Estate Sale In Chester, NH, With Some Incredible Antique Toys & Memorabilia.

Deanna saw this on the Web. Some pretty neat antique toys — NOT that I want any of them, anymore. I have a few similar. We no longer have the space.

We went to one of these “603 Estate Sales” in June in Alton — had a lot of fun and made out like BANDITS. We were there at the end and they basically gave us a ton of stuff for $15 (I think). At that stage they just wanted to get rid of as much stuff as they could.

Sadly the weather is not going to be nice on Saturday. That might be a damper. Sunday might be ‘OK’ but all the good stuff would be gone by then since I am sure diehard collectors will be queing up for this Sale in the rain.

Our 1968 ‘BRG’ MGB Sporting Its New 1968 NH Scenic Number Plate.

by Anura Guruge

Taken by Deanna on her ASUS phone. I am currently camera-less

A cute, ‘value-added’ feature of New Hampshire’s car licensing — when it comes to “Antique Plates“. IF your car is qualified to have “Antique Plates”, and you indeed do have them, THEN IF you can find a NH number plate corresponding to the year of your car you can put that plate (or plates) on your car in place of the “Antique Plates”. We were told this, in detail, last September, when we got around to registering our 1968 ‘British Racing Green’ (BRG) MGB as an antique — which it is.

In October 2015 I bought the above plate, from eBay, for Devanee’s birthday. That they were a matching green and had ‘3’, ‘6’ & ‘9’ was a bonus — those being some of my favorite numbers.

It took us till TODAY to finally get it mounted on the MGB. Part of the delay was that you have to go to DMV in Concord, NH with the new plate, an old plate and your registration and have the ‘year plate’ (e.g., 1968 plate) registered.

I couldn’t find TWO 1968 plates. I should look again. Of course, I am in the market. IF you have have two 1968 NH plates PLEASE contact me.

It is cool. Took the MGB out for a fairly long spin. Did good. We like it.

We Went To The ‘Pink Cadillac’ In Rochester, NH For Mother’s Day. It Was ‘OK’.

4. Giuseppe’s, Meredith Oct. 11, 2012.

This year’s Mother’s Day plans had to be curtailed because it was ‘Clearlakes Chorale‘ concert weekend for Devanee (and don’t ask me why they would pick Mother’s Day weekend for their concerts). She had to be there before 1pm on Sunday and the concert wasn’t going to finish till about 4pm. Deanna and Teischan attended the Sunday concert, I having gone to the Saturday night performance. So, the plan was to meet at the new ‘Rusty Moose‘ in Alton, have a meal and then go plant shopping in Rochester for Deanna — that being the family tradition, Deanna getting plants for her garden boxes and flower beds for the Summer.

I got to the ‘Rusty Moose’ at 4:10pm as planned. It was CLOSED!

P1020619So, given that it was a beautiful day, we proceeded to Rochester via the back roads of New Durham finally ending up in Farmington. We made a truly serendipitous discovery: this amazing antique place, called the “Ol’ Shoe Store”. It was closed. It is only open Saturday’s from 10 to 4. We are going. I happen to notice the large moose and pulled in. We peeked in through the windows. They have a beautiful, wooden, carved nude that I would love to have. We are going to go there one of these Saturdays.

We stopped at Walmart to see if they had plants that met the needs. They did. We were there for a long time as we are wont to do. So it was past 6pm when we got out of there.

Deanna and kids were ravenous by then so we didn’t have time to venture far. We drove by the ‘new’ Mexican diner. Somehow seems incongruous to try and eat Mexican in NH in a gleaming, aluminum, classic 50s diner. The next eating place was the ‘Pink Cadillac’. For whatever reasons we had never been there before though we stop at the gas station, often.

We decided to give it a try. It wasn’t busy. Not counting the bar area they appear to have 4 separate rooms, two main ones on either side of the bar. One is bright, cheery, with new tables and packed with Coca-Cola memorabilia. The other is dark and dingy with some beat up tables (sporting signs saying that they are soon to be renovated). I guess we didn’t make the cut to make the better dining room. It was probably me. But we are glad they put us in the dingy room because we got an outstanding waitress. IF not for her this write up would be much different. She was the main redeeming point of that diner.

It was ‘OK’ and that is about as far as we can go. Funnily enough I was talking to somebody who had also eaten there recently and she said the same thing: ‘average, and that is about it’. Not in the same league as the ‘Red Arrow‘ or the ‘Circle Restaurant‘.

I wanted the steak. They had run out. Ended up with steak tips. I ordered appetizer triple, one of the items being the fried mushrooms. The mushrooms were cold! I substituted a small salad for my included potato for a $1 more and got 2 forkfuls of insipid greens. C’est la vie. We were not impressed. Doubt whether we will go there anytime soon. But, I am sure there are lost of folks in the Rochester area that have no issues with it. Good for them.

Alton, NH, Old Home Day 2012. So Much For The Fireworks. IF You Saw Them Bully For You.

Well it says it all.

Suffice to say we missed the fireworks and WE are not amused. Yes, we had gone down to the Bay in the afternoon and walked around. Granted it wasn’t the best of days. But it looked a bit empty, lackluster and downbeat. Didn’t see any notices about fireworks being early in case of bad weather. I have to say that I am underwhelmed by how this event is organized and in particular publicized. I would have gladly have posted whatever they wanted to say about times, rain dates, early fireworks.

C’est la vie. Par for the course for Alton. No, we didn’t check before we left — at 8:55pm. It wasn’t raining at that point.

Got to hear two songs from Echotones. They seemed good. Nice beat. A few old folks, even older than me, were bopping around the bandstand. Tried to get Deanna to get out and dance. She wasn’t having any of that.

So a bit of a damp squib in general. Maybe starting next Summer I am going to give Alton fireworks a miss all together and just go to those in Wolfeborough and Pittsfield.

The lightning show was good. Waiting, patiently, to lose power.

Alton, NH, Old Home Day 2012, With Fireworks, This Weekend August 11 – 12, 2012

Alton Bay in olden days.

Alton Bay in olden days. Ticket office is still there. I did a 3 hour stint in it this afternoon.

I have mentioned Alton Old Home Day once before — pointing out that the fireworks on the Saturday of that weekend is usually better than Alton’s hit-or-miss July 4th fireworks.

So, I now feel a bit responsible to provide you with a heads up as to when they are. They will be, with luck (and weather permitting), this Saturday, August 11 most likely between 9 and 9:30. There will be a concert at the Alton Bay bandstand, no no not the one in the middle of the bay, the more mundane one in the parking lot, at 7pm.

To many the highlight of the Saturday is the 5K road race. I am usually in bed at the time it starts, though I do run close to 5K, on Prospect Mountain, at least 5 days a week. Honest. [IF you don’t believe me, try this. It is ultra neat, even if I say so myself. You can find ME on Google Maps, yes Google Maps … running on less. Do a Google Maps on Water Street, Alton, NH. Then select Street View. Yes, that brown guy is ME. What is funny. I do not remember seeing a Google car with the cameras and I usually don’t miss much. OK. It is not Prospect Mountain. I used to run other routes.]

There will be the usual antique boat show at the docks — though I think it wraps up quite early in the afternoon.

And the inevitable craft fair.

I did do a Google. Tons of results for the 5K race, but couldn’t find the program for 2012. Yes, they do have a program and if you look carefully it is for 2011. That is par for the course for Alton. I am surprised it is that recent. If I get some more info I will put it up here. Enjoy.

I will most likely be at the Bay in the afternoon. Look out for THE brown guy, usually with a big smile on his face. That will be me. OK? Cheers.
