The Great ‘Dwarf Planet’ Scam Perpetrated By The Supposedly August International Astronomical Union (IAU).

That table above, from my 2011 book ‘Dwarf Planets‘, contains all the background you need to understand this scam.

So, this was from a book published 9-years ago. Also in the table we have 5 (& only 5) Dwarf Planets — the last of which, Humea, was designated as such in September 2008.

September 2008 is coming up to 12-years.

In those 12-years the IAU has not designated any other Dwarf Planets.

We had 5 Dwarf Planets in Sept. 2008, we still have 5 Dwarf Planets in June 2020.

NO. NO. NO.

Dwarf Planets, of course, are very different from Planets. That is why Pluto was reclassified a Dwarf.

Yes, we don’t have many planets & yes, the last was discovered a very, very long time ago.

Not so with Dwarfs. We have THOUSANDS that appear to meet the criteria. They have LONG LISTS of possible Dwarf Candidates.

But, the IAU has not done anything in terms of expanding the pool of Dwarfs since 2008.

And therein lies the scam.

It would appear that the IAU has had second — if not third, fourth or fifth — thoughts about Dwarf Planets.

It would appear that they think that they screwed up. But, they are too august & proud to say that. So, instead they are hoping to atrophy the issue & category.

Well, I, for one, will not let that happen.

So, now YOU know.

‘Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation’ (tDCS) For Depression & Chronic Pain Now Available INEXPENSIVELY.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the “Apex” Website — which is currently selling tDCS units, for home use, without a prescription, for $149.00 (plus shipping).

I talked about tDCS
in my ‘Central Pain Syndrome‘ (CPS) book.

Click to ENLARGE and read here.

With cranium referring to the ‘skull’, transcranial means through the skull.

So, of the 4 non-invasive cortical techniques now available, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) & Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) refer to brain stimulation methods, applied through the skull — in the form of magnetic pulses in the case of TMS and very-low electrical currents (applied to the forehead) in the case of tDCS.

Given its use of electrical currents, tDCS is ‘similar’ to ECT — the huge difference being that tDCS uses a fraction of the current applied with ECT — probably 1/400th. ECT can only be administered under general anesthesia and as such is an expensive and time-consuming process. tDCS can now be done at home in 20-minute sessions! Big difference.

TMS is also expensive.

For what it might cost you to get a few sessions of TMS, you can buy your own tDCS unit!

Think about it.

I will tell you more about tDCS in the coming days. OK?

‘Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation’ (TMS) For Depression (& Chronic Pain): Brainsway vs. Neurostar.

by Anura Guruge

Into to TMS
from my ‘Central Pain Syndrome‘ (CPS) book.

In the U.S., from what I can determine, the two main (if not only) options for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is based on Neurostar technology or Brainsway technology.

Though they are both classed as TMS they differ in terms of the magnetic stimulation techniques used.

The Brainsway supposedly represents the newer technology. It uses a bigger, more encapsulating H-coil that does cover a larger portion of the brain — and supposedly can go deeper. Neurostar, a pioneer in TMS, uses a 8-coil that does not envelop the brain as much as the H-coil. It is claimed that the H-coil can stimulate brain ’tissue’ 2.4 – 5.7 times deeper than the 8-coil. However, it should also be noted that it is easier to have Sham H-coils (i.e., placebo coils) than it is with 8-coils!

A Brainsway session is 15 minutes shorter per session than a Neurostar session; 22 minutes vs. 37 minutes.

Neurostar uses rTMS (as described in my book above).

Brainstar calls its process Deep TMS (dTMS). I cannot get anybody to tell me, as yet, whether dTMS uses a faster or slower ‘repetition’ rate (i.e., the rate of pulsing) than rTMS.

The Brainstar is still relatively new.

From what I can find there are two other companies that offer TMS products: Magstim and Magvita. I, however, have not found any ‘doctors’ offering TMS using these devices anywhere around New England. I will do more research.

Though only approved for treating Depression per se, TMS, whether rTMS or dTMS, is a viable treatment option for ‘Central Pain Syndrome‘ (CPS) and other instances of Chronic Pain, including Fibromyalgia, since any degree of depression exaggerates your perception of pain.

TMS was FDA approved for treating treatment-resistant depression as as of 2008.

‘Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation’ (TMS) A Promising Cure For Chronic Pain as In ‘Central Pain Syndrome’.

by Anura Guruge

From my ‘Central Pain Syndrome‘ (CPS) book.

An interesting treatment option for ‘Central Pain Syndrome‘ (CPS).

It is said to be effective for treatment-resistant depression and is FDA approved as such (as of 2008).

At least some of the pain in chronic pain scenarios is due to depression. So it is possible that TMS works on pain by tackling the depression.

Just want to make sure that you are aware of this treatment option for chronic pain such as that of Central Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.

President Obama’s Speech At Hillary’s DNC Convention Reminded Me Why I Knocked On 450+ Houses For Him In 2008.

by Anura Guruge

Click for CNN original. Google for tons of other coverage. Try and watch at least SOME of this magisterial speech.

What a speech.

What a speaker.

What a MAN.

Reminded me why I campaigned for him in both 2008 & 2012.

Wow. WOw. WOW!

So effortlessly magisterial. A pleasant, approachable, often SMILING demeanor THROUGHOUT as is always his style. Such a marked contrast to Trump’s scowling and anger.

He and I have differed majorily over Obamacare. I have called him some choice names. But in the end he is QUITE the President. Amazing human being. We are so privileged.

