I Can’t Believe That American Airlines (AA) Is Now Painting Their Planes — It Is A Betrayal.

by Anura Guruge

The ‘new’ PAINTED AA planes.

Hadn’t flown American in a couple of years and had NOT noticed until ‘last’ week when we flew to New Mexico/Arizona to visit Canyon de Chelly, again.

I was upset to see the PAINTED AA planes.

As a MILLION MILE AA Frequent Flyer I have a vested interest in AA. The unpainted planes were supposed to save money. Paint adding 400 – 700 pounds of weight to a plane. But, it appears that keeping the metal look is not for free. This article from Boeing explains it, with figures.

But, unpainted buffed planes were the TRADEMARK of AA. I did most of my AA flying, 1980 — 1999 during the tenure of the legendary AA Chairman, Bob Crandall. I was a big fan of his. I remember reading, in the AA inflight magazine Crandall singing the praises of unpainted planes.

A quick Google shows me that I am NOT the only one that has expressed concern.

And now this. Change is hard. Change can be sad.

American Airlines (AA) Boeing 737s — No Window In Row 10 (Left Hand Side).

American Airline Boeing 737 No Window Row 10

A Google search CONFIRMED that this was a known issue.

The top pictures says it ALL. AA seats 10 A, B & C on Boeing 737s now do NOT have windows. 10 D, E & F does have a window. Go figure.

We encountered this on all four of our flights to Canyon de Chelly last week. I had booked my tickets directly via AA months ago. As a 1-Million mile ‘prefered’ passenger they recommended the best seats for us. These were the ones closest to the front. I took them on all four segments. Never told me that there was no window.

As it transpired this was no big deal. Teischan seats by the ‘window’ but she isn’t that fussed about looking out. She slept much of the way too — which is good. So, we didn’t even bother trying to switch.

But, just a HEADS UP.

Click to ENLARGE and read here. My 1st and ONLY ‘1 star’ review — ‘Acadia Sunrise Motel’ in Trenton, Maine.

Kind of amuses me that “tripadvisor” managed to cajole and pander me to write 51 reviews! They have one heck of a system and scheme, mainly relying on ones ego, to write these reviews. It is the ultimate in ‘frequent flyer’ type loyalty programs (as introduced by American Airlines in the 1970s) BUT the catch here is that the ONLY rewards you get is ‘recognition’! They give you nothing back — as far as I know — for writing these reviews. I definitely haven’t go anything other than these virtual badges. But, I will confess, that it can be satisfying to share your opinion.

I only went on ‘tripadvisor’, in September 2013, because I wanted to tell the world about the dreadful experience we had at the ‘Acadia Sunrise Motel‘ in Trenton, Maine — our first visit to Acadia. I was venting and ranting. We were mad. But then ‘tripadvisor’ sucks you in, very cleverly. They ask you about the “Visitor’s Center”, restaurants in Bar Harbor and the next thing you know you have written 3 reviews. And that is how it went.

I am by know means a regular or committed contributor. I haven’t by a long chalk reviewed all the restaurants we have been to since that first review. After a trip I typically feel compelled to review the hotels. Then they get me to comment on local attractions and restaurants. Soon I have all these badges and they keep on cajoling me. Once I passed 40 review I did want to do 50 and get ‘Top Contributor’ status. Not sure what is next. It is a harmless lark.
