Have you ever given that any thought? English, especially with the Web, definitely feels like the lingua franca of the day. [By the way, what does lingua franca mean?] So is English the predominant language in the World. It is worth thinking about.
Think first, then research, then THINK again. Think for the pleasure of thinking.
Yesterday’s ‘Think’: “24 hours in a day” — the ancient Egyptians came up with this. We know that because we have been able to find sundials testifying to this. They split the day into 10 DAYLIGHT hours. Then added a TWILIGHT hour at each end to get 12. Then 12 hours of darkness. The 12 hours was because the Egyptians didn’t count (to 10) using the fingers of their hands! Instead they counted using the JOINTS in the four, non-thumb fingers of a hand. Each non-thumb finger has 3 joints. Have a look. 4 fingers, each with 3 joints = 12. Easier to count. You can count using the forefinger (index finger) of one hand … Plus 12 has more divisors than 10. In other words 12 can be divided by (1), 2, 3, 4 & 6. That helps when trying to divvy up things. Ten, on the other hand, is only divisible by (1), 2 & 5. Not as handy.
