The Rumored Sony a9 MIGHT Be Perfect For My Needs.

The Sony a9 rumors have cropped up again.

Not clear whether this a9 is the same as the much anticipated Sony a7 III or indeed a very different camera.

One thing seems to be coalescing — i.e., that it is going to be a ‘low resolution’, i.e., 20 MP camera.

I find that intriguing.

The only way that makes sense to me is IF it like the 12 MP Sony a7S (II) is to have outstanding low-light performance.

The rumors don’t mention that but talk about the ‘FASTEST AF, EVER‘!

This might also have to do with low-light since light plays such a big role in AF.

So the a9 might in essence be an updated a7S II with a 20MP sensor.

24 MP, which I now have, with my Sony a6000 is overkill for my needs. I don’t really want to go beyond that, e.g., 42 MP. That would just be too cumbersome for my needs.

20 MP, with OUTSTANDING low light performance and fast AF would be GREAT for my needs.

So, I am all ears.

I have YET to get the Sony a6500 I was supposed to get last year!

Nothing to do with funds, all to do with TIME.

I was in the midst of writing yet ANOTHER book, my 27th. I didn’t want to get a new camera until that book was done. Didn’t want to be distracted.

That book is done and is currently being proofed.

So, I am ready to buy my ‘new/next’ camera.

But, I am NO LONGER sure I want the a6500!

I am going Sony Full Frame.

Come on. I am entitled. My bucket list.

I have never owned a digital full frame and I do not want to die without having played around with one! Simple as that.

So I am thinking Sony a7 II rather than Sony a6500.

But, I don’t want to order an a7 II if a a7 III or 20MP a9 is just down the road.

So, that is my dilema.

Not a bad one. I still have the a6000 and Nikon P900. So it isn’t as if I don’t have a camera,

A nice problem to have.

I Don’t Think Panasonic ‘LX15’ Is The Successor To LX100; The Once Rumored ‘LX200’.

This cannot be the successor to the Panasonic Lumix LX100.

Why? Simple reason.

Direct control, à la Fuji, was a trademark of the LX100. There was NO PSAM dial. Instead you had a shutter speed dial with ‘A’. This is what the top of a LX100 looks like.

The LX15 is NOT an enthusiast’s camera. It is a consumer compact.

So a real LX200 could still be in the offing.

Panasonic ‘LX200’, i.e., Successor To LX100, Now Called ‘LX15’ — But Not On Rumor List For Photokina 2015 Unveiling.

A Chinese site does have this Panasonic registration for a “LX15
— in Chinese.

Use link above to access Chinese original. This is a Google translation. Click to ENLARGE. Says it is a 20MP 4/3rd sensor. So looks like the anticipated LX200.

All rumors and conjecture as yet. So this can change. Interesting that the Panasonic ‘LX200‘ or ‘LX15’ is NOT included as a possibility in the September 19, 2016 announcement though much has been said about the LX15 in the last couple of weeks.

Why Panasonic would call it LX15 rather than say LX110, LX150 or LX200 is yet another Japanese mystery.

The 20MP four-thirds sensor definitely hints that it is a follow-up on the LX100.

Panasonic Lumix LX200 To Be A Reality — But Is It Too Little, Too Late; DFD AF The One Biggie.

So the much anticipated Panasonic Lumix LX200 is indeed going to be a reality — to be announced in September at ‘Photokina 2016‘.

But the current rumors don’t mention anything about a new lens (setup). If the lens continues to be the f/1.7 to 2.8, 24-75mm zoom, as in the Lumix LX100, that would be a dissapointment — though this is one heck of a lens.

Much is being made of the 20MP sensor BUT there is no guarantee that the LX200 will actually offer a 20MP mode! Remember the LX100 has a 16MP sensor but the highest resolution offered by the LX100 is 13MP because of the ‘crop-compensation’ favored by Panasonic for this camera. IF they continue with that same approach the maximum resolution of the LX200 will be 16MP — which is respectable, but nothing special these days.

However, what will make the LX200 special, as is the case with the LX100, is a Micro Four Thirds sensor — a large sensor for a fixed-zoom, compact camera of this size and price.

And then there is Panasonic’s new ‘Depth of Defocus’ (DFD) autofocus system which claims to provide faster AF than what is possible with ‘Contrast Detect’ or ‘Phase-Detect’. That is a nice touch but AF on the LX100 wasn’t that sluggish or poor.

So it all boils down to image quality, IQ, versus price. Panasonic’s own DMC-ZS100, albeit with a 1″ sensor, can, per the reviews, match IQ and offer 3x the zoom for the same price.

Hence my concern that unless the lens is updated the LX200 might not be that compelling. The tiltable-screen a nice-to-have but unlikely to be a game-changer.

Rumored Panasonic Lumix LX200 Unlikely To Offer 20MP & Needs A Lens Tweak To Make It Special.

by Anura Guruge

lx200spcesleaked

The inevitable rumors of a Panasonic Lumix LX200 — the successor to the widely popular Lumix LX100 (which I own) — have surfaced again today, with a vengeance.

The LX100, announced in September 2014, is now getting old in the tooth and Panasonic no doubts knows that the LX100 owner base, including I, will happily cough up $900 for the follow-on, if it is the LX200.

