Shameful Easter Bombings In Sri Lanka — BUT I Will Not Jump To Conclusions.

Just a FEW of my adoptive father’s 55+ books.

Google ‘Ananda Guruge‘ if you want to check out his Buddhist bona fides.

I have been railing against religious violence in Sri Lanka for YEARS.

To say that this Easter bombing saddens & distresses I does not even come close to genuinely capturing my disapprobation.

This is SO anathema to the happy multi-ethnic & multi-religious Ceylon (Sri Lanka only as of the 1970s) that I grew up in, 1953 to 1967.

My adoptive family was as Buddhist as you could get. Check out some of my father’s Buddhist books shown above and Google him. He was a Buddhist scholar, ACTIVIST and, alas, also one of the original architects of the ‘Buddhism First‘ precept for Ceylon. But, he was as open-minded when it came to religion as one could be. My SURROGATE FATHER, my adoptive mother’s brother-in-law, with whom I spent nearly as much time as with my family — and who influenced me more than any other man — was a practicing Baptist. My ‘father’ never had any issues with that. We celebrated Easter and Christmas, at my surrogate father’s rather fancy house with abandon replete with all the best goodies that money could get in Ceylon — imported ham, lamb, cakes etc. My surrogate father, who was a lawyer, and his wife, who as the Assistant Principal at Royal College (Sri Lanka’s premier boys school) were rich — and had no kids, bar I.

In addition, we had more Christians on my “mother’s” side; she one of 9. One of her brother’s was married to a Catholic as had one of her sisters. We were a CLOSE family — multi-religious. Nobody cared about who was who. We all mucked into to each other’s holidays.

My “Father’s” best friend, who he met with near daily, was a prominent muslim. Never an issue. Our neighbors, that my “mother” genuinely treated as part of her family, were Tamil Catholics. They were at our house, without fail, every day.

So, I grew up in an environment where religion had no ‘color’ or ‘race’. It was just like a name. Made no difference.

This is why this religious violence disturbs me so.

All that said, I refuse to jump to conclusions as to who perpetrated this horrendous series of crimes. The last TWO bombings, which were of private houses, puzzles me.

Though I am NO LONGER a Sri Lankan (in terms of citizenship or affinity) I do know, alas, the mentality of my brethren. We can be a devilishly devious, unscrupulous, ruthless bunch of bastards.

These bombings, I hate to say it as such, were ‘genius’. It has created the PERFECT TSUNAMI.

We now can have a circular firing squad, consisting of Buddhists, Christians and Muslims, each taking pot shots at the other. READ BETWEEN THE LINES.

This was geared to cause political, social and ECONOMIC upheaval. It will, of course, decimate the burgeoning tourist trade. That will have far reaching knock-on effects.

Not good.

But, please do NOT jump to conclusions.

It is not always the usual suspects.

Sri Lankan politicians are ruthless to a level that others will never comprehend.

Read Between The Line!

The Tragic Notre Dame Fire Brought To Mind One Of My Favorite Books “Is Paris Burning?”

by Anura Guruge

Click to image to access the Amazon listing for this amazing book. Must read.

One of my favorite books. My adoptive father, an avid reader and author, who lived in Paris for nearly 20-years, told me about it in the 1970s. I read it. Loved it.

I invariably keep a couple of copies of it, at home, in case I want to give one to someone who I know will enjoy it.

So, on Monday, April 15, 2019, for obvious reasons, this book was much on my mind. It is ironic. The title of the book “Is Paris Burning?” is what Hitler supposedly asked his Generals as they were fleeing from Paris — the Allies rapidly bearing down on the City. Hitler wanted Paris burned. His Generals disregarded his orders!

So, what Hitler failed to do …

After getting hooked on this book, I went onto this, by the same authors. I will confess I like ‘Freedom’ more than I do ‘Burning’, BUT they are both brilliant, compelling books.

Not So Great Story From New Zealand: The Ambassador To The U.S. & The Hidden Camera In The Bathroom!

Wow. What was he thinking. He had to have been rather desperate & ‘sick’. Feel bad for him.

Ambassador to D.C. no less. That is kind of close to home in that my adoptive father was Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to D.C. from 1992 — 1994 (when he retired, aged 65.)

