I had read about this Auto Lens Cap for the Panasonic Lumix LX100. It appealed to because I do not like to tether lens caps to the camera. I find that distracting. As such I am always looking for my lens cap with cameras. I tried an auto lens cap with my starr-crossed Sony A77  but that did NOT work because there was vignetting at full zoom. NO such problems with the Fotsay. It works brilliantly. As you can see from my pictures the lens opening is well ahead of the lens cover ‘petals’. Yes, it came with a matching silver UV filter. I did NOT use that (though I might reconsider that). I have been using B+W UV lenses and bought one of those. Couldn’t find a 43mm in silver. Hence the contrasting black.

One thing that I have noticed. The lens cap has made 3 drag marks on the B+W lens — highlighted by the black. No biggie. No damage is being done to the real optics.

Notice I do not use the neck strap. I am into wrist straps. On this (heavy) compact I use 2: Prost Leather Hand Grip Strap & a really cool (and it is ‘cool’ to the touch) and comfy leather DSLRKIT Split Leather Wrist/Hand Strap Grip. I slip the Split Leather strap over my wrist and then put my hand in the Prost Grip. Also notice the black connector on the other side. That clips onto a shoulder strap I might sometimes wear. Funnily enough I sometimes grip that connector, for added support. Works well.

As is my practice I also got 2 Wasabi batteries and a charger for this camera. That way I can always have a charger in my camera bag and one, permanently plugged in, at my rather busy and crowded ‘charging station’ (for multiple cameras, multiple Android pads and cell phones). I have had decent luck with Wasabi batteries. I have 4 all together across the two Panasonics.

Yes, of course, we went. We go every year without fail and have been doing so for more than 15 years.

Yes, of course, it was good. It is always good. This year was special because New Hampshire Fall Foliage was ablaze all around the fairground. Yes there is always foliage for Sandwich Fair but this year was a banner year. Lots of vivid reds this year. That added to the normal ‘artist gone mad’ palette you normally get at a fair. I could not believe how lucky we were to get such exceptional foliage for the fair.

Yes, it was cold. We knew that. But, Saturday October 10 was Devanee’s birthday and she likes to go to Sandwich Fair on her birthday if she can — and we try to do so quite often. For the first 90 minutes, and we got there are 11:20 am, it was colder than we had bargained for. Then around 1pm the Sun came out, burned away all the clouds and we had brilliant blue skies and you will see in some of my later pictures. It warmed up considerably, but it was still chilly at times.

It was not as busy as is the norm for the Saturday. I think the weather was a major factor. The Sunday and Monday are warmer. There were still crowds but it was not mobbed like it can sometimes be. Less merchandise tents and even exhibits. Not sure what that was all about. But still, as ever, plenty to do. Prices much the same as last year and if anything the rides required less tickets (I am sure). Rides that I think required 4 or 5 last year only required 3. There were even ones for 2. So that was good.

It was fun. It always is.

This was my first outing with my new Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ1000 (which I had delivered on September 29). I wasn’t sure what to expect. I am still coming to terms with it. I took, as I had done at the Highland Games in September (with my ill-fated Sony a77 mk II), over 900 pictures! So lot to sort out. I will post some in batches as I did with the photographs from the Highland Games. Fairly happy with the camera. It can take some STUNNING pictures. So that is good. So here is a dozen more. More later. I still have over 300 to download to my PC!

A few MORE pictures here.

Sunday, September 20, 2015,
3:30 pm performance at the Governor’s Lodge.

This was towards the end of the Sunday afternoon set — after Devanee’s stint.

While I have no compunction about parading my kids through the Web, I typically DO NOT divulge data about other kids, who I happen to photograph, unless I have explicit permission from their parents. But, I am sure many of you will work out who these two adorable — amazingly photogenic — belong to. To me they are THE NEXT GENERATION.

This was great. Now I know that there is a viable succession plan for my ALL TIME favorite Group. Given that 60% of the members are much younger than I, I am relying on this incarnation of ‘The Brigadoons‘ to regale me, yearly, at Loon, for at least another 15 years. And then … THE NEXT GENERATION.

Enjoy. Cherish. Savor.
This is PRECIOUS.

Sunday, September 20, 2015,
3:30 pm performance at the Governor’s Lodge.

