Serious, But Non-Fatal, Bicycle Accident On ‘Acadia National Park’ Loop Road, November 2, 2017.

Not much details as to how, or where, the accident took place. Sounds like he rear-ended a car, BUT was the car parked on the Loop Road (which is not unusual) or did it brake suddenly. Either way he was lucky and he knows it. Shame.

Interesting that folks are still out on the Park ‘this late’. I am sure it is lovely. I wish I could go up there. Miss it.

So, another non-fatal accident.

Click to ENLARGE. Though many of you know “Bass Harbor” in terms of its iconic lighthouse, the Harbor itself is set back — and in this case the accident was on the ‘Bernard’ side. Created by Anura Guruge.

The New York Couple had been to dinner at “Thurston’s” at Bernard.

We eat at “Thurston’s” too and had done so on September 3, 2017
— just 3-weeks earlier.

Pictures of “Thurston’s” and Bernard Harbor.

No fatalities and not that serious. Driving into a harbor … You would expect that from a New York driver.

He was looking for Route 102. The roads around Bernard are narrow and if there was a fog, at night, it could be tricky.

Elderly Pedestrian Killed Just Outside ‘Acadia National Park’, September 12, 2017 — “Chart Room Restaurant” Parking Lot.

As far as I know, and as far as I can tell, this is the only fatal accident anywhere close to Acadia National Park in 2017 — so far. The prior major accident, on July 11, 2017, was non-fatal. Prior to that was the motorcycle crash, on Cadillac Mountain, September 4, 2016.

To be fair this was NOT inside the Park but it is as close to the Park as you can get without actually being inside. As you can see in the report, Park Rangers were at the accident to handle traffic.

Well known landmark. Hard to miss. Always crowded.

We were, of course, at Acadia over the Labor Day Weekend, this year — as we have since 2013. Traffic was crazy a couple of times BUT no accidents as far as I heard.

Where the accident happened, 0.5 miles south of the entrance to Cadillac Mountain Road. Van was heading northbound towards Bar Harbor.

We had been there just 10-days earlier — in a 7-seater van, in our case a Nissan Quest as opposed to a Honda Odyssey.

I feel for them. Great testimonial Honda that they plunged 30′ feet down an embankment and only the 60-old driver suffered any injuries and even those were slight. Good job they didn’t hurt or kill anyone. Falling asleep at the wheel — just after noon! Possible that they got up early that morning to drive up from Boxborough, Mass., and that he was tired. Not good.

Train Accident In Sri Lanka From 2011: 18 Year Old Girl Hit By Train Survives! Pretty Amazing.

by Anura Guruge

I had posted this in my “Fun & Trivia With Anura Guruge” blog
in 2011. But, that blog does not get many hits or my attention.
So I am reposting it here since it is pretty amazing and
is related to the other train accident post from a few days ago.

They continue to have this type of accident in Sri Lanka, in many instances the outcome not being as good as in this case. As far as I can remember we have had people getting hit by trains — largely because people have used rail tracks as public roads. In the 1960s when I was growing up there we had folklore about getting run over by trains — the worst fear being that of getting one of your feet trapped in a junction point (‘switch’) and then being helplessly trapped as a train approached! People would actually talk about the best strategies for such scenarios — I kid you not. It was considered best if your free leg was outside of the rails, because you could then really lean over and just lose the bottom part of your leg. We really used to talk about such things. Yes, we also played chicken with trains — something I continued to do until I was about 16, even once doing it in India.

It still baffles me how these people don’t FEEL the train coming behind them — even if they don’t hear it. These lumbering trains, on not that well laid tracks, create one heck of a lot of ground vibration. Well, you have to watch the video:

Another Gruesome Train Accident In Sri Lanka — Appears To Be A Suicide.

by Anura Guruge

Saw it on Facebook.

It was all in Sinhalese and all I could work out is that they think it is a suicide. If not a very strange accident.

Shame. Very gruesome pictures. Never seen anything like this!

The van that Braxton came in — to Kittery, Maine, just north of Portsmouth, NH.

Different outfits BUT we got Braxton (who we thought was a Beagle but has proved to be a Harrier) from a rescue van, in Kittery, Maine — just north of Portsmouth, N.H.

Yes, as far as we can tell, there are numerous such vans making the trek north, with rescue animals from the south, weekly. Yes, it is ‘big’ business — though it is worthwhile. We would not have got Braxton IF not for a rescue service like that.

The accident would have been ADDED trauma for the animals, especially the dogs. It took Braxton a YEAR to recover from being a rescue dog who had spent much of his life in a crate — and he, like all our dogs, was pampered and spoilt once we got our hands on him. So I feel bad for these animals. Shame.

Kind of upset me.

Quite A Weekend For Aston Martin. I Was Just Visiting Them To Oggle The New ‘Rapide S’.

>> The Aston Martin ‘Ad’ … — Mar. 24, 2013.

This weekend’s ‘Market Watch‘ had a rave article about the Aston Martin ‘Rapide S’. Called it a beauty. I always find it pleasing (and encouraging) when U.S. media appreciates the beauty of our cars — rather than just our Royals and film stars.

I get regular e-mails from Bentley — because about 12 years ago I wrote a case study on them. Aston Martin, knowing that I am so far from their target demographics as the Earth is from the Oort cloud, quite rightly keeps me in the dark. But I wanted to see more of this beauty because I really do like Aston’s though I have never even sat in one.

I went and was greeted by this black screen. Wow. That was news to me. I don’t follow the Le Mans. Not sure if I ever did though I used to follow F-1. I was impressed. That showed class, though I think they could have done it better. The text is so small. Plus, they didn’t actually give you a way to enter the site after that! That is not good. I had to get in via a Google link.

They still have the black screen today at 'astonmartin.com'.

Here is one video from YouTube of the crash. Lots more. Very strange.

Shame about Allan Simonsen, 34. Always unsettling to hear of race car drivers driving. Very strange accident.  He went off the track on his own. Mechanical failure? Busted strut? Did he have a medical condition. Don’t know.

But Aston Martin, as it says TODAY, on the black screen, came in 3rd. Well, that isn’t good. If you don’t win Le Mans … just don’t say anything and try again next year.

And now for this absolutely, near perfect beauty. Why somebody would buy a German car IF they could afford this is always mystery to me (especially if you are Jewish, and here I am referring to a Jewish friend of mine, who was very committed to the ‘Jewish’ cause, BUT would boast that he had $72,000 of German cars sitting on his driveway and this was in 1992).

It is permissible to drool. Click to ENLARGE.

Wikipedia has an article about it.

It is popular in Russia and they were planning to feature it at the Sochi Winter Olympics next year. Then there was an accident, caught on video, that killed one person and injured another. [Here is a link to the story and video.]

It was this story that piqued my interest, though I think I might have heard about it before. It looks like a load of fun, though I think I am too old. I can just see it at Gunstock. You can use it on grass or on water. Yes, my mind is racing.
