As Of Today, December 13, 2020 — Evenings Are Getting Longer, Spring Is Around The Corner!

by Anura Guruge

The ‘Shortest Day‘, i.,e, the ‘Winter Solstice‘, is still 9-days away, i.e., December 21, 2020.

As of December 13, 2020, as you can see from above chart, evenings for us, in New Hampshire, are getting longer.

But that doesn’t mean days will start getting longer. Alas, it doesn’t. That only happens as of the Solstice. 9-days away — my FAVORITE DAY of the year.

The reason the days are still getting shorter is that Sunrise continues to be later and later. You can also see that in the chart.

But, this is IT in terms of early Sunsets. It will never get any later.

In a week, December 15, we will have an ADDITIONAL MINUTE in the evenings.

Great news. Spring is around the corner. Rejoice!

2020 Autumnal (Fall) Equinox In New Hampshire Will Be On Tuesday, September 22, 9:30am (Eastern).

Sunrise & Sunset Times for Concord, New Hampshire around the September Equinox.
(From Time-and-Date).

Note that daylight is NOT exactly 12 hours!
If anything we get closer to 12 hours 3 days later.
There is a reason for that. It is our latitude above the equator.
If we were closer to the equator it would have been closer to 12 hours.
See this explanation in Time-and-Date.

The Famed Alton (NH) Snow Camel, ‘Roger’, May Already Be History!

UPDATE

As I told you 3-days ago, Roger’s farm is for sale & I could not see any signs of Roger when I did some scouting from the road. I also recalled that I had not seen him in quite a while.

Then, Deanna managed to dig up the listing. It starts by talking of Roger, vis-à-vis Alton, basically in the past tense — viz., “ONCE …”

Very clear that Roger is no longer at the farm. That is pretty clear.

Not sure what the implications are.

What happened to Roger the Camel?

Drove by the farm, which is on Route 28, this morning & was very surprised to see the ‘For Sale‘ signs.

Haven’t been by there in over a week. So, not sure when the signs went up. Wow.

No idea why it would be for sale. The ‘young’ couple that owned it seems to have made a real go of it.

I got out to take pictures & maybe see ‘Roger‘. Didn’t see him or the bison. Just a few sheep.

Hhmmmm.

Can’t remember exactly when I last saw ‘Roger’. It was a few months ago. I had forgotten the bison!

Yikes. Is ‘Roger’ still there? We might have to make a movie: “Who Uprooted Roger Camel“.

They are at their best. I also found two totally new plants — meaning in a place where I have never seen them before. About 1.5-miles away from ‘MY’ site. That was cool. Made me happy. Made me SMILE. I hope it makes you smile too. SMILE.

Shot at NIGHT.

Pictures taken today, Friday, May 22 & last night. The purplish color at night is from my artificial lighting — i.e., the LED headlights I wear on my head.

A second batch of three have started to flower. So, this morning I had 6 flowers rather than three. Still less than in prior years.

Enjoy.

Only 3 that have flowered — so far.

2nd day they have been pink.

I have spotted a few other plants closeby, but no flowers on them yet.

So, this is today’s, i.e., May 20, picture. Enjoy.

As promised I have been checking on them daily. Today, for the first time, I could see the pink. Still quite faint.

I am sure the color will kick-in, fast, over the next few days.

I will take pictures, promise.

I go by everyday and invariably have a phone/camera with I.

These are the only ones I have seen so far in 2020.

Kind of pre-bloom.

Very green.

But, I now know where to look. Have been keeping an eye for the last few days.

First time I spotted the blooms.

I go by ‘here’ at least twice a day. SMILE.

The good or bad news is that I have plateaued. I am not going through cameras at a fast rate anymore. Plus, following the acquisition of my Google Pixel 2 for Christmas 2017 I no longer feel the need to have two cameras — a big one and a compact. The Google Pixel is my 2nd camera. So, just need one full-frame camera at any one time.

I kept my Sony a7 II for 690-days and took 30,455 pictures with it. I also kept the mega-zoom Nikon P900 around for long time but did not use it much after the first 9 months or so. The zoom was nice but I had become fond of BIG sensors.

Getting to know my new, 3-week old, Canon EOS RP. Need a couple more lenses. Plan is to keep it for at least a year, if not more. It seems pretty capable. Goal is to hang onto the lenses. That is why I went (bcak) to Canon.
