Looks Like NO Google Doodle For Sri Lanka 2019 ‘Aluth Avurudu’ (Sinhala New Year) — YET, YET AGAIN!

by Anura Guruge

It is nearly 9am on Sunday, April 14, 2019 in Sri Lanka and still NO Google Doodle for Sinhala New YearAluth Avurudu.

They have already posted the Google Doodles for Bangladesh, Thailand & Vietnam — for 2019 — as you can see above.

It could still happen, BUT it is NOT looking good.

I feel bad for the Sinhalese. Google really is giving them the finger! Shame.

Well, I did my bit 5-years ago and got Sri Lanka its VERY FIRST Google Doodle. And I am not even a Sri Lankan anymore — legally.

There are Sri Lankans that work for Google They obviously don’t care.

Sorry.

Happy New Year, irrespective.

Kapruka.com‘ does not miss an opportunity to showcase and market their amazing cakes — albeit these cakes (luckily for I) only being available in Sri Lanka.

Given that I have shared many of their cakes with you over the years, I know that there are many among you who like to see the latest, mouth-watering temptations making the rounds in Sri Lanka. So, here are the Sinhala New Year (Aluth Avurudda) 2019. In addition to cakes, they also do traditional food ‘hampers’ for the New Year. I will try and showcase those tomorrow.

In case you are wondering I am nothing but a customer when it comes to Kapruka. Though I give them huge amount of publicity I get nothing from them. That is OK. They have never asked me to do these posts. I do them for YOU.

Happy Sinhala New Year 2019.

The 3rd New Year of the Year for I.
But you can never have too many.

Enjoy. Rejoice.

I came across this Wikipedia page today when trying to research the auspicious times for the 2019 Sinhala New Year (Aluth Avurudda). I had not encountered it before —  though it appears that it was created in 2017.

I am glad it is there. It is a good start. Already a fair amount of information. That they don’t have the auspicious times for this year’s New Year is a bit of a shame. But, Bravo. We now have a foothold, on this topic, on Wikipedia. It will continue to grow and prosper. I am glad.

I actually don’t celebrate the Sinhala New Year, other than in my mind, because there is nobody around here to celebrate it with. I also have given up on astrology.

But I did this for nostalgia, because I do remember all of this well.

Enjoy. Happy New Year.

I had expected to find a Stamp Set for this year’s, i.e., April 14, 2016, Sinhala New Year, i.e., Aluth Avurudda. IF they did I could not find them — and please put me right. I will, of course, update this post.

Here is the link to the Philatelic Bureau of Sri Lanka. I couldn’t see any New Year related announcements.

No sooner is the Sinhala New Year, April 13 – 14,
done and dusted before Sri Lankan Buddhists
have to start gearing up for Vesak —
the Buddhist equivalent of Christmas, Good Friday
and Epiphany rolled into one mega holy day.

Sri Lankan Buddhist celebrate Vesak
on the Full Moon day of May
in 2015, on May 3, 2015 in Sri Lanka.

Buddhist in other countries will
celebrate it on June 1 — the June Full Moon.

It is possible that the Sri Lankans are celebrating it too early —
the May 2015 Full Year falling rather early in the month.

No matter. In Sri Lanka this is not negotiable
(like so much else when it comes to Buddhism).

Vesak is always the May Full Moon.

So with Aluth Avurudda successfully negotiated,
we will now turn our attention to Vesak —
though I do not ‘celebrate’ it per se.

I know that this year it started on April 13th
but I tend to think of April 14th as Sinhala New Year.

So Happy New Year, AGAIN.

Third (and last) New Year of the Year I celebrate.

April 13th to I is ‘Old Year’
— when I would take a bath (even when I didn’t need to)

It was also the birthday of the grandmother who brought me up
and, at birth, straightened my twisted limbs and made sure
I could ‘pee-pee’ because my foreskin was fused together.
Since she was the matriarch of a powerful family
her birthday was a big deal.
So for me New Year, in Ceylon, started in April 12th
and went on, non-stop, with people, food, presents
and celebrations till the 14th.

Rather than trying to reproduce the traditional pictures, e.g., oil lamps, betel leaves, milk rice etc., I wanted to share some OLD pictures from Ceylon — from the 1950s.

I don’t have as many as I should. About 10 years ago I threw away over dozen very large cartons of old photos — because I just didn’t have the space to keep them. I still have some BUT those from the 1950s and 1960s are SMALL and are mainly of family members. I found these two, of interest, and two pictures I had drawn, in Ceylon, c. 1963.

I hope some of YOU will recognize the person in the middle in glasses. Yes, that is Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike, Prime Minister from 1956 to Sept. 1959. He died just after my 6th birthday. I remember his death. I am sure I met him. His wife went onto be “Aunty Bandaranaike”, a lady that I spoke to, first thing in the morning, nearly every day for many years when I was 9 to maybe 12. I think this picture is at an airport. Click to ENLARGE.

A typical 1950s dinner party in Ceylon. I remember these. This was in Wellawatte, in ‘Hampden Lane’ — probably around 1955 (maybe 1956). Notice the banana trees (growing wild). This was in the gardens of the first house I lived — before moving to Nugegoda.

When I was in Ceylon I used to go to art school etc. and I was supposed to be able to draw and paint. I did do a lot of it.
I painted a lot of planes and trains. Here are two examples, probably from when I was about 10. Notice the brown pilot.
Judging from the engines I was trying to capture a Comet-4, the first jet plane I encountered and one that held me in thrall for years.
The train engine looks like what we used to call “Canadian Diesel” — but it might have been a “Power Unit”.
What is interesting is that it is not steam. I not only remember the steam trains I even worked on them! Different stories.
Helps when you have an uncle who was an inspector of railways.
