Did You Know That ‘AOC’, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Has An Asteroid Named After Her?

by Anura Guruge

Donald Trump will be SO, SO livid IF he ever finds out.

So don’t tell him. OK? Our secret.

This wasn’t recent either! It was named after her c. 2007 — eleven years ahead of her being elected to the United States House of Representatives.

This is pretty impressive stuff. She got this honor, because as a high school senior (aged 18), from Yorktown High School [Yorktown Heights, New York], in 2007, she won second place in the 2007 ‘Intel International Science and Engineering Fair’ for her microbiology project. Wow.

I really don’t know much about her. Did not even suspect this.

Trump will now want Jupiter renamed after him. But, maybe NOT Jupiter. Mars would be more appropriate and it is a GOOD COLOR match.

The asteroid itself had been discovered in 2000 at the Lincoln Laboratory.

A pretty common or garden asteroid in the asteroid belt. Nothing special. Decent size. Just over a mile across. So, not huge, but not tiny either.

“The Grinch” Movie (2018) — Cute, Very Christmassy & Great For Younger Kids.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the IMDb.com listing.

They got it right. Spot on. Nothing profound or pretentious. Just ‘The Grinch’ per Dr. Seuss using imagery very true to Dr. Seuss. Like an illuminated, vividly colored Dr. Seuss book.

They kept the graphics, intentionally, 1950ish but with great 21st century rendering. Great colors, voices, songs and music. Very festive. They also kept it short: 86 minutes. That was good.

Teischan (12), who tells me she has watched the old (i.e., 2000) movie multiple times, wanted to see it badly. We both agreed that she was a tad too old for it — though she liked it. She thought it was too short (compared to the ‘original’). It has been 18 years since I saw the 2000 version. I think I like this one better. Works better in cartoon form since that is more true to original.

Definite must for younger kids. We went to a Thursday afternoon (i.e., 3:20pm) matinee at the Concord, New Hampshire, “Regal 10“. I knew it wouldn’t be packed, and it wasn’t. There were just 5 others — 3 of them kids. The kids squealed and laughed. They liked it. And that is what matters.

It was good. Definitely recommend it.

Error In MS Excel 2016 — Treats ‘1900’ As A Leap Year, And It Was NOT!

by Anura Guruge

Click picture to ENLARGE.

IF you really were a Year 2000 aficionado and followed all of the Y2K drama you would know that all centurial years are NOT Leap Years.

For centurial years it is NOT enough to be divisible just by 4. It also has to be divisible by 400. This is was another major improvement to the Gregorian calendar to keep the year lengths as close to 365.242199 days as possible.

So, 1700, 1800, 1900 were NOT LEAP YEARS since they are NOT divisible by 400.

But, 2000 was, because it is divisible by 400.

Excel has 1900 as a LEAP YEAR.

Yes, I am probably the ONLY one in the whole world that would NOTICE and CARE.

But, I do a LOT of date span calculations — example when I am working out ICE-OUTS for lakes. In such calculations, being the pedant I am, I take into account Leap Years. Otherwise you are mistating some date spans.

That is how I noticed.

You can check it out.

I Second (& Third) Jimmy Kimmel Re. Senator John McCain Being A Hero — Again & AGAIN.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Jimmy & Joan Kimmel on Twitter a few minutes ago.

I used to be HUGE fan of John McCain — and now I am BACK to being a HUGE fan.

He was a hero and of that there could never be any doubt. That the DOTARD got away with questioning Senator McCain’s hero status and still got elected President — to I, says a LOT about the American psyche.

I had the honor of meeting Senator McCain — 17 years ago, during his 2000 Presidential bid. My son, Matthew, 7-years old at the time, taking my lead, was also a big McCain fan. One Monday morning in February 2000 McCain was scheduled to speak at the Gilford Fire Station. I lived in Gilford at the time. I kept Matthew home that day so we could go see McCain.

We went early in the morning — and it was COLD. There might have been 80 people there, Matthew by far the youngest. He got himself right up to the front and watched McCain — TRANSFIXED.

And now for the NEAT part.

When he finished speaking the FIRST thing McCain did was come up to Matthew and KNEEL DOWN! Yes, he knelt down and talked with Matthew and gave him his autograph. It was total silence in the room. Everybody just watched. I was SO proud and happy.

Then came Elián González the then 7-year old Cuban boy. Elián was the same age as Matthew, and like Elián dad, I too was divorced and only had joint-custody of Matthew. This is where John McCain and I could NOT see eye to eye. As far as I was concerned — and it is still the case — a FATHER’s rights are paramount. Nothing can get in the way of that. IF the father wanted Elián back in Cuba — that had to be THE LAW. So, that was when I ceased to be as fond of John McCain.

But, I will NOW forgive him.

Bravo, Senator McCain. YOU are the MAN. The ETERNAL hero.

Panasonic Lumix LX200 To Be A Reality — But Is It Too Little, Too Late; DFD AF The One Biggie.

“The New Camera”, on June 23, 2016, also carried a story. Click image to access their original post.

So the much anticipated Panasonic Lumix LX200 is indeed going to be a reality — to be announced in September at ‘Photokina 2016‘.

