A Lego Set (Taj Mahal) For $11,500 — Good Thing It Comes With Free Shipping.

by Anura Guruge

This morning I was looking at Lego sets “for 14 and over“, since I need one as a present, when Amazon recommended this! Good job I was lying in bed and had just put aside my cup of coffee.

Wow. I know I still have, unmade, a Lego kit that is now selling for over $500. But when Deanna got it for me, 3 years or so ago, it was close to half that. I know that Legos are getting expensive. But this is crazy even if it has 5,922 pieces. Yes, it is available for less, ~$4,200. At that price it might be worth it THOUGH that is still way too ‘rich’ for my taste and budget. Just thought you might be interested.

Missing EgyptAir Flight 804 — Wouldn’t Israel Have State-of-the-Art Radar/Satellite Imagery?

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Map from Wikipedia annotated by ME to highlight where Israel is and where there Western radar would be pointed.

The second thing that struck me this morning when I heard about the missing EgyptAir Flight 804, after wondering why it wasn’t even 1/2 full, was that Israel has to have real-time, state-of-the-art satellite and radar imagery of all that happened. It was basically on their doorstep — on their Western flank.

Having been to Israel, having done tons of work for Israeli companies, having Israeli friends and knowing a bit about their military might I know that Israel will not be blindsided by anything in the air within hundreds of miles of it. So shouldn’t they be forthcoming with all the data they have?

This is unlike Malaysian Air MH370. This is the Eastern Mediterranean. Cradle of civilisation. Plus not that far from Cyprus. As far as I know us the British still has a military and air force presence on the island. In which case, given that that we were among the pioneers of radar, we must have some good radar capability around there. Just wondering, as I always do.

Missing EgyptAir Flight 804 — Why Was It Only At 35% Passenger Capacity?

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Thought to be an image of the actual missing Airbus A320 plane. From Wikipedia.

Having ‘just’ been on a number of Airbus A32x on our recent trip to California the first thing that struck me, early this morning, when I heard about the missing EgyptAir Flight 804 was WHY was it so empty. I knew that an Airbus A320 can hold at least 150 passengers. Appears that depending on configuration it can hold from 150 to 179 passengers. [The plane is an Airbus A320-232.]

But this flight, from Paris no less, only had 56 passengers. Yes, I know that tourism and travel to Egypt is way down. But is it THAT bad or was there something else.

Strange that nobody else commented on this this morning. I was very struck by its emptiness. I just expected a flight from Europe to Cairo to be reasonably packed. [Most U.S. flights are full these days.]
