“All The Way”: Movie About LBJ’s First Year As President — Powerful, Enthralling & educational.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the “IMDb.com” listing for this great movie.

This great movie, the featured movie from a couple Saturday’s ago, is still showing on HBO. Definitely worth watching.

Given that in 1964, I was 10 years old and living in Ceylon, Lyndon B. Johnson was a tad ‘before my time‘. Yes, over the years I have learnt that he was a forceful president and that he was the President that finally made ‘Civil Rights‘ a reality in the U.S. I had also heard stories about his above average endowment, public bathroom habits (touched upon in the movie), womanizing (also mentioned in the movie), brashness, effectiveness, disillusionment with Vietnam etc. But this movie taught me a lot. It was one heck of a movie.

Two thumbs (and more) up for it. Very good. Really enjoyed it.

Laconia (N.H.) Take Note, “Free The Female Nipple” Folks Sue Fort Collins, Colorado For Local Ordinance.

by Anura Guruge

We already know that the Laconia ordinance really has no foot to stand on. Somebody should sue them to get this stupid ordinance off the books.

Scottish Tattoo At ‘Fort Knox’, Bucksport, Maine — July 9, 2016.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here. You can find an URL at the bottom. Check that if you want BUT this snippet really has all you need to know.

YouTube video from the 2010 Fort Knox tattoo.

‘Fort Knox’, in Bucksport, Maine, on the banks of the Penobscot River, is a compact, impressive and scenic spot. We visited in September of 2014, on the way back from Acadia National Park, and loved it.

That they are holding a tattoo at a Fort rather than a ‘festival’ or ‘games’ is cute. Of course it will not be the Edinburgh Castle Tattoo, which can never be paralleled, but it should be evocative enough if the weather cooperates. So an early heads up. I will even keep you posted on the weather.

Remember June 4, 2016 ‘Scottish Festival‘ at ‘Old Orchard Beach‘. Maine is giving New Hampshire a run for its money when it comes to Scottish musical entertainment.

Some pictures of ‘Fort Knox‘ I took in September 2014 with my then Canon Rebel T3i
(which Devanee uses now).

Do Not Buy Expensive Digital Cameras From Anybody Other Than Amazon!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read these two posts from the “DPReview” Forums.

The above 2 Forum posts were against a thread I started, prior to buying my Fuji X-E2s, as to whether new Fuji cameras, sold in the U.S., come inside factory sealed plastic bags.

They are supposed to, per Fuji U.S.A, and my Fuji X-E2s, that I bought from Amazon, did indeed come inside a sealed bag

The above posts CONFIRMED a fear that I had long held. That some online U.S. camera dealers resell RETURNED units!

Yes, I have seen posts online suggesting that you could have this same problem with Amazon.

I, however, believe that Amazon given its scale is the one LEAST LIKELY to do so — and it is so easy, with Amazon, to return an item.

I have talked to Amazon about this. They assure me that they NEVER restock returned cameras. Instead all return cameras are sold as WAREHOUSE SPECIALS — and they sure have a big section of such specials.

I had bought quite a few cameras from ‘BuyDig.com‘, Panasonic, Sony & Canon, and none of them came sealed. When asked they said that they open and check all cameras prior to shipping. I am now skeptical.

Well I have decided, categorically, that I will, in future. buy ALL my cameras from Amazon. Period. Just sharing with you in case it helps. SMILE.

Full Disclosure: I do own Amazon shares and have done so for some time.

Our DIY Dog Gate.

by Anura Guruge

Ever since we got Braxton in September 2013 we have AGAIN needed dog gates, either side of the kitchen/dining area, to keep him from getting into things that he shouldn’t have. We had a few spare gates from when Teischan was a baby and we recycled those as much as possible. But the last one finally broke and we were without a gate for a week or so. Didn’t need anything elaborate. Braxton, himself, can’t get over or through much. Maya, though big, is very docile and would not try to jump over a gate. So we could have a gate that was fairly low and just step over it. So I decided to just go ahead and build one using material we had lying around.

Deanna made the middle using screen door mesh that we had and some leftover material. I cut two pieces of wood that I had lying around to size. Used felt surface protectors to get the tension I needed. Then I happened to be at the hardware store and bought a rubber tip for canes (at $1.84 for two). Used one to get even more tension. Had it up for two days. hasn’t fallen yet and nobody has tripped over it. Dogs have not bothered to even test it. They get the message. So I am pretty happy. You too could build one just like this. Very basic and simple.

New History Channel ‘Roots’ (2016) Miniseries Is Not A Patch On The 1977 Original.

by Anura Guruge

The NEW 2016 History Channel ‘Roots’.

The OLD 1977 ‘Roots’.

Wow. Wow. Wow. The new 2016 miniseries is NOTHING like the 1977 original. As different as chalk and cheese.

When I had seen the commercials for ‘Roots‘ on the History Channel I had no idea that it was to be a new miniseries. I just assumed that they were going to reshow the old one — possibly remastered. I had seen the original in 1977, in Britain, and had become hooked. I also watched the 1979The Next Generation‘. Though I was somewhat au fait with the controversies that surrounded Alex Haley’s book, I still thought it told a good story. I wanted the kids to see it. Hence why I recorded the new one.

Right from the start it did not look right. I kept on thinking I can’t remember it being like this. Then Deanna worked out that it could not have been the original.

The original was not as ‘edgy’ as the new one. The new one, visually and dramatically, is too harsh. In an effort to be clever and cute they have overshot. There is nothing appealing about it. Just too brash. I am also convinced that it is anachronistic. What is portrayed as bustling West African city in ‘1750’ just does NOT look right. Looks too European. Ditto for the costumes.

Great shame. Nothing wrong with the original. The History Channel just wasted a lot of money. They would have been better off just showing the original. I guess I will just have to buy the original, on DVD, from Amazon.
