The start of what is a rambling letter with an arduous attempt to justify what he is doing.

The key paragraph —
the one that grants the ‘right’ to all priests, indefinitely.

This published the day before Valentine’s Day 2016 is NOT an April Fool’s prank by a U.K. Tabloid.

This is indeed a proposed law in Kentucky. It is meant to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek in that it is trying to highlight how some of the new anti-abortion laws impinge on the liberties of the subject. Suffice to say that this law has not been thoroughly thought out and as such is flawed. It is akin to the kind of stuff that a pope would write — it talks about wives and partners interchangeably BUT without touching upon gay couples, causal girlfriends, one-night-stands etc.

My concern is that some New Hampshire lawmakers might think that this might be good to have in New Hampshire too — now that we are trying to legalize prostitution (independent of gender) but criminalize the exposure of the (poor) female nipple.

This is HUGE.

This is even bigger than if he issued an edict accepting gay marriage (something he will never do).

It is on a par with if he permitted female Catholic priests. The only thing that could be BIGGER is if he totally abolished all restrictions, sans caveat, on birth control and abortion.

Yes, it is THAT BIG!

The date when Easter Sunday will be celebrated is something that tore the Church apart — Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter her a different ‘formula’ based on a different calendar. Agreeing on a common date for Easter as been a hitherto irreconcilable difference for over 700 years. Yes, 700 years. We are talking a big deal here.

Yes, agreeing on a common date for Easter would go a long way towards healing the schism between West and East Christianity — Western and the Orthodox.

Trying to work out the date for Easter goes back to the 2nd century. This is big potatoes. The calendar that we now use, the Gregorian Calendar, named after Pope Gregory XIII (#227) [1572 – 1585], came to be because the Church did not like Easter coming around when there was still snow on the ground in Europe. Easter was meant to fall in Spring.

Agreeing on a date for Easter across all Christian geographies in the 2nd century was a pivotal factor that led to the establishment of the Papacy! Prior to that all Bishops had equal standing including the Bishop of Rome (now the Pope). But in the 2nd century, given Rome’s historic standing as the epicenter of the Roman empire other Bishops, including those from the East, approached him to arbitrate the Easter date issue. Bishops of Rome grasped on that to say that this gave them primacy. Easter was discussed and mandated upon at the very first Ecumenical Council, that of Nicaea in 325. We even had a major controversy with a lovely sounding name Quartodecimanism (Latin for the 14th day).

So IF the pope can get ALL Christians, East & West, to standardize on a common date for Easter Sunday it would be HUGE.

It will make this pope a legend in history. He will surpass John XXIII (#262), John Paul II (#265), Pius X (#258).

This is HUGE.

But it will all depend on what the reconciliation is.

IF the Orthodox agree to adopt the Western date without any caveats it would be HUGE.

There will be dancing on the streets.

There will be calls to Saint the Pope even as he is alive.

But if any concessions are given to the Orthodox all hell will break lose.

Protestants will take umbrage to the Pope messing with THEIR Easter.

Even Catholics would balk.

So heads up. This makes the Pope’s climate control encyclical look trivial.

While, of course, it will make some extremely happy, this, as you can easily imagine, will NOT sit well with conservative U.S. Catholics. This is a firm slap in the face to the Church’s supposed sanctity of human life. This pope is again reveling in being a maverick for the sake of being a maverick.

It also highlights the arbitrariness of Catholic sin. Suddenly, for a year, it is no longer a sin. What rank nonsense is this?

Check this to see how some cardinals are already rebutting the ol’ pope.

As a profession (and rather successful) ‘Pope Watcher‘ I knew this was going to happen.

Kind of in the same league as Francis and his gold pallium pins — when he keeps on harping on about charity.

The problem, that so many,
especially the clowns in the media,

haven’t worked out is that this Pope is CONSERVATIVE!
He had to be, to be created a cardinal by John Paul II (#265).
Under John Paul II & Benedict XVI (#266)
prospective cardinals

had to sign an OATH confirming that they are
bona fide traditionalists.

He is not going to change the Catholic wide-stance on gay folks, abortion, contraception, women priest, clerical celibacy etc. etc. He just likes to talk a good game. BIG DIFFERENCE.

This is why I did this post for you. Pope’s talk about inclusiveness does NOT change Catholic doctrine.

The other problem, and I have written about that … is that this pope is very careless, intentionally or otherwise, in what he says. He basically blurts out stuff without thinking about what he is saying. This is not good.

wolfinsheepfurDuring the last 4 months I have been doing a crazy amount of research on Pope John XXIII (#262) since I am writing a book on him. Superficially there are a lot of similarities between Francis and John XXIII. But, John NEVER said anything that he did NOT mean 100%. That is key. John was a very intriguing person. Though of dirt-poor, farming peasant stock, he was extraordinarily astute and clever — in a very street-smart way. He rarely, if ever, put a foot wrong and I have yet to really see an example of ‘foot in mouth’. Not so with Francis. He is a loose cannon.

His ‘horror’ at same sex adoption is going to rattle the LGBT community — as it should. They misread him.

This is going to be an ongoing problem.

This pope has created false expectations
— intentionally, or otherwise.

It will be an interesting 2014.

Happy New Year.