But the current rumors don’t mention anything about a new lens (setup). If the lens continues to be the f/1.7 to 2.8, 24-75mm zoom, as in the Lumix LX100, that would be a dissapointment — though this is one heck of a lens.

Much is being made of the 20MP sensor BUT there is no guarantee that the LX200 will actually offer a 20MP mode! Remember the LX100 has a 16MP sensor but the highest resolution offered by the LX100 is 13MP because of the ‘crop-compensation’ favored by Panasonic for this camera. IF they continue with that same approach the maximum resolution of the LX200 will be 16MP — which is respectable, but nothing special these days.

However, what will make the LX200 special, as is the case with the LX100, is a Micro Four Thirds sensor — a large sensor for a fixed-zoom, compact camera of this size and price.

And then there is Panasonic’s new ‘Depth of Defocus’ (DFD) autofocus system which claims to provide faster AF than what is possible with ‘Contrast Detect’ or ‘Phase-Detect’. That is a nice touch but AF on the LX100 wasn’t that sluggish or poor.

So it all boils down to image quality, IQ, versus price. Panasonic’s own DMC-ZS100, albeit with a 1″ sensor, can, per the reviews, match IQ and offer 3x the zoom for the same price.

Hence my concern that unless the lens is updated the LX200 might not be that compelling. The tiltable-screen a nice-to-have but unlikely to be a game-changer.

Fuji X-T2 Likely To Face Stiff IQ Competition From Olympus E-M1 Mk II — 50% Cheaper?

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk II has been on my radar for a long time.

Olympus was a brand I have considered as competition to the Fuji since they also do offer decent ‘direct control’ (i.e., lots of control dials) and attractive styling. Their main drawback, alas, is their unfaltering commitment to Micro Four Thirds sensors.

Over the last year with their 5-axis image stabilization and ‘High Resolution Mode‘ Olympus really has been pushing the envelope.

The HANDHELD ‘High Resolution’ would be a game changer. Especially if this also ends up offering better autofocus.

I actually suspect that Fuji brought FORWARD the X-T2 announcement so that it can get a head start on the E-M1 Mk II.

Focus and IQ wise Olympus may already have stolen the march over Fuji. Funnily enough a new thread on this very topic was started on the DPReview “Micro Four Thirds” forum yesterday (and it wasn’t done by I). Here is the link.

These were the ONLY 7 cameras included. Seems a tad limited. I would have liked to have seen at least ONE Pentax.

We know that the Fuji X-T2, in terms of technical specifications, will be near identical to the X-Pro2, the difference being in the viewfinder department.

And they CONCLUDE with this! Pretty conclusive.

Having now owned a newly released 2016 Fuji X-series, the Fujifilm X-E2s to wit, for a month, the first Fuji X I have ever owned, I am having some serious doubts as to Fuji’s focus/autofocus capabilities. I will actually contend that, overall, it is rather poor — and that is after I have applied all the June 9, 2016 firmware updates to improve focus performance.

I have not paid any attention to any Nikon cameras over the last 2 years. For a start I love the notion of “mirrorless” and Nikon is all DSLR (though that could change shortly).

Over the last few days I have been forced to consider the Nikon D500. To get a Nikon DSLR would be a HUGE about-turn for me. Plus I am not sure I want to deal with a heavy cameras. I like that mirrorless cameras are light. But focus is paramount to I. So I am thinking whether I should just bite the bullet and get a D500 and say heck with the X-T2! And I thought the X-T2 was going to be my dream camera. I am renting an X-T1 soon. I guess I should rent a D500 too. Renting a Nikon would be more complicated and expensive. I don’t have any Nikon (compatible) lenses. Whereas with the X-T1 I can use all my X-E2s lenses.

This is big quandary. I know nothing about ‘new’ Nikons. Yes, I have owned Nikons but not recently and never at this level.

Yikes! I did not want to find myself here.

No Google Doodle For Vesak 2016 — In Sri Lanka Or Anywhere Else!

by Anura Guruge

No Google Doodle for Vesak 2016. Disappointing. I had asked for one — for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is not doing that well in the Google Doodle stakes of late.

Could be because it is a religious holiday, BUT in 2000 Google did do a Doodle for Easter!

Those Complaining About Hillary Clinton’s Superdelegates Don’t Remember Bush v. Gore 2000 Presidential Election.

With any election you have to play and WIN by the pre-stated rules.

Superdelegates, whether you like them or not, are very much a part of the Democratic Party apparatus and rules. They feel that the party needs them and the notion and composition of the Superdelegates would have been implemented by the PARTY democratically, following the established parliamentary rules. So you have to abide by them. If you don’t like them get them changed or leave the party.

It is laughable when ANY American complains about proper representation in Presidential elections.

The U.S. does not have a Presidential election that genuinely represents the popular vote.

The 2000 elections highlighted that mightily.

Al Gore got more of the POPULAR VOTE but that did NOT matter.

President is chosen by Electoral College votes.

No different to having Superdelegates.

Q.E.D.

Ahead of Super Tuesday 2016 have you seen Hillary Clinton’s lead over Bernie Sanders with the Superdelegates apportioned out!

Staggering.
