Yesterday’s ‘Think’:“The modern fork'” — the modern 4-pronged table fork is the baby-of-the-family when it comes to ‘European’ (or for that matter Asian (as in say Chinese)) table utensils. Knives and spoons were in wide use for centuries prior to the appearance of the table fork. Large two-pronged forks had been around for a long time — going back to the ancient Egyptians. But these large forks were used when cooking or for bailing hay. The three-pronged trident was associated with the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon. As such Europeans eschewed three-prong forks, associating them with mini-tridents. The modern fork probably gained currency in France somewhere in the late 18th century.