This was “The Brigadoons” third performance that Sunday; their last at the 2015 ‘Games’ and their second that day at the Governor’s Lodge. We had started that day by going to their first performance at the Lodge and was wrapping up the day by going to this one — per my avowed belief that you can never get enough of listening to “The Brigadoons”. The morning gig was brilliant and this was as good. As is their wont it was different — this one more mellow and reflective, in keeping with the mood of the crowd. It had been a truly gorgeous day at Loon and everybody was sated and nicely chilled out. It was a good crowd and the pub above the stage was packed with an appreciative, and often vocal, crowd — and you can hear them on the video on this post.

John “Mr. Scotland” Carmichael, nearly unrecognizable in trousers, joined in, impromptu, for a song, from the back, and that was special. They should collaborate, on stage, more often. That was grand. And I will admit that this gig was very special to us. “The Brigadoons”, very kindly, let Devanee (14), do a song with them! This was a first for her and we will always remember this gig. Thank you, again, “The Brigadoons”.

I took a lot of pictures this time around too. In total I think I ended up with over 400 pictures of the “The Brigadoons” that Sunday. So I am going to share some with you.

I have ONE more extremely special set of pictures left. That was of “The Brigadoons — The Next Generation“. I will post those soon.

So for now, sit back, relax and enjoy these pictures.

Thank YOU “The Brigadoons”.

So that is 4 sets of pictures I have posted of “The Doons” from Loon. People might start getting the impression that I kind of like “The Doons”.

P.S., Danny told me that I would not be able to capture 5 pictures of him smiling. I think I have. SMILE

All the pictures taken with my new — and now sadly returned — Sony a77 Mk II. These pictures were among the 989 that disappeared from the card (fortunately, 3 days AFTER I had downloaded the images. That was what was scary and rattled me no end. I could have so easily lost these pictures. That is why I am getting a non-Sony camera.

Sunday, September 20, 2015, 11:45 am performance at the Governor’s Lodge.

John Carmichael, from Giffnock, Glasgow (Scotland), by any measure is indeed the ‘Real McCoy’. He is the epitome of a Scot — a traditional one at that. His authentic Scottish tunes and songs, not to mention his delightful stories, transports you back, magically, to the Banks of Lock Lomond in Scotland. With John you can feel the mist rising from the Loch. It is John Carmichael and ‘The Brigadoons‘ that make sure that the NH Scottish Highland Games lives up to its name.

I have always relished listening to and watching John. He has so much talent and personality. A really, really nice guy too (but, in my experience, that is true with most people from Glasgow). Such a delight and what an entertainer. Devanee and I sat and savored his entire set on Sunday morning and we are so glad we did so. He is magic.

I am so glad that I managed to get these pictures so that YOU can get a feel of this exceptional gentleman. Enjoy.

Sunday, September 20, 2015, 3:30 pm performance at the Governor’s Lodge.

This was not my doing though I was chuffed to bits. Denis Carr (in the black shirt) and Paddy Kelly (in the blue shirt) made this happen and we thank them (again) along with Ashley MacLeod, Danny Leroux (playing bass at the end in a black shirt) and Reg Portieous (in green) who were also extremely supportive. Thank YOU “The Brigadoons“.

Though she has been singing chorale for ‘Clearlakes Chorale’ for four years and Broadway chorus for the ‘Greatwaters Festive Chorus’ for two, this was Devanee’s (15 next month) first time in front of a mike and ‘up front’. Paddy and Denis, of course, helped her quite a bit — and you can see pictures below of Paddy patiently taking her through her ‘steps’ prior to the concert. In reality they started coaxing and coaching her on Friday night. Yes, we met with them socially, for the first time, that night. That is when the conversation turned to her doing a song with them.

That she sang with them is wholly appropriate. She has known “The Brigadoons” since September 2003, when she was two. That was her first ‘Games’ and she sat with me, in the front row of the ‘Performance Tent’, in her diapers — and she danced. After the show I took her over and introduced her to Jackie Smith. We might have seen ‘The Doons’ multiple times that weekend. In those days, prior to school, we used to go for the whole 3 days. So she has seen them for 11 years — we having missed two games in that time. She knows that “The Brigadoons” are my favorite, by far, performance at the Games and is willing to follow suit — just as she has done with my preference for British sports cars. She knows which way her bread should be buttered.