After all the spate of positive stories about New Zealand (albeit in the wake of the horrible mosque massacre) this is quite a shame. New Zealanders, in general, must be mortified. I feel for them. I guess he is most likely headed to prison.

Trump, As Ever, Got The Facts Mangled, BUT South Africa Is Indeed Planning To Seize White-Owned Farms.

by Anura Guruge

On Google News search for ‘south africa white farmers
more stories like these.

NO KILLINGS of white farmers, as yet, from what I can tell.

But, the PLANS for seizing White-owned farms is indeed being talked about. Not sure if any have been seized as yet. I had heard that this was on the cards. This, for us in the know, is nothing new. It happened, as one the stories above points out, in neighboring Zimbabwe. Wasn’t pretty and their were dire consequences.

But, this type of ‘grab’ is something that ex-colonial countries think is their right. My own adoptive father spearheaded the ‘Schools Takeover‘ in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) during 1950 – 1960. It wasn’t farms, but mainly church owned schools. The Christians were NOT happy. They tried to assassinate my adoptive father, multiple times, and supposedly to kidnap me.

I need to look into this more. This was just to give you a head’s up and point out that Trump’s tweet was not all kosher.

Virgin Mary — The Patron Saint Of #MeToo.

Click to access this post from last year where I talk about how God had to have violated Free Will when he put Jesus on Earth.

A friend of mine by sending me a detailed exposition of ‘Determinism’ got me thinking about ‘Free Will’ again.

As I talked about in this post, I firmly believe that God violated ‘Free Will’ when he gave ‘us’ Jesus without ever consulting any of us — NOT even (poor) Mary.

And that got me thinking. Poor Mary. She had NO choice. She was NOT given a chance to say ‘No’!

Wow. How times have changed?

But, we don’t bring this up. It should be.

But, I am an equal opportunity skeptic. I was brought up a DEVOUT Buddhist by my adoptive parents — my adoptive father a big muckety-muck in International Buddhist circles.

As a child I was brought up to think what an amazing person Gautama Buddha was. Then, in my 40s, as a DIVORCED dad of two, I suddenly realized something. Gautama Buddha was a Deadbeat Dad! He abandoned his 1-day old son and snuck away at night with a male servant. They never heard from him for 7-years. Classic Deadbeat Dad. Buddhists get very mad at me when I bring this up. But, it has to be said.

So ….

Why do we cut slack?

And that then brings up …

Sri Lanka’s Ban Of Facebook, Temporary Be It, Was Unbecoming & OMINOUS!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and glance at here. From “Reuters”. Google “Sri Lanka Facebook” for more.

Sri Lanka needs to be BETTER than this.

Sri Lanka, for all of its convulsions for the last 70-years, is meant to be PROUD democracy.

It is NOT China, Egypt or some tinpot African dictatorship. I was disappointed to read about this. I though ‘we’ (though I gave up my Sri Lanka citizenship 35-years ago) had put media censorship behind. [More on that in a second.]

The ban on Facebook was during the latest spate of violence against the Muslims. The Government, rightly or wrongly, believed that Facebook posts were inciting the troubles. They had declared a 10-day State of Emergency, so everything, including closing down Social Media was game.

Ceylon/Sri Lanka and ‘State of Emergency’. I remember them well though my life there, 1953 – 1967 was during a relatively peaceful time!

Following the wildly and widely successful ‘Schools Takeover‘ [i.e., forced nationalization] program, Prime Minister (Aunty) Sirimavo Bandaranaike and her then favored henchman, my adoptive father, mounted a ‘Newspaper Nationalization’ program. My Adoptive Father, a conflicted fish as I came to learn, had a strong socialistic streak. He was all in favor. I remember though that unlike with the ‘Schools Takeover’ (where they was no dissent within the circles we moved), he got got a bit of pushback from friends and family. He used to argue vehemently that we needed it for the good of the country. Thankfully that program never came to be. I think Aunty B. ceased to be P.M.

So, let’s not try and revisit past ghosts.

I worry that this is the INCREASING Chinese influence on Sri Lanka.

