‘James O’Neil’, Today’s ‘Andrew Wyeth’, At His Lubec, Maine, Art Studio & Gallery.

There is an article about him in this magazine,
and you will RECOGNIZE some images (above).

The first time I ever saw a James O’Neil painting was 7-years ago, at an art gallery in Northeast Harbor (Acadia, Maine). I & Devanee (who was into paintings then) stood mesmerized. I (as you can see from the post above) immediately made a connection with Andrew Wyeth — & I even discussed it with the manager of the gallery who concurred. We were no strangers to Wyeth. My wife, who was born & grew up in Cushing, Maine — where Wyeth did most of his iconic work — knew Wyeth. Her aunty, ‘Siri‘, was featured in quite a few of Wyeth’s works. A large reproduction Wyeth has hung in our informal dining room since we moved into our house. So for us to think of him as Wyeth, reincarnated, took some doing. But, he is good. He, in my opinion, is brilliant. Immensely gifted & committed to his craft.

That he is Wyethian is no accident or coincidence. Wyeth was a major influence & James even spent time in Cushing.

7-years ago I was unaware of another American painter, John Noble. But, thanks to “Irving Stone’s” ‘The Passionate Journey’ (1949) that I ploughed through a few months ago, I know more about him than I really wanted to know. I am now struck by similarities between John Noble & James O’Neil in terms of their use light, fascination with the sea & their passionate work ethic. Fortunately, Jame O’Neil isn’t hounded by the demons that John Noble could never shake off. That is a very good thing.

Meeting James O’Neil, in Lubec, right outside his studio cum gallery, was total serendipity. I had not gone looking for him. I didn’t even know he lived in Lubec.

Quoddy Head State Park“, of late, has become one of my favorite places to loiter. When I am at the ‘Bold Coast‘ I make a point of visiting it at least once a day. Hence, why I have been there over 10-times in the last 6-months. Well, I was there just ahead of sunset last Wednesday, March 10, 2021. But, I had also been there at sunset the two previous evenings too. So, there was not that much new in terms of light & photographic options. So, I decided to try & catch some light from a higher elevation. Klondike Mountain, just a few minutes away came to mind. So, I drove up there. But, it was too snowy & icy. So, I decided to explore the area in my car. That is when I saw the sign for his gallery. I went up the road, looked around & came back. I stopped to take some pictures. A gentleman was standing outside cradling a dog. I asked if he was “James O’Neil“. He was. I was elated.

He invited me to come back for a tour at noon the next day. I was not going to let that opportunity pass. We met.

He is a delight. A very kind, gentle, generous man — very humble & self-effacing. He gave me the grand tour. Wow. What a place. What character. What art. What a view. He gave me permission to take pictures BUT I opted not to take any closeups. I didn’t want folks trying to ‘get’ prints off his work. Hence, the pictures you see here. He very kindly gave me an in depth tutorial on ‘egg tempura‘. Wow.

He is a musician too who plays multiple instruments & is a member of a Celtic performing trio called the “O’McCrelli“. They perform all over Maine, coming as far south as Portland. I found them on YouTube. James is on the left, on guitar.

Why Just Pick On Balthus, What About Andrew Wyeth And His 14-Year Old Nudes?

by Anura Guruge

From the U.K. Daily Mail. Click to access original.

From New York City’s very own PIXII. Click for original.

The Balthus painting in question, “Thérèse Dreaming” —
CROPPED.

What about American icon, Andrew Wyeth?

He painted a 14-year old girl nude — multiple times.

I know and YOU can check it out. Just Google “Wyeth Siri 14 years nude“.

Here is BUT one article — click to access in full.

Click images to ENLARGE and read here.

Though I am a great fan of Andrew Wyeth, this aspect of his work has always bothered me — as father of three daughters.

I kind of reconciled it as “well, that was then” — though it wasn’t that long ago. That 14-year old and I are contemporaries. I know.

Well, now that we have this new — justified — awakening … WHAT about Wyeth? Should he be allowed to get away with it?

Why target just the New YorkMetropolitan Museum of Art‘? What about all the galleries that carry Wyeth?

