It was pretty short. At most 20 minutes. BUT it is worrying. MetroCast used to be so rock solid.

Plus I am seeing (on Facebook) and hearing folks from Alton and Barnstead complaining, often, of late, that MetroCast is ‘ALWAYS’ going down.

Strange?

Also strange that this has ONLY started to happen since TDS started its HUGE push around here to promote is 1 Gigabit TDS TV (a.k.a TDS FiberVille) program.

Coincidence?

Is MetroCast checking …?

I actually asked MetroCast! They were taken back that I could be so cynical. SMILE.

This was at the ACS 8th Grade Celebration on Tuesday, June 23, 2015. This baby, with a bunch of family members, was right behind me. Did not make a squeak. As good as can be and as sweet as button. I do NOT know who she is who her parents are. She was just the right distance away for my Canon EFS 55 – 250 mm zoom. So I could not resist. I showed the pictures, of course, on the LCD, to her family. They, of course, liked them. As I said I don’t know who they are. BUT if they want these pictures they are ALL THEIRS. If they contact me I will even gladly givem them the full size (4MB) images that can be printed at over 10″ and will still have very good resolution.

Avast Internet Security Ver. 8: I Am Not Happy And I Have Used Avast For 7 Years (+).

Avast8

Avast8v

Thursday evening Avast!, my antivirus, firewall and ‘internet security’ product of choice, started popping up its annoying, pesky blue boxes saying that I have to update my program (i.e., the software). I get virus updates a few times a day.

I had been at Version 7 for quite a long time and was reasonably happy — though about a year ago there was a nasty hang.

Then without any warning it upgraded me to Version 8 with a new user interface.

Worse still, without giving me a choice, it installed Chrome! That was a no, no. I was not happy. [Since then, in last 7 hours, they have updated their installer and it now asks whether you want Chrome. I guess they must had faced an uproar.]

It took the LONGEST time to install — and this is a i7 4 core machine with 12GB of memory. Most things are fast on this. I guess it took so long because it was installing the latest version of Chrome.

But, after the lengthy install all seemed OK.

This morning Avast Ver. 7 on Devanee’s laptop stopped working! I tried the usual tricks. No luck. We had to go to Bedford so we were in a rush. I powered up this PC to get another copy of Devanee’s Avast license.

When I did that, I got a SCARY blue pop up jump at me saying that Avast wanted to update my Adobe Acrobat Reader. Whiskey, Tango FOX! I don’t want Avast to update anything other than itself! That is intrusive and obnoxious. Avast has gone down a few stripes in my book for that little trick.

Yes, worked out how to turn that DANGEROUS feature off. On the ‘homepage’ icon-based interface (at top above), click on ‘Software Updater’ and then click the STOP button. That disables that stupid feature.

It tries to do too much. I hate that.

Just do what you are supposed to do. I used to be the biggest fan of ‘System Mechanic‘ for years. Then they went down this route. I uninstalled it, on all our PCs, and have never gone back.

We have PAID Avast Internet Security on 5 PCs. Avast, other than a few spectacular screw-ups over the years, has been good. I know that it is good at intercepting bad things.

But this was real annoying. To exacerbate matters, I had to uninstall Avast 7 on Devanee’s PC and re-install it again. So, I was not having a good day with Avast.

The Chrome thing was ironic. I obviously did not have Chrome on this PC. I had been meaning to get it. But, I knew it would take some time. I now have it. I have played with it a few times since Avast installed it! Yes, I plan to migrate to Chrome. I have had it with FireFox too. I am very patient with software that I like, but there is a limit. I have used FireFox for 12 years. Avast for at least 8. But, when I get exasperated, that is it.

If you get Avast 8, make sure to go through each feature, individually and then on the ‘Settings tab’, and disable as much as you can.

Updates: Laconia Multicultural Day September 8 & NH Highland Games At Loon September 21 …, 2012

Japanese Drummers at the Laconia Multicultural Day 2011

I have been visiting their Web site on a regular basis to see if they have a exact schedule indicating when each of the performances will take place. So far, on their ‘Program’ page (and you may have to click on it at least twice to get it to display) they still only have a list of those scheduled to perform this year — sans the times that you can expect to see them. Most likely they will appear in the order listed, with the first performance probably around 11:30 or noon. But, I could be wrong. I know there is the Flag Parade prior to the performances. [I enjoy going to the Web site for another reason. Check out the ‘Home Page‘. Very colorful, graphic and vivid. But, rather than being done as a Web page with HTML (and possibly some scripts) that whole page is but one big image, most likely created in PowerPoint. Nothing wrong with that. I used to teach web site design for SNHU at the post graduate level. This was actually one of the quiz questions I posed to them. Is it possible to create a Web site (or at least some pages) that are but large images. My ‘buddy’ David Stamps who designed this Web site could have gone further. He could have put ‘hot spots’ on that image file so that you could still have links to other pages. I am just glad that I now have an example of an ‘image-as-a-Web page’ that I can show people.]

I have been checking the weather for Laconia for this Saturday. It looks like we might get some rain. The show goes on rain or shine. We have been there in the rain. Given that they have the covered bandstand, one performance tent and another tent for spectators, you can most definitely still enjoy it in the rain. Gets a bit crowded in the tent, but in general it is a great bunch of folks (mainly Democrats) and you can get by. We will probably go even if it rains.

On the other hand the 3-day program for the Highland Games was available today, as a PDF, on their Web site at this link. I printed it out. Last few years we had gone on a Friday or on the Sunday. You get to see the ever so cute sheep dogs and a mixed bag of handlers. This year we can’t do Friday. Teischan can’t miss another day of school, though I doubt anybody could argue the educational benefits of the Games. I am looking at Sunday. The Brigadoons are playing, as ever, at 11:30 am. I have to see the Brigadoons. So that sets me up. 11:30 is a good time for us since it takes us about 3 hours garage-to-performance tent. The program looks light in terms of marquee performers. Yes, Albannach is there. I need to study the schedule more. I do not see a big name or even a Canadian marching band. I will look. Too early yet to check the weather. I have been, at least twice, during hurricanes — and the first time was before they had a Performance Tent.