Over the last few years I have got to know Denis and Paddy outside of the Games. That has been an honor and privilege. That is how Friday evening came to be and Devanee singing with them followed, though that was never ‘on the agenda’ to begin with. We are all so glad and thankful. It was Paddy and Denis who worked out that the ‘River is wide’ would be a good song for her to join in. She listened to it on YouTube on Saturday. So that is the story. “The Brigadoons” will now be even more special to her and that makes me happy.

P.S. As you will hear on the YouTube video Devanee got a lot of support from the crowd in the pub that overlooks the stage at the Governor’s Lodge. That was cool.

I took 989 pictures on Sunday at the ‘Games’ and I think this is my favorite. Love the expression on Denis’ face. Such a nice person. Salt of the Earth. We are so lucky.

Personal coaching, a few minutes ahead of concert start, by maestro (and good friend) Paddy Kelly.

A sister, Teischan (9), incredulous!

A photomontage of Devanee getting ready to sing (with Paddy Kelly’s help) and her actual performance.
51 photos made into a video and set to an instrumental of the ‘River is wide’.

You should definitely watch.

Sunday, September 20, 2015, NH Highland Games at Loon.

We are HUGE fans of the ‘Chillis’. We have seen them, in prior years at Loon, and at the fabulous (free) concert they did in Concord, NH, in February 2014. Great group. Very personable. Makes me ultra-proud that they are British and, moreover, from Glasgow. Glasgow is special to me. I use to go up to Greenock to celebrate Hogmanay. My friend Ian W.F. Williams was a pillar of Glasgow society and I have spoken, a number of times, at the ‘National Conference Centre’ in Glasgow — once doing a keynote presentation in front of 870 people.

The ‘Chillis’, as ever, did GREAT at the Games. Love their dynamic energy. So reminiscent of the ‘Seven Nations‘ — and I am no longer sure as to who will be more proud of that comparison, since the ‘Chillis’ are now quite famous in their own right — as is but right.

Just a few closeups to get us started. I have close to 100 pictures of THEM from Loon. So I will do a few batches. Enjoy.

Thank YOU “The Red Hot Chilli Pipers”. You Were Great.

I plan to do at least 2 more photo sets of the ‘Chillis’.

Two things, please. Your sound engineer, on Sunday, BUTCHERED your sound! The sound was distorted and clipped. Not good. You guys were good enough to get away with it. But ditch this ‘engineer’ and get another one or use ‘Boston Sound Works’. How can I say this delicately. The ‘local’ (NY) vocal ‘talent’ wasn’t much of a catch on the stage. I am SURE she is very good, but not as a vocalist for YOU. So …. You guys can do better than that ON STAGE! SMILE. Grin. Come on. I remember the talent in Glasgow, if not Scotland. Keep it Scotish.

Sunday, September 20, 2015, 10:30 am performance at the Governor’s Lodge.

The Brigadoons” it would appear are pathologically incapable of ever doing a sub-par performance (notwithstanding any or all indulgence in ‘tea bags’). As soon as Denis Carr, taps his foot, and hits a note, they are, as ever, off and running, happy to entertain and glad you are there. I worked out, over the weekend, that I have seen them at least 32 times, over a span of 17 years, and 15 ‘Games‘ at Loon. And as I recall I have loved every performance and can’t wait for the next. But sometimes when the stars are all perfectly aligned and Denis has had his tea some performances tend to be more foot-tapping and closer-to-the-heart than others. And that was the case with this Sunday morning gig. You would believe that they had done three performances the day before, including one in the evening. They knew it was a good one too. As Denis loves to say he likes to keep the group guessing as to what he is doing next. Spontaneity, as such, has become their stock-in-trade. That is grand. It is always fresh and as such lively.

I have to confess I took over 440 pictures of the ‘Doons’ on Sunday! The joys of digital cameras and the near inexhaustible space on a 64 GB memory card. So I am going to TRY and share some of these pictures with you in batches — thematically. OK?

Thank YOU “The Brigadoons” for a real dandy set.

I plan to do at least 3 more photo sets.

TeaserDevanee (14), our soprano, sang with “The Brigadoons” during their 3:30pm set. And YES, I do have pictures and even a video. Did you think we would let that pass without documenting it? That is Devanee, next to Teischan (9) [in glasses], with the green, St. Patrick, hair.

This was away from the “Highland Games” per se and as such I will NOT SAY anything other than this.

Just enjoy the pictures. Always good to see pictures of them. I wish I could have done them, especially Danny Leroux, more justice. But the new Sony a77 mk II still confounds me on a regular basis EVEN if I use a fully automated mode!
