Garmin & Fitbit Sued By Philips For Patent Infringement (Having To Do Mainly With The Apps).

by Anura Guruge

There seems to be four patents involved, and they, on face value, look pretty broad and vague, e.g., ‘providing performance data to an athlete‘! Another has to do with exercise functionality being monitored by a networked APP. Philips is claiming that Fitbit’s violations go back to 2007 (which is a long time) while Garmin only started to infringe 7-years later.

Philips is basically asking for damages and for Garmin & Fitbit to may a licensing fee going forward. This will drag through courts for years and each company will spend millions in lawyers’ fees arguing their case.

Android 8.1.0 (Oreo) New ‘Storage’ Management Tab Makes Accidental APP Deletion Easy!

by Anura Guruge

So the first image, at top, shows what the new Android 8.1.0 (Oreo) STORAGE management tab looks like. Different to what it used to be in prior versions of Android.

Up at the top of that tab there is the BIG BLUE BUTTON that says “FREE UP SPACE“.

When you press that you get the next screen with the filing cabinet with a drawer open … with the “Review Recent Items” link. Click that.

The you get the next screen showing APPS with memory usage next to it. Well, from the older Android versions that could be confused with CACHED data. So, you might just tick that assuming that this will remove the cached data given that we are in STORAGE — not APPs.

Not so. What it deletes is the APP itself!

Yes, the filing cabinet screen warns you of that … BUT who reads the fine print.

So, be warned. No warnings such as “Do You Really Mean To Delete This APP?

Just does it. Not even a CONFIRM screen.

This is poor.

When Android 8.1.0 gets rolled out BEYOND Pixel 2 (XL) phones I am sure a lot of people will run into this.

So, you have been warned.

Google Pixel 2 (Oreo) — 6 APPs I Installed Disappeared, UNINSTALLED by System!

by Anura Guruge

I posted at “Android Central”. Click image to access my post … thread.

As some of you know (from all the posts on this blog) I got myself 128GB Google Pixel 2 phone for Christmas 2017 — my first real smartphone.

I got it mainly for the camera, but I am glad to have a decent phone — though I still prefer to use my ASUS ZenPad 10.1″ running Android 7.0 for most of the APPs because I like the bigger screen.

Between Christmas and Friday I installed 8 APPs from the Play Store. They are APPs that I also have on my ASUS ZenPad.

These 8 APPs were:

1. Garmin Connect

  2. Samsung Gear

  3. FAST (speed test from NetFlix)

  4. Amazon Kindle

  5. Bank of America

  6. Fidelity Investments

  7. Project Fi

  8. NVMS7000 (security camera app).

Configured them all with account numbers, passwords etc. AND used them all. Took me 20 minutes to set up NSMS7000.

This evening, i.e., Saturday, December 30, 2017, I went to use FAST.

It was NOT there!

Then realized other APPs were missing. Home screen nearly empty. See above image.

From the 8 installed ONLY Project FI and Samsung GEAR remained.

Others gone. Not in APP tray. Not in APPs.

Appears in the Play Store Library — but not as INSTALLED.

I did NOT uninstall them.

Just disappeared.

NOT good.

I just reinstalled and configured them — with the exception of NVMS7000. That takes time and I need my tablet to serve as crib sheet for the settings.

The missing APPS REINSTALLED. Yes, reinstalled. Now I have a screenshot record. Click to ENLARGE.

Called up Google Support. Got the Manila (Philippines) Call Center. That is a frigging JOKE. They are doing ‘ganja’. It is so strong you can smell it over the phone!

Something went wrong at Global Google HQ with this rather nice Google Doodle.

I expected a Winter Solstice Doodle either yesterday, given that it really did happen yesterday,
or today. At midnight I found this Doodle in the Archives
BUT it was not enabled for the U.S.!

Today, Dec. 22, the day after the Solstice per se,
they activated it for the U.S. around 11:45 am.

Very strange.

Welcome YULE!

It starts off as the FOOTNOTE on the standard Google search page.

Then YOU have to decide whether YOU join the DARK or Light side.

Do I have a CHOICE?

I don’t think so. I am a DARKIE whichever way you look at me.

I set up a Countdown Clock because I can’t wait to CANCEL my DirecTV account.
I am on a 2 year contract.

#16. I now have PIP on my main 47″ TV (that is directly connected to the Genie HR 34) but not on my 27″ HD (connected to a Genie Mini) in our bedroom.

#17. The installer who was a nice enough guy (#10) though he actually commented about my Philips ‘Sound Bar’, and we spoke about audio via HDMI, did NOT set the Genie audio option to Dolby 5.1 though, of course, I have Dolby 5.1 on my Sound Bar — which is what delivers all my audio.

#18. No sound last night on Channel 203!

#19. DirecTV, on Saturday, less than a day after the installation, tried to charge me $5 to speak to an operator!

#20. I found a big, long bolt, on my driveway yesterday, where the DirecTV installer had parked his unmarked, open truck, this bolt obviously having fallen off that truck — the bolt right where it could have got embedded in the wheels of one of our vehicles necessitating a tire repair.

I filed a Better Business Bureau (BBB) complaint, at the L. A. Office, for the HR 34 rather than HR 44 scam on Saturday, June 22, 2013.

#11. Frigging PIP has disappeared from the ‘info’ bar. So NO PIP again. Did I tell you that I really, really, really despise DirecTV?

#12. I get my first bill, in my e-mail, 6 hours AFTER they charge my credit-card. So they first charge my credit card, then send me a bill. Nice.

#13. Other than the Super Bowl we don’t watch ‘Football’ (just don’t have the time). I have now tried 3 times, by phone, to cancel my ‘NHL Sunday Ticket‘ BUT they won’t let me!

#14. Though I have told them TWICE that I don’t want it, my bill (#11) informs me that they will be charging me $7.99 for a protection plan next month!

#15. The installer who was a nice enough guy (#10), and said that he had worked for DirecTV for 14 years, set my bedroom ‘Genie Mini‘ just for 480p, though the TV is 720p, and when I asked him said that it would automatically adjust. It didn’t BECAUSE he did not have the settings at ‘Native’ or have the 720p box ticked! Pretty poor.
