Alton’s Famous & Unique ‘Airport On Ice’ Busier Than Ever On Sunday, February 21, 2021.

Per my post a week ago our Alton ‘Airport On Ice‘ was back operational this year having, unusually, NOT been operational in 2020. That, however, was NOT because of COVID, but because the ice was not thick enough. Well that was last year. This year, given the rather harsh February we have had, the ice is plenty thick & strong.

Per the tradition the Airport kicked-into ‘gear’ on the Sunday closest to Valentine’s Day — which this year happened to be on THE DAY itself. So, that made it kind of special & as I said in my post there were lots of folks around, on the ice. BUT, there wasn’t many planes.

Not so today. It was as busy as I have ever seen it — maybe even busier (& I have two decades of experience with this airport). We even had traffic jams with planes having to queue up waiting. They even had take-off & landing window. They would let 3 to 5 planes land one after the other, while the planes wanting to take-off had to wait. It was like a big commercial airport at rush-hour, e.g., 5pm at O’Hare in Chicago. You can see 4 planes taxing in on the very top picture. All very cool.

The Airport will now be open till at least the end of February UNLESS we get a heatwave that makes the ice unsafe. So, we have at least another 2-weeks. I will keep you posted.

Alton’s Famous & Unique ‘Airport On Ice’ Back In Operation In 2021.

This annual, around Valentine’s Day, ‘Airport On Ice‘, unusually, was NOT operational in 2020. NOT, however, because of COVID but because the ice was not thick enough.

Not so this year. It has been plenty cold enough — as I know, to my cost.

The runway is plowed & maintained during most of February, BUT the Valentine’s Day weekend tends to be when it is most busy. That Valentine’s was on a Sunday this year meant that there was a LOT of people on the ice — COVID notwithstanding. Most, however, wore masks. That was good.

Not that many planes. At most about 5 at any given time. I have upwards of 15. Maybe 20 in other years. But, this is NOT a normal year. Actually I have been noticing that I don’t see as many small planes about as I normally do. So much so that when I hear one I look up. Most other years I hear a few each day. Not so in 2021. I noticed that the other day when I heard one. Surprised I.

It was good to see the planes. I always make a point of trying to visit the airport at least once during its height.

Enjoy.

COVID-19 NH: Hardly Any Outdoor Dining In State Capital, Concord (N.H.)

It was 11:30am, on a Sunny (but a tad mild (@60F)), Tuesday — 2nd day that New Hampshire restaurants were open for outdoor dining.

But, it was ALL empty or NOT set up.

We just saw two folks, a mother & daughter — & I drove up/down North & South Main St. as well as Loudon Road.

‘Red Arrow’ diner had picnic tables outside but was only doing takeout — and they were NOT busy.

I was sure (that my friend) Alex Ray’sCommon Man” would not only be all set-up, BUT BUSY. I was wrong. It was empty. Not set-up for outdoor dining. That makes no sense. They have a huge car park ideal for it.

So …

So?

What gives?

Just time?

This week, from what I see, will be kind in terms of weather. No heavy rain. Doesn’t look good.

Stopped by “Dominick’s“, in Chichester, on the way back. Another joint with a HUGE car park. EMPTY with a sign on the door that said “CLOSED”.

I was amused by her (and yes, it is a ‘her’) message on the sign.

Does SHE realize the coded message that was in THE SONG?

Help from my friends‘. HHHmmmm. SMILE.

I am sure. That would definitely help. SMILE.

There Will Be NO ‘Airport On Ice’ In Alton In February 2020 (Or Any Other Month).

The ice is too thin. It needs to be at least 12″ and they are concerned that we have sections where the ice isn’t that thick this year. I can believe that.

I have not seen any trucks on any of the local lakes this year. Yes, snowmobiles, but they are much lighter.

An abundance of caution, of course, but you can’t blame anyone for that. You really don’t want a plane going through the ice. That would be rather bad form. I couldn’t remember but it appears that we have had other years — even as recently as 2016 — when the airport was called off because of thin ice.

So, that is that. I will miss not being able to take my usual quota of pictures. Fingers crossed for next year; 2021.

Microlight (Ultralight) Over Lake Winnipesaukee, Alton Bay — August 20, 2019.

Being at the right place, at the right time. This, Alton Bay, at 6:40pm, Tuesday, August 20, 2019.

We were just idling along waiting 15-minutes for our Chinese takeout order to be prepared at J.P. China.

There were two of them, but I only managed to catch one. Heard them before I saw them. Quite the roar.

I have seen plenty of microlights over the Lake in my three-decades up here — but, to be fair, I hadn’t seen any in a long time till today. Neat. Made my day.

Teischan (13) was with me. She claims she can’t remember seen one before. So, I am glad she got to see two. Enjoy.

Boats Of ‘Alton Bay’, New Hampshire — June 22, 2019.

Went to the ‘Bay‘, which is about 10-minutes from our house, to listen to the band playing from the bandstand in the water. Beautiful evening, albeit a tad temperature-challenged for what was the first day of Summer 2019. The band had not thought about setting up some wireless speakers on shore. So, they didn’t sound great. But, a few nice boats cruising around and the light was good. So, I snapped a few. Wanted to share. Enjoy.
