Media Speculation As To Whether The Shameful Sri Lanka Bombing Could Have Been Stopped — PLEASE Forgive Me For Smiling.

by Anura Guruge

This from CNN. Click to access. Google for plenty more.

I know that this is NOT a smiling matter, BUT PLEASE forgive me for doing so.

IF ONLY you knew of the machiavellian machinations of Sri Lanka politics and how devious, corrupt and unscrupulous they can be.

Sri Lanka politics is like the proverbial iceberg. You only see the TIP of it. 90% is cloak-and-dagger.

There is always more to Sri Lanka politics than outsiders will EVER be able to discern or dissect.

So, if you haven’t already read it, PLEASE read my first post on this subject. There is MORE to this than we will EVER KNOW. Do not jump to conclusions.

So, this is the MAIN Intelligence document — that was NOT acted upon.

Lots of OLD fashioned date stamps and endorsements by pen.

Just like the documents and files my father, a civil servant, dealt with 50-years ago!

No e-mails?

This is how things get delayed, not acted upon.

Not good.

The red tape of the Sri Lankan government can choke an elephant.

Sri Lanka, Alas, Got Its 15-Minutes Of Media Fame In The U.S. Today — 1st Time Many Would Have Heard The Name.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. This from CNN. All media outlets featured the story.

Yes, yes, yes. There was the 2004 ‘Christmas’ tsunami — but, Sri Lanka had to share that tragic news with, at a minimum with Thailand & Indonesia.

Not so with the Easter 2019 atrocity. Sri Lanka on its own. TV news started with the Sri Lanka story. This was BIG.

I can assure you that this would have been the first time millions of Americans ever heard of ‘Sri Lanka’. I know that they don’t know.. I live with it every day.

As of now some will remember — alas with the ‘terrorist’ connotation.

Well, I guess we can’t have it all.

Sri Lanka, To It Credit, Now Teaching Kids How To Deal With A Tsunami.

by Anura Guruge

This is a great move and the Sri Lankan authorities should be commented.

It is not a case, in this instance, of ‘too little, too late‘. There was no precedent in living memory for the 2004 tsunami that devastated southwest Sri Lanka and claimed so many lives. You can’t be prepared for something that you never knew could happen.

But, now we know and they are taking action.

I have always maintained, since 2004, that SO MANY kids lost their lives in the tsunami because we are NOT accustomed to TIDES. Though it is an island in the middle of Indian Ocean, due to the shape of the Continental Ledge in that area, Sri Lanka has minimal — to negligible — tides. Around 6″, both in height and reach. You can’t detect that. So we grow up not knowing about tides. That was definitely the case with I. I would read about tides in the English books I devoured and ASSUMED (wrongly) that we didn’t have tides because we were by the equator,

So, prior to the tsunami coming in, the ocean went out. That was NEW to all. They had no experience of the ocean ebbing and froing. Yes, of course, they should have known/realized that something MAJOR was awry. But, we are not very smart either. So adults and kids went out on the beach and were picking up the fish that were getting left behind in the sand. Then the tsuami came in at great speed. Too late.

So this training is good.

For those of us in the U.S. SPOT the irony. In Sri Lanka they have tsunami drills at school. In the U.S. we have active shooter drills! Wow. I know what I would prefer.

The 2004 Tsunami That Devastated SW Sri Lanka Happened This Day 13-Years Ago.

by Anura Guruge

This was quite the thing. It wreaked havoc on the the southern part of the SW coast, though the earthquake and the start of the tsunami were to the east. Yes, the east coast was not harmed as much as the south west. The waves wrapped around.

None of my relatives or anybody that I know was affected. That might not be as amazing as it sounds in that I had left Ceylon/Sri Lanka 37-years earlier — plus all my relatives lived slightly north of where the devastation ended.

I do have a theory about why so many Sri Lankans, especially kids, drowned — MOST of them that had gone out along the beach when the ocean retreated, living tons of fish and sealife exposed. The kids in particular ran towards the receding ocean never giving any thought that the water HAD to come back. My explanation: we have negligible tides in Sri Lanka because of an unique shaping of the continental shelf. Folks do NOT see the ocean go in-and-out. This was a novelty. A shame.

How the Buddhist reacted to the huge loss in life was SAD. Folks, including my adoptive father, blamed it on MASS KARMA coming together. And then there were all of these accounts of how Buddha statues miraculously survived the onslaught. But, since Buddha is not a god, never was and is no longer around, what I want to know is who protected the statues and wouldn’t it have been better to ditch the statues and save the kids?

Christmas this year, i.e., 2015, falls on the Full Moon.

This is rather special.
It does NOT happen as often as you think.

IF you have an exceptional memory for matters such as this you may believe that you actually remember this happening not that long ago — say 2004, 11 years ago. Actually the Full Moon in 2004 was on Boxing Day, i.e., December 26th, rather than the 25th.

The last time Christmas was on the Full Moon was in 1977.

Statistically a full moon will fall on a specific date, in this case Christmas, every 18.61 years. But Leap Years messes this up. Hence the 38 year gap in this case (essentially twice the ’19’ year gap).

The next Christmas on a Full Moon will be in 2034 — 19 years from now. Next one will be 2053.

So this is SPECIAL. Enjoy.
