I At Last Have My GoTo ‘ActiFace’ Watch Face On My ‘Garmin’ ‘Venu 2’ & It Feels Good.

by Anura Guruge

‘ActiFace’ on my Garmin Venu 2.

‘ActiFace’ at least for now has usurped ‘Logos 3’.

ActiFace on my ‘Enduro’ & ‘Fenix 6’ with Venu 2 with a default watch face.

‘ActiFace’ has been my default Garmin watch face since 2017. I have used it, with pleasure, on all my Garmins. I missed not having it on my ‘new’ Venu 2. I even e-mailed the developer. Well, today it was available. I downloaded it at once. As I knew it would, it looks great with the BRIGHT, AMOLED display.

But, I am faced with a dilemma. I am kind of quite partial to the new Logos 3 ALSO & it, as you can see above, gives me MORE data while being super-readable & easy on the eye. So! I don’t know.

I am sure I am on solid ground here. I can’t be 100% sure BUT I don’t think a wife, irrespective of her wealth or access to funds, will buy you this. She will just know, innately, that it is dumb.

Plus, do NOT excuse me of semism — i.e., a father of three daughters (one of who is a big Garmin fan). The MARQ is not for ladies. It is big and heavy. There is NO MARQ S. It is unashamedly a man’s watch.

So, what do you think.

I did the sums. You are paying $450 for the wooden box and the limited-edition exclusivity.

The five MARQ watches — and I priced them out for you — are: Driver ($2,500), Aviator ($1,950), Captain ($1,850), Adventurer (which used to be the Expedition) ($1,750) & Athlete ($1,500). So, the five watches come to $9,550.

What is NOT included is the Commander ($1,950).

What do YOU think.

I had to smile. Yes, $10,000 is NOT much for 5 watches. Plenty of folks that can afford this without thinking twice. In a world where a person will pay $125,000 for a banana duct taped to a wall, this is quite a BUY!

I have three Garmins right now: two Fenix 6s and a Venu. So, I am NOT in a position to disparage 5 Garmins — though five maybe is overkill.

Why do I have three. Well, I needed TWO — one as a hot backup if one failed. Didn’t want to go even a day without recording my data. The Venu was a bonus — because I like AMOLED screens.

But, 5 MARQs. That would get old pretty quickly I would think.

I am a long-term Garmin shareholder. So, I do care how Garmin spends MY money! Not too thrilled about this. But, Garmin is a Billion dollar company and this is but bagatale.

A friend of mine, another HUGE Garmin fan, asked whether Garmin will really sell any of these Sets. I think they will. In the scheme of things, on a global basis, 100 sets isn’t much. I wouldn’t be surprised if they sell them all.

SMILE.

Enjoy.

Merry Christmas.

Hope your girlfriend buys you one. Please send pictures. All the best.

‘Digital Boost’ — Finally A Decent Looking, Functional ‘Digital’ Watch Face From Garmin With A ‘Seconds’ Field.

If you have NOT noticed Garmin tends to focus on analog watch faces. To I that is so, so, so passé. Though I am old enough to have grown up with ONLY analog watches I no longer see any merit or joy in analog — ANYTHING (other than maybe vinyl records). I like to glance at my watch and see the time as it is, i.e., in DIGITAL.

I also like to see SECONDS. Not that it matters that much, but it seems a waste not to be able to see it because there times when it is nice to see time ticking away without having to activate a timer.

Finally with ‘Digital Boost‘ Garmin has given me a watch face that I like and will use!

Prior to this I always used ‘ActiFace‘ (below). No guarantee that I will not be going back to ‘ActiFace’ gives me EVERYTHING I want. I love ‘ActiFace’. But, I also would like a change.

Yes, ‘Digital Boost’ should, ideally, offer more customization. I, for one, do NOT need a ‘Move’ bar. It would be nice to plug-in sunrise/sunset somewhere.

But, this is a start. Wow. Thanks Garmin.

‘ActiFace’ as I use it — customized.

I had it for 5.6-months. When I got the MARQ I was so happy and excited and I thought I would keep it forever — and I did have a Rolex that I kept for 22-years before giving it to my son.

The MARQ software had issues. Some of it probably because I insisted on using my preferred (customized) ‘ActiFace‘ watch face rather than one supplied by Garmin. But, last night was the last straw. All of the MARQ conniption appear to happen AFTER I finish a walk — whether as a GPS activity or just walking 1,000+ steps without invoking ‘walk’. Well, last night, after my 11pm walk, the bloody thing beeped and squawked and the next thing I knew it appeared to be LOCKED. Finally worked out that it had gone into ‘battery saving mode’! Ah! I had charged it, 100%, 11-hours earlier. Battery was down to 14% and I had the Pulse OX off. Well, I wasted 30-minutes getting things back to normal and I then had to charge it again.

That was IT. I had enough.

Prior to that, at least once a week, after one of my walks I would lose ActiFace. It would take 15-minutes to get it back. There never was one guaranteed solution. Required me trying this that and the other.

