IF Bill Gates Really Wants To Tackle ‘Global Warming’ He Has To Start By Making Windows 10 More Efficient & Much Less Power Hungry.

by Anura Guruge

I saw Bill Gates on a talk show yesterday (i.e., Sunday) plugging his ‘Climate Change‘ book.

It then struck me. I am sure he wasn’t been totally hypocritical, BUT he is, personally, responsible for SO, SO, SO much wasted energy. Windows is a power hog. Windows can be made so much, so much more efficient. Forget the various ‘power saving’ modes. That is just the tip of the iceberg.

Windows is grossly inefficient. Make it 50% more efficient ….

We have BILLIONS of PCs running Windows. They are all consuming TRILLIONS & TRILLIONS of electrical wattage DAILY.

Many never think about this. So, here is your chance.

Dry Eyes, I Have Come To Appreciate, Should Not Be Overlooked.

by Anura Guruge

As l have chronicled here I had cataract surgery done on both my eyes — twice on my right eye — between November 2020 & mid-January 2021. I am pleased with the outcome. The surgeries were done at OCB, i.e., Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston, & I lucked out in getting assigned to the OUTSTANDING Dr. Theodor Sauer. Wow! What a doctor & a laudable human being. We was beyond great. Well 4-days prior to the surgeries & a month after each, I had to use medicated 3-in-1 eye drops (that I have already spoken about). Once those eye drops were done Dr. Sauer was insistent that I kept on using lubricated eye drops to keep my eyes from getting dry.

He was very adamant — in the nicest possible way. Explained that most folks, which included I, did not appreciate the significance & worth of keeping one’s eyes well lubricated — especially in the winter. He recommended these & gave me a some samples. Funnily enough a previous eye doctor had recommended the same brand.

Click to access Amazon product listing.

I value my eyes. So, I will do whatever I am asked to do. So, I have been using drops, daily, for the last few weeks. They definitely make a difference. Easier on the eye.

Then today I got this e-mail newsletter basically stressing what Dr. Sauer had told me.

So, I wanted to share it with you. Take note. Don’t mess with your eyes.

3-In-1 Custom Formulated Eye Drops For Cataract Surgery From ‘Imprimis Rx’.

by Anura Guruge

Prior to my initial cataract surgery (the day before Thanksgiving in 2020) I would talk to those that had had the surgery to get a feel as to what I should expect. Suffice to say I was a bit uneasy about my eyes cut open under local surgery. Everyone I spoke to was categorical in assuring me that I would not feel a thing & that it was a piece of cake. They were RIGHT. It is pretty miraculous. The other thing they all mentioned, without fail, was the eye drops that you had to use post-surgery & how vital it was not to forget using the drops. All those that I spoke had been given multiple bottles of drops & they had to use drops from each of the different bottles.

That, however, was not the case with I. I only used ONE bottle. SOME of the doctors at OCB, i.e., Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston, including the OUTSTANDING Dr. Theodor Sauer who was my surgeon, had started using a specially formulated 3-in-1 compound to make it easier on us. And it sure was. I did not have to contend with multiple bottles. Just one bottle. This specifically formulated compound, however, was only available from ‘Imprimis Rx’ — via prescription (& it was NOT covered by insurance). Imprimis Rx was a JOY to deal with. Some of nicest folks I have ever dealt with. Extremely helpful & responsive. In the end, given that I ended up having three surgeries (two on my right eye), I needed 3 bottles.

The drops worked well — from what I can tell. They would sometimes sting but would then settle down & prove to be extremely soothing. I confessed to the doctor that I was concerned that I was getting addicted to them. I know I used more that I should. But, that is all in the past. To be honest, my last bottle is not empty, & it sits on my bathroom counter, BUT I do not use it. I use over-the-counter eye drops as I am now supposed to use.

I am sharing this for those of you who might be getting cataract surgery in the future. You should definitely ask about these 3-in-1 drops from your surgeon. They could make the whole pre- & post surgery that much easier.

‘National Drink Wine Day’ Is NOT February 18; It Is Every Day Of The Year, January 1 To December 31.

by Anura Guruge

You can’t have just one day dedicated to drinking wine.

Drinking wine is a full-time, DAILY necessity. So, don’t fall into this trap of thinking that February 18 is ‘National Drink Wine Day‘.

National Drink Wine Day‘ is each & every day. Kapish?

Did You Know That Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes) Acted As A Real Detective To Clear A Wrongly Prosecuted Half-Indian Lawyer?

by Anura Guruge

Click image to read the UK ‘Daily Mail’ story from today.

Click to ENLARGE & read here. From Wikipedia. Look under: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Conan_Doyle

Though I am quite the ‘Sherlock Holmes‘ fan, I am, alas, quite ignorant as to his creator (the GREAT) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I did not, until today, even know he was a doctor. My loss.

Well, I happened to see this story (above) in the UK ‘Daily Mail’, which I read daily, & was both surprised & intrigued. I read most of it at once. I then, as is my wont, did some research. Wow. It is true. It is kosher & there is even a book & TV series available on ‘Amazon Prime Video‘. I sure plan to check the TV series out. It has to be good. I had to share this with you.

Garmin’s New ‘Enduro’ With Extended Battery Life Is Not For I; NO Maps & There is NO Solar Charging In My Winters!

by Anura Guruge

Thanks to the support of my friends at ‘heartratemonitorsUSA‘ I have, over the last 3-years, been lucky enough to get & wear the latest & greatest of Garmin watches — including even a MARQ. So, if I wanted I could have asked for an ‘Enduro‘ BUT I didn’t.

