I (and I am sure there are others who feel the same about this as I) will not use ‘Brilliant’ when it comes to ‘Fiddler on the Roof‘ unless it was hard earned and eminently deserved. The Brewster performance, with ‘kids’ in all the leading parts, definitely met this criteria and others to boot. It was a wonderful, uplifting, spirited performance with nary a flaw in sight. I will confess to being somewhat of a ‘Fiddler’ aficionado. It is probably my all time favorite musical. I have seen it on Broadway, on the big screen and have the DVD (which we as a family have watched a number of times). Yes, I was a tad leery about going. I was worried that a school production might not do it justice. I should not have worried. They aced it. The ‘kids’ did a marvelous job and I was very impressed and delighted. I was so proud for their parents. What an achievement.

Isaac Weiss-Meyer, who played Tevye with aplomb, is going to go far. That kind of talent and commitment can never be kept contained. I gather he intends to study drama in College. I am sure he will be starring in Hollywood within the decade. Mark my word.

Though we know a few kids that attend Brewster none of them (alas and alack) were in this excellent production. But we did know the Director, Music Director & Choreographer, Guinevere Hilton, Andy Campbell and John Ling respectively. Andy, of course is the Music Director of Clearlakes Chorale (in which Devanee has been a member for 4 years (or more)), Guinevere is Andy’s wife and we know John from ‘Northeastern Ballet‘ (from Teischan’s time with them). So knowing these three pivotal figures was neat. I captured the cast (from Brewster’s Website) and saved it for posterity (as a part of this blog). So if you want to see who was in this great play click here for a small, clean and safe PDF (or click the image).

A year ago, Feb. 20, 2015, we went to see Brewster’s production of ‘Grease‘. That was very good and we recognized some kids from last year. I think “Fiddler” was even superior because in my (biased) opinion it is much of a sophisticated and faceted musical, ‘Grease’, to me is like a plain ice cream cone kiddie size, while “Fiddler” is a full-blown ice-cream sundae with all-the-works and lots of sprinkles.

I took a lot of pictures using my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I am not going to try and publish them all here. Let me do it in batches as I have doing with the Philadelphia New Year’s Day 2016Mummers Parade‘.

There is really no point trying to find any other adjectives or superlatives. There is just one word that just so totally captures the very essence of the “North Shore Acappella” concert, in Wolfeboro, last night, and that word is ‘BRILLIANCE’. It was brilliance epitomized — BUT, in their case, it was expected. And did they deliver. Oh, yes they did. It was blinking, bloody brilliant.

Anderson Hall, at Brewster, was nearly packed. 356 very gratified patrons beating the previous “Great Waters” record for this venue by 80.

This was the third straight year that “North Shore Acappella” has done a “Great Waters” concert in Wolfeboro. As far as I know they, given their immense popularity, are the only ones that get invited like that — year after year. I know that they were rebooked straight after last year’s scintillating performance. We were there for that I just loved it. This is musical entertainment at its delectable best. Just unadulterated auditory ‘manna’ spiced with an energetic display of showmanship by 5 amazing guys. They are indeed true modern day troubadours.

And really, really, really charming and personable guys. We got to know them last year and they were a joy to work with. It was fun. It was wonderful, heartwarming concert. The audience loved it.

Stacey Kelleher’s Guest Spot Singing
“Lion Sleeps Tonight”

Stacey (18), from Ossipee (NH) and a graduate of ‘Kingswood High School‘, was this year’s intern Box Office Manager for “Great Waters”. Next week she starts as a freshman at Boston’s famed “Berklee College of Music” with plans to major in ‘voice performance’. I have, however, known her from 2 years ago when she sang with “Clearlakes Chorale” with Devanee.

That Stacey got to get up on stage with “North Shore” was my doing and her rousing, much appreciated performance, made me very happy and proud.

Remembering how “North Shore” last year welcomed a bunch of folk to sing with them, including most of the Guruges, I, a month ago, ‘told’ Stacey that I will get her on stage to sing with the guys. She didn’t believe me. She then looked at the pictures from last year and realized that it was a possibility. Over the next few weeks, every Friday, when I would see her I reminded her — and I could see that she was getting mentally prepared. She told me last week last week she was all set. So as the guys started to arrive and get set up I started telling them about Stacey. Jimmy’s daughter had graduated from Berklee. So he was really keen. I introduced Stacey to Vinny, Paul & Jimmy before the show. It took a bit of work to find a song that she knew that would work. The rest was HISTORY. She was good. It was very gratifying to see the looks on the faces of the guys. They were impressed.

After the show, when I was taking some pictures of Stacey and Jimmy, he said something along the lines: “yep hold onto these pictures. When you are famous we want to be able to say you sang with us!” And he wasn’t joking. She has a great future ahead of her and we all hope she ends up very famous as befits her talents and personality. I am nailing these pictures down too because WHEN she is famous I want her to remember that I arranged this guest spot for her — and I know she will remember. She is a great kid. I am as proud of her as I would be of Devanee.

