The claim is that the two will sign a joint declaration condemning violence against Christians in the Middle East — now with Russia such a key player in Syria and Iran.

Though not stated they may also discuss the possibility of standardizing when Easter Sunday will be celebrated across the two Churches.

Agreeing on matters further could be prickly since a major stumbling block between what the two Churches believe in is the role of the pope! The Orthodox Church does not believe that the Pope has the right to be the head of Christians on Earth — that being the role of Christ. And then there is the Filioque (‘from the son’) addition in the Nicene creed (and that is BIGGIE).

As far as we have been told Pope Francis will not leave the Airport. There is also no mention whether any of the Castros will be at the airport to greet him.

John Paul II, in 1984, set the precedent for such ‘Airport Only’ stopover meetings when he met with Ronald Reagan at the Fairbanks Airport in Alaska. The two had also met at the airport in Anchorage Alaska 3 years earlier BUT in that instance the pope did visit the City to celebrate a Mass.

India vs. Sri Lanka 1st T20I, at Pune, Feb. 12, 2016 — Atypically Dramatic; Unexpected Win For SL.

by Anura Guruge

This as T20Is go was quite the barn burner in that it had mega-drama. 22-year old debutant, with the very impressive name of Chandrasekara Arachchilage Kasun Rajitha, gets a wicket with his 2nd ball and then his 4th — Sharma and Rahane (both poor shots). You wouldn’t dare write such stuff it you were writing a novel. India, reigning T20I champions, 7 for 58 in the 11th over. WOW. It was dramatic stuff. Ashwin, always an impressive figure, played one heck of an innings. Some atrocious fielding by Sri Lanka and, of course, poor batting by India.

Then it looked like Sri Lanka might CHOKE though I had hopes given that they do have the likes of Chandimal, who I do rate as a talented cricketer. In the end they pulled it off comfortably. Had to have been quite the shock for India — especially since this was a new, inexperienced SL squad. The 2nd T20I most likely will see a more resolute Indian side.

Lots of cricket. Can’t wait to see the South Africa vs England 4th ODI — in Pink — on Friday.
