I have always maintained that the Pope as ‘Vicar of Christ’
has moral responsibilities.

Click to access this post. Read my 3rd sentence.

This is HUGE!

The implications are staggering.

And in the midst of the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic?

Timing is extremely strange & suspect.

Basically the pope is saying: ‘I do NOT represent Christ/God on Earth. Do not hold me responsible. I am just the Bishop of Rome‘.

Cardinal Gerhard Müller points out that in the new presentations of the titles of the Pope, there are mixed together titles with dogmatic significance with those that do not bear such weight and who have a historical background (such as “Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City”).

German Cardinal Gerhard Müller supposedly called this an “embarrassment” & “a theological barbarism“. Wow.

Make up your own mind.

This is HUGE. Trust me on that.

The Timing? The Timing?

This is crazy.

I have said that he is the Donald Trump of Popes. SMILE.

But, maybe Donald Trump will try to buy this title from the Pope. It has to be worth Trillions.

Well, on the surface here, it seems like Francis is behaving as if he is humbly sloughing away some bit of anachronism, like his predecessors giving up the coronation ceremony or the sedia gestatoria.

Yet in this instance, apparently “giving up” the title Vicar of Christ cuts into the the role and reason for the papacy: as a focus of continuity and role as the Chief Teacher and leader of the Flock of Christ. As is typical for Francis, this “innovation” comes without a stated reason or goal. Speculation: he’s playing nice nice with the Orthodox Christians here by making the office “first among equals” (like the Patriarch of Constantinople) of the other Patriarchs? Maybe he wants to self-fulfill the (spurious) Prophecy of St. Malachy and be the last Pope in the line? I dunno. But this strikes me as being on very shaky ground.
I wonder who in Curia put him up to it. :-/

You and I, so often, think along the same lines. That ‘first among equals’ crossed my mind. Also now … what about ‘Petrine succession’. Interesting times. Interesting times. I, alas, am NOT up on curial politics. I wish I was. All I can say is that this changes NEARLY everything!

Mark, I also thought of ‘Peter the Roman’. SCARY how you and I, from such different backgrounds and perspectives, think alike when it comes to Popes!

That is funny! At the risk of sounding like a conspiratorial nut-job, I can’t help but wonder if Francis’ perpetual zest for muddying theological waters isn’t merely his “style”, but rather a deliberate Agenda of some group within the Curia, which doesn’t necessarily have to include Francis himself (plausible deniability?) but who definitely “have his ear” on matters like this. I actually don’t see Francis as the “liberal” the media wants him to be. But he seems to be in the thrall of those who are, or at least those who have their own agenda. This last issue being but one of many examples.

      Mark,
I have said he is the Trump of Popes. So, what you wrote ….

Trump is known for his ‘shiny objects’ to distract … change the topic.

      Well, apply that to Francis.

I really wish I knew what the curia was up to these days.

I spoke with an 80-year old DEVOUT Catholic, who has stayed at the Domus. He says the pope dropping the titles is NO BIG DEAL. That ‘V.C.’ only saw light in the 12th century. So, no big deal. I don’t agree with him.

I think he has pulled the rug from underneath the papacy!

      Your thoughts, PLEASE. Thanks.

Yeh I agree with you…Francis drops random (or are they?) comments all the time. It’s not Twitter, but it might as well be. Both “heads of state” need to avoid that, but I doubt they ever will.

        Mark,
I will respond later. I have a post from a 75-year old Catholic Priest who has a doctorate in theology from Rome and has co-celebrated Mass with Paul VI & B16. SMILE. I have contacts.

I had not looked up V.C. as yet. THANKS. I am busy, heads down, working on a COMET book which I intend to publish on Easter. This Easter! So, yes, counting the one you have, I have 3 books going in parallel.

Check this out, my friends. https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/abp-vigano-has-pope-now-disavowed-being-vicar-of-christ