It is NOT for I.

First & foremost I do NOT need that extended battery life. Yes, it would be NICE, but charging my ‘Fenix 6 Pro Solar‘ is not a hassle. Though I use at least 2-hours of GPS every day, I only need to charge it every 3-days or so. I could actually go longer, but it is like topping up the gas tank in your car. When I get down to about ‘3-days left’ I like to charge it, just in case.

Plus, the ‘Enduro’ does NOT have maps. I do not in reality use my Garmin maps that often, BUT I like having them.

Plus, there is the whole SOLAR CHARGING thing. I actually got the ‘Fenix 6 Pro Solar (Titanium)‘, that I wear most of the time (rather than my ‘Fenix 6 Titanium‘) because Solar Charging intrigued I & I wanted to see how much solar I can get, in New Hampshire, in the Winter. I now KNOW the answer. I am not totally stupid & suspected what it would be like — & I was right. Like today. ZERO. NADA. Nothing — even though I was outside for nearly 3-hours.

So, no ‘Enduro’.

I suspect we will see a ‘Fenix 7’ or equivalent this year. Yes, I will get that.

Creating Amazon KDP Paperback Book Covers Using Just PowerPoint.

by Anura Guruge

My book covers may not be stellar, BUT I believe in the time worn adage that you should never judge a book by its cover. My books, as some of you know by now, are idiosyncratic — & I would NOT have it any other way. So, it would be crazy if I didn’t design the covers myself. Yes, of course, I have tried the ‘cover creators’ provided by KDP (& others). I find that they kind of force me into a straight-jacket. But, to be fair, they have given me inspiration & ideas.

I used to create my book covers using Word. SMILE. I had it all nailed down. I used a TABLE as the basis for the cover. That way I could set the height & width of each cell — one cell for the front cover, one for the back cover & another for the spine. It worked, & I successfully created over 25 covers that way.

Then it occurred to me, one fine day, that it might be even easier to create a cover using PowerPoint. There were TWO points in favor of this approach.

  1. With PowerPoint you can specify a CUSTOM slide size (via the DESIGN tab) to the exact height x width dimensions you need (& in my case specifying that in inches). There are NO margins you have to contend with. So, once you get from KDP — via the HELP section — the cover dimensions (via a set of two TEMPLATES), you can just bang them in & BINGO you have a slide that is the right size. In the above example, for a 166-page, 10″ x 7″ book, the required dimensions, including the TRIM was 14.63″ x 10.25″. So, I created a slide EXACTLY to that size. No margins. You can see that above.
  2. PowerPoint’s built-in ‘Save As PDF’ works a treat. No messing about. You don’t have to specify any options or parameters. Just a straight ‘Save As PDF’. Within seconds you have a PDF to the EXACT dimensions you (& KDP) need. That is it.

Once you know how many pages are in your book, you can get a KDP cover template …

Click to ENLARGE. How to get the ‘cover templates’ from KDP Help.

The templates are downloaded as a .ZIP. No problem. Just click on the zip file & you will see two files inside. Just copy them & save them somewhere else. One of the files is a PDF. Check the PROPERTIES on this file to get the cover dimensions. That is what you use to set up your PowerPoint custom slide size. The other file is a PNG (i.e., image file).

Once you have created your PowerPoint slide INSERT the PNG file. It should fit the slide 100%. Exact size. You can now really use it as a template. Keep it as the BACKGROUND.

PNG template that you INSERT into PowerPoint. You can CREATE over it. Delete it towards the end or even just keep it in the background.

I Am Skeptical As To The ‘Validity Of The Fibromyalgia Blood Test — The So Called “FM/a”.

by Anura Guruge

I only heard of this test, “FM/a“, via a radio commercial, this week. I was immediately intrigued. As some of you may know, I know a fair amount about Fibromyalgia given that my ‘Central Pain’ book deals with it in much detail.

What worried me about this test is that we now know that fibromyalgia is a central nervous system disorder. I didn’t think we had any tests that could detect such disorders.

This test claims to test immune system imbalances. I, at least for now, am skeptical.

This test is supposed to ‘rule out’ other diseases. I am not sure I buy that.

The folks promoting this test — for MONEY, of course — have EXTENDED what was the original SCOPE of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia was about distributed, widespread pain. These folks have extended this to include symptoms of DEPRESSION as well. Given the EXTENDED scope a lot of folks — mainly women (alas) — will fall into the ‘dragnet’. I am sure that MOST in this vulnerable group will LIKE to be told they have fibromyalgia. To them it would be a relief, a vindication. I know. I have LIVED with ‘fibromyalgia’ — though I do NOT have it.

There used to be the 11-point DEFINITIVE TEST for fibromyalgia. That has now been DEBUNKED. Even the original creator of it, a supposed doctor, has admitted that he was wrong. Tens of millions of American women were told they had fibromyalgia based on that 11-point test. Well the test was FAKE.

So ….

I am not convinced.

Check out my book. You can read it for free in many places. SMILE.

YouTube Videos.
Click to watch.

Some, alas & inexplicably, have NO SOUND. So, don’t panic.

Impressive. Cute. Touching.

The illumination, with 46 pillars of light to denote that Joe Biden will be the 46th President is symbolic & a nice touch.

You should definitely watch at least one of the videos.

Pity that two of the videos (the first two) do not have sound.
