Tiger Woods’ Much-Publicized Crash In A ‘Genesis GV80’ — Good Or Bad For ‘Genesis’?

by Anura Guruge

GV80 SUV driven by Tiger Woods vs smaller, sedan, the G70.

I have owned SUVs from both KIA & Hyundai. Over the last couple of years the occasional Genesis I have seen has always caught my eye.

Then a few months ago Genesis entered my life. I have to get a newer car than the 19-year Jaguar XJ8 that I drive. It has limited safety features & I am starting to worry about its reliability. So, for the long trips I do, I have started renting a car/SUV.

So, in Oct/Nov I started looking around for a car that would meet my needs. Though it broke my heart I ruled out another Jag. I do NOT trust their reliability — especially at the crazy prices they want for a fairly new one.

I toyed with a convertible BUT I also need, at a minimum, FWD — given the snow — & ideally, AWD. FWD/AWD convertibles are a rare commodity. Then, I compromised on a moonroof. Googled for “AWD moonroof” — &, of course, it could NOT be German. The KIA ‘Stinger’ kept on popping up. I heard good things about the Stinger. But, it got me thinking. Hyundai is the higher/more luxurious KIA. So, what did Hyundai have to offer. That is how I discovered the Genesis G70.

So, here is the irony. Just about the time Tiger Woods was involved in his accident, Teischan & I were at a Genesis dealing talking G70s. First time we had been to a Genesis dealership. Kind of uncanny. What a coincidence.

Seems like a positive to me; the crash is likely driver error and the car did a good job in keeping him alive. Real life crash test data!