This is one of the 2015 “Great Waters” concerts that have been on our radar — though more than likely we will be at all of them (I already having helped out at the 3 that have taken place already).

I checked out all the groups as soon as I got the schedule. ‘Red Molly‘ sure sounded good.

I listened to two YouTubes (above) and some tracks on their Website. Yes, my time of music. Folk-rock. That they cover one of my favorite songs, “Homeward Bound“, was a bonus.

And they have a Dobro player. I love the sound of a Dobro. Yes, that we are “lifelong” Alison Krauss (& Union Station) is a fact. Yes, we have even got to meet Alison (in her PJs) and the members of Union Station. Yes, we do have contacts.

Looking forward to this concert. See you there.

They definitely were GOOD. They might even have been VERY GOOD. I was suffering from a terrible cold, the first one I have had in 4 years, and was not feeling well. So I really could not do them justice in terms of my appreciation. Plus I was not familiar with their work. They definitely have a following and some of their fans were there. They sure appreciated what they heard.

I will say this. They produced the most exquisite guitar notes I have heard in a long time. Very sumptuous and rich. Perky. Reminded me of the clarity and robustness of a really decent red wine. This was my 5th performance at Anderson Hall and it was the best sound quality I have heard there — by a long chalk.

That said I am not sure, and I could be wrong, that Anderson Hall was the best venue for their kind of music. For a ‘Trio’ (as they still call themselves) PLUS 1 they have a lot of sound equipment. So having the stage and full sound deck at the back helped BUT I think they are better suited for a more intimate setting. Lets face it, they are a folk group. I would have loved to have seen them at “Inn On Main“. That would have been a great venue for them and the relatively small audience we had.

I would definitely like to see them again — when I am not ‘dying’. As ever VERY nice people. I got a chance to talk to two of them after the show, a long conversation with Robby Coffin. I had to ask him about his name. He was very nice about it. He has a nickname ‘Pine Box’. He is from Rockland, Maine — a place I am very familiar with given that Deanna is from Cushing, just down the road. Deanna did not make it to the show. She was volunteering at the Alton Central School (ACS) semi-formal dance that Devanee was attending. Mr. Coffin obviously knew Cushing and some people there. Denanna would have enjoyed talking to him.

They used to be a Trio. But, Herb Ludwig, alas, died, during a heart operation. They had to REPLACE him with two: bass guitarist Teg Glendon and guitarist Robby Coffin (and I am NOT even going to crack a smile at that name and about him being the stand-in for somebody that died). So now there is 4 but it appears that often they have even MORE. So definitely NOT a trio.

devonsquareyt1

From 2 years ago from foggy Maine. I think there is 6 of them on stage. So that would be a double-trio in my reckoning. Click to access YouTube video.

They sound good. I plan to be there IF I can. Our calendar is crazy!

Be there, or be square.

That is 1960s talk.

A short, rather jerky, YouTube video clip —
“Homeward Bound” by Simon & Garfunkel.

Click to access YouTube video.

Another glorious harmonious Friday evening in lovely Wolfeboro (N.H.) — the Oldest Summer Resort in the U.S.A — thanks to ‘Great Waters‘ and ‘Aztec Two-Step‘. Life, at least for me (and I am the first to admit that I lead a extremely modest and low-key life), doesn’t get much better than this. A convivial, congenial and competent concert. Live acoustic folk music. I am sucker for any and all of that. I can listen to Simon & Garfunkel all night and a bit longer and The Everly Brothers’ repertoire can be so liltingly soothing.

It was a good night (other than for the medical emergency that required a EMTs and an ambulance). I learnt how “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” came to be — and anytime I learn anything (which is most days, most hours) is a bonus. Very nice guys. There was no stage setup. At the end I did carry a few guitars out. That was about it.

I would go and listen to them again, with pleasure.

There was just under 200 people there and they really were into the music. That was good. Another successful night for ‘Great Waters‘.

Something about 12-strings. They kind of pluck at my psyche.
IF I ever take up playing the guitar again (which highly doubtful) I would go with a 12 string.
I did NOT know anything about this guitar, but then Michael Harrison (of ‘Great Waters‘) and Neal Shulman kindly educated me. An ‘Ovation‘ ‘Adamas‘. I looked it up. A $1,800 guitar.

Video of ‘Aztec Two-Step’, viz. Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman, doing Simon & Garfunkel in 2007. In this instance one of my favorite songs “April”.

They, viz. Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman, are highly acclaimed and it is said to be an evening of ‘classic duos’ — Simon & Garfunkel to the fore. I am a total sucker for any Simon & Garfunkel and as such I am looking forward to this. I should, with luck, be backstage. The first concert of this year, “Yellow Brick Road“, on March 20, 2015, was brilliant. So hoping that this will equal that — maybe even exceed it, though that may be hard. This will be a great way to wrap up what looks like the first week of Spring in the Lakes Region. The snow will definitely be gone by then. See you there.
