2021 ‘Lady Slippers’ In Central New Hampshire — Pre-Bloom, Still Green.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access this post from a year ago.

I was walking by the bank where we now get lady slippers on a regular, yearly basis when it occurred to me that I should look. WOW. I was impressed with myself. BANG. I saw them right away. I now know where they are real well.

I had expected them to be green & they were. I didn’t have my phone with me — yet again attesting my claim that my phone & I are not often together. So, I had to go back today to get these pictures.

One of the MANY JOYS of having this blog is that it is a permanent, indelible, pictorial day-by-day DIARY of my life — without any gaps. I just need to do the right search. BINGO. Last year’s corresponding post — 2-days later. WOW.

Today’s Collection Of Flora From My Morning Walk; May 5, 2021.

by Anura Guruge

No funga today. Just straight flora. It had rained, much, during the night. It was still drizzling. So, the flora was dripping. Great for my kind of photo.

Hope you like.

Today’s Collection Of Flora & Funga From My Morning Walk; May 3, 2021.

by Anura Guruge

Though the temps are far from warm, let alone hot, flora, tenacious as ever, are trying to make their presence felt. After the long, cold winters we endure it is such a delight to see color — & life.

The mushrooms were a treat. What tremendous colors. They look like cross-sections of brains. But, I have seen mushrooms on that very same log earlier in the year. I will have to keep an eye to see how they evolve.

Hope you like.

I Will Gladly Part With A Testicle For Some Bloody GLOBAL WARMING!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. 49F at 2:30pm. That was about as high as it got.

At 67, with no shortage, whatsoever of testosterone, I am sure I could get by for another 20-years on one good testicle — luckily, both of mine, are in tip-top shape. So, I will trade one testicle for a tiney, winey bit of GLOBAL WARMING.

Today was May 1st. May 1st.

When I woke up the temperature in Central New Hampshire was 37F (3C)! That is frigging crazy. May 1st & we are just above bloody freezing.

I have had it.

When I set off for my walk at 10am it was 41F (5C). That is insane. I had to bundle up, wear an insulated hat & gloves. May bloody 1st.

Where oh where is this global warming.

Can I, please, please, have some. Not much. Just a bit.

I am so done with being cold.

I believe 100% that we have climate change. I know because we in New Hampshire now have Global Cooling.

So, please don’t talk to me about Global Warming. I have two testicles that will tell YOU otherwise.

Saw This Big ‘Spotted Salamander’ Last Night.

by Anura Guruge

It was during my nightly, 11pm, 1-mile walk — last night. It was raining & misty. Ideal time for salamanders to come out — especially in Spring.

I was wearing my bright headlamps & I could see ‘it’ SHINING on the road. I KNEW it was not a snake! Way too late in the day for snakes.

I knew it was a salamander though I can’t ever recall seeing that one that long in New Hampshire. What we normally see, quite regularly are small orange salamanders. Again on wet & moist nights like last night.

Today We Picked 10 Ticks Off Our Harrier, Braxton!

by Anura Guruge

Yes, that is ‘Braxton’ our 7.5-year old Harrier. Yes, basically a bigger beagle. A British hunting dog.
Notice that unlike a Beagle he has no black.

If you count the ticks in the bowl it only comes to 9. I know. But, I picked one, straight from his nose before I brought him into the house. I needed help to remove the rest. Deanna picked the 9 above. She has better nails.

This is crazy. Early in the season & I did NOT take him in the woods. He walked on the road — albeit a dirt road.

Yes, we do spray stuff on them. Nothing seems to work & trust we we have tried so many things. Last night I ordered ‘K9 advantix II‘ from Amazon. That should be here by mid-week.

Lake Winnipesaukee [NH] 2021 Ice-Out: April 4 — 14th Joint Earliest On Record; Even Earlier Than Last Year.

by Anura Guruge

Ice Out 1999 to 2021.

Click to ENLARGE. Ice-out dates since 1999. Last column indicates # days into the year; i.e., days since January 1 of that year.

I take LEAP YEARS into account.
This year was NOT a LEAP YEAR.
So, April 5 this year,
in terms of days since Jan. 1,
is 94. If it had been a Leap Year
it would have been day #95.

Pretty amazing. Even earlier than last year — by two days. Coincidentally, it was again on a Monday. Monday’s, of late, have become a good day for ice-outs.

I had NOT expected this year to be this soon given that it was a COLD winter.

But, I know WHY we got this early date. WINDS. WINDS. WINDS. It has been a WINDY year. Last week we had unusually high winds. That is what broke up the ice.

I Added More Feeding Tubes My Ice-Storm Damaged Tree To Supplement It IV.

by Anura Guruge

The IV I installed last week is working remarkably well — even though we had 3-days of below-freezing temps. Yes, the IV froze but there was enough room for expansion & it did NOT split. I was glad.

I didn’t do anything the last few days because of the frigid temperatures. The tree was essentially dormant.

But, today, the temps. finally changed. We were in the 50s (F). Per the weather forecast we are not expecting any below freezing temps for the next 10-days. So, I installed 3 additional feeding pipes. Simpler. Not IVs. They have ‘tree trunk’ nurients.

I also give this tree the BEST POSSIBLE natural fertilizer each night. Twice a night. I pee on it. Look it up. Has concentrated Potassium, Nitrogen & Phosphates. That is what the best fertilizers contain. I kind of knew this. Checked on it the other day. I am doing the right thing. I am doing the BEST thing. SMILE. I am also saving water.

‘Needle Ice’ — Encountered Large Patches Today.

I think that I MUST have seen this phenomenon before, BUT I can’t honestly remember. There was lots of it in this one area. I took these pictures. I then had to use Google LENS to look it up. Neat.

Yes, the explanation makes sense. He have been in the 50Fs the last few days, BUT this morning the temperature was below freezing. So, BINGO. Neat. Really pretty. I had to break some to make sure it was indeed ice. It was on a trail that is rarely used by anyone but I. So, I was NOT harming anybody else’s enjoyment.

Enjoy. ICE NEEDLES.

Pretty amazing. Nature is SO DETERMINED. So anxious to propagate the species. You have to stop & wonder.

Yes, we have sprouts all over the place. Spring is springing. SMILE.