Savor this speech. Get your teenagers to watch at least a few minutes.

People will talk about this speech in decades to come.

I had no idea as to his religion. Just assumed, given that he was from Vermont, that he was Christian.

I LIKE BERNIE. Have done for years. I would like to see him as President. I think he will make a damn good President. Better than Obama. (Did I just say that? Moi, who campaigned so ardently, in 2008 and 2012, for Obama.)

I am shocked that I, an avowed political junkie, did not know this. Was having dinner with a bunch of non-Christians last night, some from Israel, when this came up. I thought they were pulling my leg.

Do YOU think Donald knows this?

I am not sure whether the U.S. will go for a non-Christian in 2016 AFTER their bold experiment with Obama. But, I could be wrong. I hope I am wrong.

It is just that I was taken back.

Well, Lake Winnipesaukee 2015 Ice-Out as I predicted on Monday, and reiterated yesterday, happened on Friday, April 24, 2015. The official time was 4:34 pm. Shame that they did not take some poetic license with that so that we could all have said that 2015 ice-out ici was 4/24 at 4:24. C’est la vie.

Now, you have to please excuse me. Given that by nature and profession I am somewhat scientific — and have a love of dates and calendars — I can’t just go along that ice-out was on April 24. The problem, as I have oft stated, has to do with leap-years. This was not a leap-year. If it was, TODAY, April 24 would have been April 23. Get it. So I count ice-out in terms of actual days since January 1 of the year. So today, April 24, 2015, (not being a leap year), is day 113. OK? Are cool on that. Day 113.

I went through the numbers last night. But I will re-cap.

Ice-Out has happened 12 times on the 113th day, in 1896, 1912 & 2008, which were all leap years, that having been on April 23rd. [In 1920, another leap year, April 24 was the 114th day!]

During the 128 years we know of ice-out has happened 82 times PRIOR to the 113th day; i.e., 64% of the time.

In 34 years the ice-out happened on the 114th day of later.

The record being the 132nd day in 1888; i.e., May 12, 1888.

The last time it was April 24 per se was 1997.

The last time it was the 113th day was much more recent, i.e., 2008.

Here are two charts. I might enforce copyright on both IF they are not attributed when reused. Click to ENLARGE.

New Hampshire Lakes Region (Alton) Dodges, Just, The ‘Ice Storm’ Of December 2013.

It was close, viz. this weekend’s, i.e., December 21 – 22, 2013, ice storm for Central New Hampshire, particularly the Lakes Region.

I don’t trust or bother with WMUR’s weather forecast at the local level. They can’t, obviously, tell me what is likely to happen in East Alton. The best they can do, and will do, is to talk about the ‘Lakes Region’ in general, and that as I know, is a large diverse area that covers many sins. So I check the weather maps by hand and also rely on ‘weather underground’ which does try to provide more specific, local forecasts. It was close. Touch-and-go.

But, we appear to have, so far, dodged the worst. Not much icing till Monday morning (i.e., this morning). No power failures on Sunday — though I had ‘warmed up’ my two generators on Friday for what I thought would be the eventuality. I know we still have a couple of hours of annoying, light precipitation to contend with. My thermometer, 30′ above ground, says it is 34F.

As the pictures show we do have icing. I didn’t go running Sunday or today. Saturday was my ‘day off’ on my ‘3-days-on, 1-day-off‘ schedule that gives me 6 days of running a week. So I haven’t run, or shovelled snow, in 3 days. Feel totally bloated. But not a bad thing. Every once in awhile this old, decrepit body, on its last legs, can do with a bit of  break. I guess I have no choice but to pound up the hill, wheezing, panting and grunting, as I always do, with the two dogs. I think they miss the run too.

These are pictures from 10:30 am, Monday, December 23, 2013.

Remembering, With A Shudder, The December 2008 New Hampshire Ice Storm — And Pictures Of What Was Quite Beautiful.

Anura Guruge, June 8, 2013.

Anura Guruge

Though I have lived in New Hampshire, year around, since 1986, this was but the second major ice storm that I had weathered — the prior one being that, exactly a decade earlier, that hit the Lakes Region quite hard.

In the scheme of things, we, in Alton, got off quite lightly. We were without power for ‘just’ 24 hours. That was before we got our two generators. My biggest concern was keeping this 4-story house warm. I succeeded quite well — to Deanna’s amazement. Yes, we, of course, had the wood stove in the basement going full tilt. I used all the gas burners in the kitchen stove. I even used candles. That the house was but 2 years old and well insulated helped. The temperature in the main living areas of the house dropped about 12 degrees during that time. Yes, of course, we rushed off looking to buy a generator. We drove as far as Biddeford, ME.

But, we lucked out. Deanna’s sister in ‘Rockland’, ME bailed us out. She, a good SEARS customer, located two generators — in Augusta, I think. I told to buy BOTH. She and her husband went and picked them up in their big truck and drove them down to us … in the dark. No sooner did they get here and we unloaded the generators, took them out of their boxes — the power came on. We lucked out.

I was also concerned about the water in the central heating pipes freezing. I LIKE to have antifreeze in those pipes. We hadn’t done that in this house as yet. I got it done that week — by Foley. Foley actually is not in favor of it! They worry about the corrosion it causes and the fact that water with antifreeze, because of its lower density, tends to leak. I still have antifreeze in my pipes BUT they dilute it every year!

But, I strongly recommend antifreeze in your pipes.

Here are some pictures from the ice storm.
It sure was pretty.
