‘Art Harriman’ Leaves Sandwich Fair After 38-Years As Master Of Ceremonies.

Art Harriman, the World record holder for playing the smallest harmonica ever (1″), has been a fixture at Sandwich Fair, N.H., for the 20-years or more that we have been attending.

Monday, October 10, 2016, was, however, his last appearance at Sandwich Fair. It transpires that he has been there, every year, without fail for 38 years! That would mean that he has been there, regaling the punters, since 1978. That is a long time.

I did not know this but it transpires that “Common Man” founder/owner, Alex Ray (who has been providing food at Sandwich for 40 unbroken years), was instrumental in bringing Art to the Fair. Thank you Alex.

My friends, “Annie and The Orphans” have been performing at Sandwich for over 28-years (with a few years gap several years ago). Ironically I called up Art, on the phone, and spoke to him about getting “Annie and The Orphans” back to Sandwich. He was very gracious.

Annie and The Orphans” & Alex Ray gave Art quite the farewell, “Annie …” doing an extended 90(+) minute set. It was moving, but kind of sad. Definitely the end of an era.

Thank YOU, Mr. Art Harriman.

Sandwich will never be the same to us without YOU. We have never known Sandwich without you standing on the stage.

I am surprised, but I think there is two factors at play — and the possible land mines per se isn’t one of them.

I think there are factions who want to show solidarity with the Browns given that paying taxes is not a popular pastime in New Hampshire. The other is the minimum $250,000 price tag. I think that is too high. IF I had any money I would make an offer to buy this place. Actually if anybody who has a say in this reads this they should contact me. I will BUY IT — for a price. The land mines worry me NOT. I know that the technology is available to have them cleared.

Also interesting that her dental office in prime Lebanon did not sell. Price again had to have been a factor.

That nobody sat in the 16 chairs provided for the potential bidders, to me, tells its own story. The good folks of New Hampshire do not want to be seen involved in this tax-evasion case. Good for them.

I gather they have played to great acclaim at Cate Park before. I don’t think I have seen them. I am still kind of undecided whether I am really a major ‘Bluegrass’ fan. I can listen to it BUT it doesn’t do as much for me as other genres. Not sure what our plans are for Saturday evening. I realize, to my horror, that we have ONLY been to one concert at Cate Park this Summer and that was to see “Annie & The Orphans“. Much of this, if not all, has to do with conflicts with ‘Great Waters‘ concert — and yes, ‘Huggins Fair‘. I had hoped to walk over to Cate Park during ‘THE Fair’ but that never happened and I am kind of curious that no notes drifted across from the Park. I have heard Cate Park concerts while doing ‘Huggins’.

Anywho … just a heads up. Seems like a nice band. Enjoy.

When we were at the heartwarming and as ever wonderful “Annie & the Orphans” concert last Saturday Deanna having done a customary, first-pass, tour of the Park came back all gushing saying “their is a band that you will want to see”. Deanna, plain and simple, knows what I like. She was referring to this notice she had seen next to the bandstand and taken a picture of to make sure that we had it for posterity. Of course she was right. I did not know of them but this was my kind of music. I am a sucker, of long and distinguished standing, when it comes to folk music and country. Throw in Western Swing and what is there NOT to like. Yep, I wanted to see them. But, alas and alack, I am NOT sure whether we will get to see them at Cate Park! Bummer cubed! But, I already checked their schedule. I will drive 2 hours, even to Maine to see them. I just listened to them on YouTube video (below). They gave me goose bumps. Wow. They are GOOD, good and GOOD. So, if you are within 40 miles of Wolfeboro, the Oldest Summer Resort in the U.S., on Saturday afternoon hoof it over to Cate Park. You will not regret it.

What can I say about ‘Annie & The Orphans‘ that I haven’t gushed about before. They were brilliant. Just plain, good ol’ fashioned, heartwarming musical entertainment by a very dedicated, committed and warm bunch of guys. Nice as apple pie. Perfect way to spend a perfect 4th of July weekend Saturday evening in Wolfeboro, N.H.

