Instant Karma: World’s First Porsche Fails To Sell At Auction Because Of Bad English?

by Anura Guruge

Classic.

A German car and a Dutch auctioneer. I know the Dutch have a long, storied history when it comes to auctioneering BUT how do you end up with one that even his OWN PEOPLE can’t understand.

This was a multi-million dollar question. Nobody at Sotheby’s was paying attention? This is crazy.

But, I class it as ‘Instant Karma‘. German cars give you that. Trust me on this.

Gene Amdhal
(16 November 1922 – 10 November 2015)

obituary post.

1984 video of Gene Amdahl.

I had hoped to find quite a few videos on YouTube that I would be able to share with you. This was the only one I managed to locate so far.

Good video. IF you have never met the great man this video will give you a very good feel as to his personality. As you will hear he was very soft spoken with a noticeable Scandinavian accent though he was born in South Dakota. He was also a very gentle man albeit with an iron resolve which you could sometimes clearly see in his eyes. Always very deliberate and thoughtful in what he says.

1984. Watch the video. He got the PC architecture part 100% right! Wow.

Now listen to Lore Harp at the 3:13 mark. Listen to what she has to say about PC CLONE vendors. Wow, talking about getting something WRONG. Great contrast here. Gene gets it right and she is dead wrong. Funny.

I, as you can see, as is my wont, is trying to pull together as much media of Gene in one place for future reference. IF you have any photos or videos of Gene that you would like to SHARE please let me know. I will work with you. Thank you.

I found this very well rendered painting, of quite the alluring model, a few weekends ago, at the incredible ‘Swap Shop’ at our Alton (NH) dump.

We always check out the ‘Swap Shop’ (quite often even dropping off stuff to swap) since you never know what ‘treasures’ you may find. I have, over the years, picked up some great books at the dump.

This pictures was inside of a sparsely used, very large, artist’s drawing pad. Most of the pages were blank, but this beauty was in there, still attached to the spiral binding. I had picked up the pad because no paper goes a waste in this house — especially with Teischan around. She is a prolific user of paper for drawing and for her many other craft-related pursuits. Having this picture inside was a bonus.

Kind of feel sad and bad about it. Would love to know WHO painted it. Would love to give it back to them? Was the person forced to get rid of the image? Pity. Was that a real model or was it painted from a picture. I am curious.

IF you know who painted it or you know the subject please contact me. I will gladly relinquish the picture.

But till then ENJOY. “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”. That was the very first English that I had to memorize, as part of my elocution lessons, when I was about 7 or 8, growing up in Ceylon in the 1960s. Given how badly I speak, which such a pronounced oriental accent, would you have realized that they spent good money, for years, making me attend weekly, sometimes bi-weekly (as in twice a week) elocution lessons. The only good thing was that all my elocution teachers were fairly good looking, young, Sinhalese ladies (if not ‘girls’).

P.S., Though I was NOT taught this in Ceylon I have later found that “A thing of beauty is a joy forever” is the first line of a poem, ‘Endymion’, published by famed John Keats, in 1818. The phrase appeared without attribution as the end note of the English text book that my then elocution teacher used. I guess she must have liked it because she asked me to memorize it. I wish I could remember what she looked like. Was she a beauty that would be a joy forever. I could not, alas, tell you.

This was BRILLIANT. Bravo. Made my day. I had, since 1971, always wanted to be able to say it BUT I can’t even come close.

I went and checked him, i.e., Liam Dutton, out. Quite the guy. We is Welsh — born in Cardiff (though he doesn’t have the classic Welsh look of yore — BUT this is the new, melting pot UK).

I, given that I spent three of my most formative and fun years in Wales, in Swansea, consider myself somewhat Welsh. If nothing else, as those that know appreciate, cut-to-the-chase, the underlying cadence of my (hard to understand) accent is Welsh! Fancy that.

In September 1971, when I started at Swansea University, I was given a tour and orientation by a Welsh student. All the signs were in both English and Welsh and he took delight in reading them out to us. I kind of thought it would be neat to learn some Welsh while I was there. Well that never happened. I was busy with other things. SMILE. But there was a time, after much tutoring from locals, when I could properly pronounce ‘Llanelli‘ like a native

This is great. Thanks Liam. You are the guy.

P.S., This was not live. They prerecorded it just to be on the safe side BUT it is claimed that he nailed it on the very first take. I am so proud of him.

Iechyd da!

I like most Brits having nothing but undisguised admiration, respect and gratitude for the Gurkhas — who for so long have fought beside us.

I mentioned them in this post about British Commonwealth Troops in WW I (from which the Poppy Tradition arises) since they were such an integral force in that war — as in so many other wars.

So today I went in search of Gurkhas with Poppies pictures.
I lucked out. I am so happy.

From the ‘NepaliSamajUK.com’ photo gallery. Click to access. They have LOADS more pictures.

That this was Remembrance Day for ex-Gurkhas at Llanelli, Wales just made my day! Many don’t appreciate it, but I am Welsh. My underlying accent is not from Ceylon, it is a Ceylon accent modulated by Welsh. I spent 3 of my most riotous years of my life in Swansea, Wales. Llanelli wasn’t far away. I have been to Llanelli, visited the Rugby club and even more importantly was able to say ‘Llanelli’ correctly, saying like a true Welshman.

So this great, but I always associate Llanelli with greatness — not just on the rugby field.
