Lake Winnipesaukee, NH Ice-Out 2016 — Ice-Out BEFORE Easter Is Not That Unusual.

by Anura Guruge

2016 Lake Winnipesaukee Ice-Out,
declared Friday, March 18, 2016,
77 Days into the Year
(while prior record was 82 days).

See this post for all the statistics.

Some have commented that 2016 Ice-Out is before Easter
— 2016 Easter on Sunday, March 27.

This, however, is not that unusual given that
Easter can occur as late as April 25.

27 instances of Ice-Out before Easter
(counting 2016) AND 4 cases when
Ice-Out was ON Easter.

That means that in the 130 years that we have records for,
Ice-Out happened on/before Easter 24% of the time.

Coincidentally, and very coincidentally, 2016 & 2015 ice-outs both on a Friday.

Most have occurred on Thursdays.

Lake Winnipesaukee, NH: Ice-Out For Last 25 Years. Record = 2010 & 2012.

I have all the dates going back to 1887 — 129 years. Average during that time is April 19 (depending on Leap Years).

But I thought 25 years was a good window.

So BOTH all time records have been in within the last 7 years!

But, please, let us not take this as a definitive sign of Global Warming. Last year and year before we had ice outs close to average.

I am sure that this year, 2016, ice out will set a new record.

Beaujolais Nouveau Day 2012: November 15. Another Great November Tradition.

Anura Guruge, laughing, picture November 16, 2011.

by Anura Guruge

It is always the 3rd Thursday in November — at least that is the day that the bottles of the new pressing are released for sale in France.

The ‘nouveau‘ is French for ‘new‘ and that is what it is all about. The new red wine made from the Gamay grapes from the Beaujolais grape growing (and thus wine producing) region of France.

It is typically produced 6 to 8 weeks after the grapes have been picked. There is usually very little tanin and the wine is invariably ‘fruity’, those the taste and palatability varies from year to year; this, the unexpectedness, being very much a part of the tradition. Most years it is very light and easy on the tongue. You can drink large amounts in a short period of time.

Beaujolais Nouveau Day is a very big deal in the U.K., especially in London. There are ‘friendly’ races, involving trains, planes, automobiles, hot air balloons and helicopters, to see who can get the first bottle to London, on the day. I think they manage to get it into London by 11 a.m. (the one hour time difference with France helping) — and definitely by lunch time. When I worked in London it was obligatory to go to a pub that evening to celebrate the ‘nouveau‘.

Stop Press

I just looked up the NH Liquor Stores to see what their plans were for this year’s ‘nouveau
and discovered that they are having a complimentary [i.e., FREE] wine tasting!
But, undated as you can see, might be OLD. So check.

So we should be all set. Noting close to us. I will keep you posted.
