There May Never Be A Sony a7 III; the a9 May Be The Upgrade Path!

I can see the ‘Munda Logic‘ in this.

IF you want to stick with 24MP resolution, as I do, then upgrade to the a9 — pay the HUGE price difference even if you do not ever need 20fps shooting capability or two card slots.

IF you need more resolution go with the newly announced Sony a7R III.

There is some rationale to this.

What I was hoping was an a7 III with the Sony a7 body, Sony a6500 sensor and maybe some firmware from the a9.

The Newly Announced Sony a7R III Has No Appeal To I.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. From “DPReview.com” — where else?

I love my fullframe Sony a7 II and plan to keep it forever (which in my case typically means ‘over 10 months’), but for my love and interests in the a7 family does not extend BEYOND the a7!

The a7R — the HIGH RESOLUTION monster — would be totally useless to me. I rarely print images. 99.9% of the pictures I take are for Web consumption — mainly here — and for that I have to DOWNSAMPLE anyway by a factor of at least 4!

That is why I will be hesitant to think about anything beyond my current 24MP — though I have a horrible feeling I might have to confront that somewhere down the road.

So 42MP is way outside my scope of interest.

The Sony a9, as I said before, rather than being a case of ‘sour grapes’, is also WAY more than I would ever need. I RARELY use continuous drive! Just don’t like it. I like to TRY and time my pictures. That is so much more satisfying. Continuous drive to I, is like post processing — something I detest. You take the pictures and then go back and see which ones came out ‘OK’. Not my cup of tea.

But, NOT a bad thing. I will stick to my a7 II and wait to see what the a7 III might promise.

Sony a9 Is Announced And The Rumors Were Right — The $4,500 Is An ‘Hail Mary’!

by Anura Guruge

So it is cheaper than what was rumored (i.e., $6,000) BUT that is no consolation.

The $4,500 (U.S.) just for the body puts this well into the ‘Professional Only’ category.

Yes, I could get one IF I wanted BUT I can’t justify that price to MYSELF let alone anyone else — and it is the fact that I can’t justify it to myself that matters.

It is funny but I rarely use multiple-shot shutter bursts! Just one of my many foibles. I wouldn’t know what to do with 20fps.

So, looks like I will be getting a Sony a7II soon. {SMILE}

If this is indeed true it will be a tragedy!

YIKES & Wow. Talk about a master hijack. Appears that this has happened before — albeit in Canada.

This could definitely impact the announcement.

Stay tuned. I am.

Sony’s Rebates On The Popular Alpha Mirrorless Cameras Continue Past April 1, 2017.

by Anura Guruge

The rebates, which were in the $200 — $300 range, were supposed to expire this last weekend — and that was NO April Fool’s prank.

But that has no happened as yet. If anything the likes of B&H are discounting even deeper.

There is a BIG Sony announcement scheduled for April 23, 2017 and my druthers is that Sony will keep the rebates going till past that. Depending on what is announced we could maybe even see further discounts on selected models, e.g. Sony a7 II.

So, as ever, a timely heads up.

Sony’s $200 – $300 Rebates On Most Cameras To END This Saturday, April 1, 2017?

by Anura Guruge

I, personally, am NOT too worried about this.

Yes, I do plan to buy a Sony camera in the near future BUT I am not going to rush headlong and get one before Saturday.

Having waited THIS LONG and I am going to wait till April 23rd to see what Sony announces.

In the current market Sony has to keep prices competitive. So IF these rebates end, Sony will have to come up with new ones.

So, do NOT PANIC.

The Supposed $6,000 Price Tag For The Rumored Sony a9 Full Frame Is BEYOND Crazy!

by Anura Guruge

IF it is priced at anything above $2,700 (US) it will just be confirmation that Sony executives just like their counterparts at the other Japanese digital camera manufacturers are ingesting drugs that are addling their brains.

It is a 20MP camera.

To prices it way above the a7S II or the new a99 II would mean that Sony is putting a $2,000 — $3,000 price on the NEW Auto Focus (AF).

That will be a hard-sell.

If it is priced at $6,000 the Sony a7 II will be one heck of a bargain.

Will The Rumored Sony a9 Full Frame Be Announced At Video-Oriented NAB Show On April 23, 2017?

by Anura Guruge

From the ‘New Camera’, March 24, 2017. Click image to access the original.

Yes, it is possible.

Sony hasn’t, as yet, announced ANYTHING in 2017.

That is unusual to go this long into a year without something from Sony.

Yes, this is very much a broadcasting-centric show; hence the emphasis is on video, film, virtual reality, mobile etc.

However, ANY camera Sony now announces will indeed have some impressive video capabilities. So there is that.

April 23 is just under a month away.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I do hope they make THE announcement. I really do want to go ahead and order a camera

The Rumored Sony a9 MIGHT Be Perfect For My Needs.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here.

The Sony a9 rumors have cropped up again.

Not clear whether this a9 is the same as the much anticipated Sony a7 III or indeed a very different camera.

One thing seems to be coalescing — i.e., that it is going to be a ‘low resolution’, i.e., 20 MP camera.

I find that intriguing.

The only way that makes sense to me is IF it like the 12 MP Sony a7S (II) is to have outstanding low-light performance.

The rumors don’t mention that but talk about the ‘FASTEST AF, EVER‘!

This might also have to do with low-light since light plays such a big role in AF.

So the a9 might in essence be an updated a7S II with a 20MP sensor.

24 MP, which I now have, with my Sony a6000 is overkill for my needs. I don’t really want to go beyond that, e.g., 42 MP. That would just be too cumbersome for my needs.

20 MP, with OUTSTANDING low light performance and fast AF would be GREAT for my needs.

So, I am all ears.

I have YET to get the Sony a6500 I was supposed to get last year!

Nothing to do with funds, all to do with TIME.

I was in the midst of writing yet ANOTHER book, my 27th. I didn’t want to get a new camera until that book was done. Didn’t want to be distracted.

That book is done and is currently being proofed.

So, I am ready to buy my ‘new/next’ camera.

But, I am NO LONGER sure I want the a6500!

I am going Sony Full Frame.

Come on. I am entitled. My bucket list.

I have never owned a digital full frame and I do not want to die without having played around with one! Simple as that.

So I am thinking Sony a7 II rather than Sony a6500.

But, I don’t want to order an a7 II if a a7 III or 20MP a9 is just down the road.

So, that is my dilema.

Not a bad one. I still have the a6000 and Nikon P900. So it isn’t as if I don’t have a camera,

A nice problem to have.