I started seeing them at Sandwich Fair c. 1998. Deanna thinks that she saw them at ‘The Fair’, where they were the perennial favorites for decades, even prior to that.

We saw them at Cate Park last year and loved. There was no way we were going to miss them this year.

I knew it was their 50th Year since it was their 49th last year and I can still do easy math such as that.

Thank YOU, “Annie & The Orphans”. Bravo.

This picture was taken, on an iPhone, by a lady from Virginia, who we had just met at the concert because her grandkids were playing with Teischan.

Part of my marriage vows was that I would dance with Deanna, whenever we could — even every day in the kitchen, if must, because Deanna loves to dance and feels that she was deprived of being able to dance as much as she would have liked. So I try to make amends.

I think they are the Cat’s Whiskers. I got to know them years ago when they were a annual staple at Sandwich Fair.

2014 is their 50th year as a band!

They are good, very, very, very good. ‘Anatole‘ (i.e., Annie) and his boy orphans are just unmitigated, very talented entertainment.

I will ‘walk’ a long way to see them. Last year, at Cate Park, they were so brilliant that they kept a huge impending storm at bay.

We have a crazy schedule this whole week, into Saturday (as we also did last week), BUT we plan to be there for “Annie and the Orphans” and I will, after the show, go and press the flesh with the boys. They are just a  group of men. Very uncomplicated fun.

As we used to say in the 1960s (and I remember vividly since I didn’t do the drugs) “Be There, Or Be Square”!

Enjoy.

Thanks Anatole. YOU are THE MAN!

The happy, family-face of Sandwich Fair. This father just won this huge prize. Don’t know him, but I saw him winning while we were having lunch. Asked if I could take their picture. He was game. This is what Sandwich is all about. Kids smiling.

We always make it to Sandwich, rain or shine — and we have trudged through the mud. Not this year. It was good weather. Not as hot as it has been in some years but just right.

First time we have been on a Monday, Columbus Day. We usually, like most others, typically go on Saturday — but this year Teischan had Nutcracker practice. Given the choice between Sunday and Monday decided to go on Monday to see what it was like. Senior’s Day. So targeted at me. $4 to get in. Art Harriman, the eternal M.C., a senior himself, serenaded us.

Fairly decent crowds. Not packed. That was nice. But, when we got there shortly after 11:20 they claimed that both free car parks were full. They pull that stunt every year. Well, we are no strangers to Sandwich. So just drove up to the village green, and parked on the side of a church for free. No way we were going be paying for parking — on principal. Where we parked was actually closer to the fair. So!

Met a few people we know. The Alton Police Chief was there deputizing. Chatted with him a few times. Julie and Hayden, from Giuseppe’s (Meredith), were there. Always good to see Julie.

The two tribute bands ‘Bon Air‘ and ‘Mellow Yellow‘ were good, the latter (from Vermont) very, very good. Though they played a number of times we only got to hear them for about 20 minutes. That was a shame. I could have listened to them for much longer. Best tribute band we have heard this year, and we went to about 5 (maybe 6) tribute concerts this Summer.

For the first time in my life I went to a fair and did NOT have apple crisp! Yes, I must be ill — as I am continually told by my doctors. Actually I didn’t eat ANY fair food — though the prices were very fair and compelling. Thought about having a sausage, but decided against. I eat too many (low fat ones be it) as it is. Instead I ate a banana, two apples and some egg salad (without any bread, of course). FOR ME staying away from food at the fair is easy. It has to be the demographics of those that go to Sandwich Fair. I notice it every year: there are a lot of very big men at Sandwich and I won’t, diplomatic, as ever, mention the ladies. This is what kills me. If I get talking to any of them, it doesn’t matter that they are limping or using a walking aid trying to battle gravity, they assure me that they have no cholesterol, no high-blood pressure and certainly not diabetes. Drives me nuts. Good jeans. That is my problem. We didn’t have good jeans in Ceylon — actually we didn’t have any jeans. The men mostly wore sarongs. That is why doctors love to tell me that I am a heart attack waiting to happen.