Yes, IF I also did NOT have a Fenix 6 Sapphire I would not have known any better …

But, to be fair, there was a reason I had got a Fenix 6. The MARQ never felt robust. I had vision of it dying — totally, as had two Vivoactive 3s. This time around I did not want to go for 4-days without a Garmin to track my activities. So, I had decided that I am always going to have two Garmins around.

The Fenix 6 is head-and-shoulders better than the MARQ Explorer (now called the ‘Adventurer’). The software is more reliable and the display is much, much, much, much better.

Hence, why I am getting another Fenix 6. This one in Titanium. NO, I will not be wearing the orange band. Instead I will use a $22 leather band from Amazon. They look real nice on the Fenix 6.

Well, I will keep you posted.

I Have, Not Surprisingly, Ended Up With ‘ActiFace’ Watch Face On My Garmin ‘MARQ Expedition’.

Garmin MARQ Expedition with Crystal Watch Face Anura Guruge

The ‘Crystal’ watch face on my MARQ.

I had been using ‘ActiFace‘ on my Garmin Fenix 5 & Fenix 5 Plus for exactly one-year before I upgraded to the MARQ Expedition.

I had got quite attached to ActiFace once I got it customized exactly the way I wanted it. I had stumbled upon ActiFace accidently. I had been a ‘GearMin‘ fan. But, I discovered that GearMin did not work flawlessly on the Fenix 5. It disabled the DOWN button. That wasn’t good. That is when I found Actiface.

I like digital watch faces. So, the Garmin default analog did not last long.

I tried the new Crystal face. I like it. Just prefer ActiFace more. Gives me much more data, with more color and graphics.

I prefer digital watch faces with a fair amount of data. For the last 7-months I had ‘ActiFace‘, permanently, on my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus.

I did download ‘ActiFace’ into my new (2-days old) MARQ Expedition when I happened to spot ‘Crystal’. It, in its default cool mint blue, looked cool. Also was not too busy. Stylish.

I downloaded it. It came up, no problems. Quickly customized it (as shown in top picture) via Garmin Connect. Kept it simple, just to the main fields I like. With all the widgets on the MARQ I really don’t need more than this on my watch face.

I tried some other colors. Nothing was as cool as this default blue. So, I am sticking with it. I like it. I think it looks good on the MARQ.

ActiFace“, for Garmin, has been the ONLY watch face I used on my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus over the last year. I like ‘ActiFace’. I had customized it for my preferences and it was just right.

On Thursday, while my Fenix 5 Plus was connected to ‘Garmin Express‘ I out of idle curiosity looked at what new watch faces were available at Connect IQ.

The ‘MagicDust‘ beta caught my eye. As you can see it does have a resemblance to ActiFace.

Downloaded it. No issues. Came up at once.

I have been too busy to sit down and customize it as yet. Appears that it has a TON of settings.

I like it. It has a certain quality and charm to it.

I am going to keep it on and see what I can do with it.

I will keep you posted.

Got a heads up on this from Garmin via Twitter.

Realized that this would be of interest to some of you.

They haven’t been downloaded as much I would have expected.

So, I am letting you.

Not my cup of tea. I am happy having ‘ActiFace‘ on my new Fenix 5 Plus all the time.

Happy Halloween. Cheers.

New Version Of ‘ActiFace’ For Garmin Watches, v7.1.4 — Works Best With Small Donation.

by Anura Guruge

Notice the “Donation Setting”.

ActiFace“, for Garmin, my preferred and default watch face on my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus, is at Version 7.1.4 as of October 11, 2014.

The icons have been changed. I think it looks better.

The BIG change, however, is that there is a “DONATION” setting — in Garmin Connect. Unless you ENABLE it YOUR user settings are NOT ACTIVATED. You don’t have to make a donation! You just need to acknowledge that you have seen the “DONATION” setting. I actually DID make a small donation. Only fair. It has to be a lot work. So, I was cool with that. I think we should only consider making a donation.

Here is the New Documentation.

‘ActiFace’ Has Now Become The Default Watch Face On Garmin Fenix 5.

by Anura Guruge

My Garmin Fenix 5 with ActiFace with THIS MORNINGS set-up. I made some changes in the afternoon!

Garmin Connect customization options.

My original plan had been to use ‘GearMin‘ as my preferred, and as such default, Watch Face on my Garmin Fenix 5.

I had ‘GearMin’ on my VivoActive HR. But, at least in my case, the ‘Down Button’ stops working when I use ‘GearMin’. Happened twice and that was enough for me.

I had downloaded ‘ActiFace’ at the same time as ‘GearMin’. I started using it. It has grown on me and I will even confess to liking it — especially after customizing it a few times. The top image shows more or less my current configuration. This afternoon I changed one field — the ‘elevation gained‘ reading. It was redundant. It is always 10x that of floors climbed, since that is Gramin’s criteria for floors climbed; i.e., 10’ change in elevation. So, I changed that to display ‘% of weekly step goal’.

I definitely recommend this watch face. It grows on you. Very capable watch face.