If I was still Sri Lankan I would do whatever I could to make sure this didn’t happen again.

Buddhist On Muslim Violence Erupts In Sri Lanka (Again) — Just As I Have Warned.

As the above posts show I have been very concerned about this since 2014. There are more posts and IF you are interested, please search on “Sri Lanka Buddhists” & “Myanmar“.

The hardline Sri Lankan Buddhists have been itching for this ‘fight’. They want to emulate what is happening in Myanmar (née Burma) and the poor Rohingya.

This is Trump style Nationalism Sri Lanka-style. A Buddhist state with no other religions. Unlikely to happen BUT the Sri Lankan Buddhists will be eager and happy to spill as much blood as possible to try and make that happen.

This is the Buddhist version of the Crusades. Pacificity be damned. They THINK they are doing “Buddha’s” work. I hate to admit this BUT most of US Sri Lankan Buddhists are NOT that bright! That is the crux of the problem. Stupidity and ignorance.

I ceased to be a Buddhist 46-years ago, and a Sri Lankan 35-years ago.

Yes, my adoptive father bears SOME BLAME for some of this. But, here is the supreme irony. In the 1950s & 1960s, when this rabid Buddhist revor was still in its embryonic state, his BEST FRIEND was a Muslim, Senator A. M. A. Aziz. How my adoptive father, who became more and more like Trump as he grew older, would reconcile what is happening in Ceylon with his relationship with Senator A. M. A. Aziz would be fascinating to study. Being the poser he was, to his death, he would rationalize it. But, never in my eyes.

This is so sad.

I really would like the International Cricket Council (ICC) to intervene. Because after sex and violence, Sri Lankan Buddhist love their cricket. A boycott of Sri Lanka, in terms of cricket, would stop any violence in its tracks.

Sri Lankan Archbishop Emeritus, Oswald Gomis’ 2017 Christmas Greetings.

by Anura Guruge

arch_oswaldAs with posting the Catholic Press Photo, “Christmas Card,” posting Archbishop Oswald Gomis‘ Christmas card is an annual, honored and cherished privilege.

He has been a good and valued friend for many years.

He and my adoptive father were roughly contemporaneous and firm friends though on many issues related to religion they were on opposite sides. But, that was the beauty and magic of WHAT WAS Ceylon in the 1950s and 1960s. Folks were still friends, relatives and neighbors irrespective of religion.

Father Gomis is a wonderful human being. And to I, that is all that matters. He is now 85-years old.

Enjoy.

Thank YOU.

Merry Christmas.

Over the last few years he has been using the ‘+’ in front of his name.

That is not a plus sign. It is meant to be a CROSS. It is meant to connote a title assumed by clergy in the medieval times — that of a SINNER. So, the ‘+’ indicates that the Archbishop is signing himself, out of HUMILITY, as a ‘sinner’.

Instant Karma
by John Lennon.

Well as any regular reader of this blog knows, I, because of how the Germans destroyed Liverpool (England), refuse to have any truck with German cars.

I had already told you about this BMW spontaneous combustion back in May of this year. I did. {Smile}

It cracked me up then, it cracks me up NOW. I have no sympathy. I am relentless and ruthless when it comes to my antipathy to German cards. I tell people who own German cars, to their face, that it impresses me none and grieves me much. And that included my adoptive father

Enjoy.

Instant Karma.

Wolfeboro Adult Education — Another Proposed Spring 2018 Class, “Laziness Should Know No Bounds”.

by Anura Guruge

As with “Quick & Easy Meditation“, I, in my old age, am going about sharing some of my innermost secrets and ‘skills’ with you. Nobody better qualified to teach a class on ‘Being MORE Lazy’ than I. If the truth be known my middle name, all my life, should have been ‘lazy’ — Anura ‘lazy’ Guruge.

My adoptive father, always, maintained, with nary an exception, that I was lazy. He was, of course, as always, right. I have been lazy all my life. I think it is genetic (my REAL father supposed to have been a GAMBLER) though I have spent a lot of time and effort improving on my laziness so I can be even more lazy.

So, now I will share my secrets on how YOU TOO can be more lazy. Laziness knows NO bounds.