How Did YOU Read Mike Luckovich “Hillary’s World” Cartoon?

by Anura Guruge

Click to access Mike Luckovich’s July 29, 2016 “Hillary’s World” cartoon at “truthdig.com”

How did YOU ‘read’ (i.e., interpret) this Mike Luckovich’s cartoon
which is, of course, a very clever takeoff of Andrew Wyeth’s iconic “Christina’s World” (1948)?

250px-Christinasworld

Deanna made a point of bringing this cartoon to my attention yesterday.

Kind of personal to her.

Christina Olson lived in Cushing, Maine and the famous (Farm) House in Wyeth’s painting is (still) in Cushing — where Wyeth used to Summer.

Deanna is from Cushing and knew Wyeth.

So ….

Christina always GOT home … though it was a struggle.

Is that WHAT Luckovich MEANT to portray?

That Hillary WILL get to the White House though it might be a struggle?

I am not sure how many others will get this …

So, what do YOU think?

You can see from the above that the Langlaises lived in Cushing, Maine. That, waterfront, is where Deanna, a lobsterman’s daughter, grew up. Cushing is also famous for its Andrew Wyeth connection — he having a Summer Home there.

Helen Langlais was Deanna’s 1st & 2nd grade teacher (c. 1972 – 1973). She would take the kids to her farm, the 90-acre spread talked about above, on ‘field trips’. So Deanna has seen much of this artwork.

Just wanted to share this with YOU. Enjoy.

Eric Hodecker is Stephen Hodecker’s brother. Given that he lives in Meredith, N.H., as does Stephen, I would have to think that I have met him. I do remember a Christmas party, probably 1998, at a Hodecker household, with a Hodecker wearing a very clever ‘Viagra Erectable-on-Demandred christmas hat. Given his humor and talent that very well could have been Eric.

Not sure how or why he was not on my radar given that I have followed Stephen’s work since 1987.

A few days ago Stephen posted Eric’s ‘deer co-worker’ cartoon, middle (yellowed) one on top, on Facebook. I LOVED it. My time of off-beat but incisive humor.

I befriended Eric. Now I can follow his work better. I need to find more of his work. Very clever. What a family. What talent.

My kind of British humor.
I am sure Eric will get a kick and maybe some inspiration
from this video.

Stephen Hodecker, quite justly, is well known as a painter, his nudes, in Meredith, very publicly displayed.

Stephen, however, is also a very accomplished bronze sculptor — and sculpting in bronze is not easy.

Here is very sensuous nude he sculpted c. 1998. Not sure who the model was.

I was lucky enough to get some pictures of it the other day.

As I have mentioned before, and spelled out in some detail here, we have somewhat of a family connection with Andrew Wyeth. Deanna, who grew up in Cushing, Maine, where Wyeth had his Summer Home and did most of his most famous paintings, knew him and her aunt, by marriage, is ‘Siri‘, one of the young ladies, from Maine, painted by Wyeth.

So when Artsy sent me an e-mail about their new Andrew Wyeth page and asked whether I would feature it on this blog I was more than happy to oblige. Check it out. Neat resource. I was impressed and so will YOU. Cheers.

I have known Stephen Hodecker since 1998.
[I also used to know his sister who is also a well-known artist.]

I have a bronze of his that he cast in 1999.
Deanna and Devanee have adopted it.
Deanna, especially, has taken a proprietary interest in it.

These days I typically only see Stephen if we both happen to be at
Giuseppe’s, Meredith [N.H.] at the same.
And this usually happens when we attend the annual
JTG Music Memorial Extravaganza.

So, we did meet Stephen this year
and I got his latest business card …

I had not noticed before or maybe his style has evolved.
He definitely has some Wyethian touches these days.
Maybe most New England artist end up with some influence.
Next time I see him I will have to tell him that
Deanna actually knew Andrew Wyeth.

Stephen Hodecker

Stephen Hodecker at the 21st JTG Music Memorial Extravaganza at Giuseppe’s (Meredith) on Sunday, March 29, 2015. [[See posts on this blog, March 30, 2015.]]

What I (rightly or wrongly) consider to be the most famous Hodecker nude. The setting appeals to me and I am quite partial to the ‘subject’ matter. And that is all we are going to say.