But the rumored specs. don’t reflect reality from the PERSPECTIVE of one that owns and uses, near daily, a Lumix LX100.

The sensor more than likely will be a micro four thirds 20 megapixel from Sony. OK. But that doesn’t mean the LX200 will be a 20MP camera IF Panasonic perseveres with its ‘cropping’ approach. The LX100 has a 16MP sensor but the MOST you get is 12.7MP at the 3:2 aspect ratio. IF the LX200 follows suit the most we will get, at 3:2, is 15.2MP.

SO STOP TALKING 20MP unless we know what the crop is going to be. Yes, of course, Panasonic could OEM a 26MP sensor and then, with that crop, we could get 20MP.

Panasonic’s ‘Depth of Defocus‘ (DFD) autofocus would be nice BUT if you have a LX100 you will know that autofocus is not half bad. Plus I use Manual Focus at least 50% of the time. Isn’t that the point of owning a ‘real’ camera like the LX100?

Larger OLED viewfinder. Yep, that would be nice, BUT not a huge game changer. The electronic viewfinder on the LX100 isn’t great BUT it isn’t bad either.

Of course higher ISO will be nice BUT with a micro four thirds what price will we pay in terms of noise?

Built-in ND filter? Not a biggie for I and as such NOT a game changer for I.

Built-in flash. I just had a look at my LX100. Not sure WHERE they could put one WITHOUT making the body bigger and bulkier and the current LX100 is about as BIG as I am willing to contend.

What would be really nice is more zoom and more SPEED. SMILE. Might be hard to do. But even another 25mm would help. That would be a biggie.

So the bottom line is let’s be realistic. Folks who are propagating the rumors (and I THANK them for it) aren’t LX100 aficionados and as such are not thinking things through

But I will most likely upgrade to a LX200 the minute it is available. Deanna has already said, knowing my propensity to get new cameras every few months, that she will have the LX100. That is good. I won’t have to sell it and it will still be around. I do like the LX100. SMILE.

Yet Another Sophie’s Choice For I — Panasonic Lumix LX100 or New ZS100.

by Anura Guruge

lumixlz100xs100

Click to access original at “Camera Decision”.

As I have been saying for the last couple of days I am now looking for a replacement for my Sony RX100 II given that it is sold and gone.

I was planning to get a Fuji so that I could standardize on Fuji cameras. BUT that doesn’t seem as easy and practical as I had thought — and not in the budget that I was hoping. Anytime you do any serious evaluation of today’s cameras, using Web resources, you are bound to be told of the competitors. The Panasonic Lumix LX100 kept on coming up. Over the last 24 hours I, as I am wont to do when I come across a camera that looks interesting, did a deep-dive, immersion into finding out about it. Quite the camera. Just two things, other than the smaller than APS-C sensor size, that bothered me: it being a 13MP camera (despite using a 16MP sensor) and the lack of a built-in, pop-up flash. (I am a great exploitor of pop-up flashes). Though the LX100 comes with an external flash that would be an impediment. But the reviews rave about the LX100.

Then on Sunday I came across the newly announced, viz. January 5, 2016, Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100. I had not paid any attention to it since I had by then thought that I was done with buying anymore Panasonic cameras. WOW. ZS100. Basically a smaller version of the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 that has served me so well! But a 1″ sensor and I really wanted to move away from 1″. But it has a pop-up flash and is 20MP. Lens, at zoom, is a bit slow.

To make it worse, and would you believe it, they are EXACTLY the same price! $697.99.

The ZS100 will NOT be available till March 26. Can I wait that long? Seven weeks? Yes, I can, but do I want to.

Wow. This is quite a decision.

Fuji X-T2 story from ‘New Camera’. Click to access.

This is what it will most likely look like.

Indistinguishable from the existing Fuji X-T1. All the new goodies will be inside. That is FINE with me.
fujixt1fff

This is THE attraction. I want knobs for MOST of my settings. Yes, the old-fashioned way.

fujixt1top

It has taken me 15 months and 5 cameras, viz. Canon T3i, Sony a77 Mk II, Panasonic Lumix FZ1000, Canon G1 X & Sony RX100 II, to work it out BUT I now know what I want in my next camera. Deanna will NOT be happy but she is resigned to the fact that I will get another camera ‘soon’. Well the timing of the new Fuji X-T2 will be perfect and it might keep her reasonably happy. I can wait until close to my 2016 birthday to get it and it has become the new tradition that I treat myself to a new camera for my birthday.

So what am I looking for in a camera. BEST image quality I can get at a reasonable price. That also, by default, means that I want a sensor that is at least 1″. Well with the Fuji X-T2 I can get back to APSC size — what I had to begin with with the Canon T3i.

I am committed to mirrorless. To me a mirror is an unnecessary pain. So the Fuji fits the bill perfectly. Also has a good electronic viewfinder with supposedly split-screen image focusing. That would be heaven. I loved split-screen. Peaking is nice BUT split-screen is better.

All I hope is that the X-T2 offers at least 20MP. Yes, I can live with 16MP but that will seems rather passé in 2016.

For the last 6 months I kind of had this feeling that Fuji will be in my life. I don’t think I have ever owned a Fuji camera. So this will be a first.
