Concord Market Days 2019 — Friday, June 21.

For the last few years we have made a point of not missing Concord’s vibrant ‘Market Days‘. So, 2019, was not going to be an exception. We had to be in Concord anyway (for I to pick-up some new gas permeable contact lenses) and we knew beforehand that the weather (unlike the previous day) was going to be amenable. And that was indeed the case.

We got there around 2:40pm. Parking was NOT an issue. We were able to park, at a meter, on South Main street just yards from the start of the blocked off section. That was good. There was no rain. Some dark clouds on and off. But, also some sun.

Met some great artists. That is always the bonus.

Everybody is so friendly and after the soaking they had on Thursday happy that the rain had been replaced by crowds. I hope they all did well. Not sure why we need 5 or 6 separate large tents all selling the same ‘South American’ artifacts. None of them are local. We did buy some stuff from one of them and I had a brief chat with the proprietor. He is from New York and drove up for this. He claims he also does Sandwich Fair. Not sure that they are all related but to I it would make sense just to have two tents. But, c’est la vie.

If you can please do try to make it.

Concord is vibrant. They really make an effort. Thank you.

He was a vendor at ‘Four Corners’. We didn’t buy anything from him, but did so, from his niece, in the stall next door. As soon as I saw him I thought he looked like a movie star Navajo. He agreed, quite graciously, to be photographed. I think he has some classic features.

She worked as a cashier at the “Thunderbird Cafe”, at “Sacred Canyon Lodge”, Canyon de Chelly. I was struck by her looks. Alas most of the Navajo women do not look like this, So she stuck out even more. Even Deanna commented on how pretty she was. She too let me take her picture. She thought it was funny. But she also admitted that people would often comment on her looks. That is good.

Antonio Carroll, Canyon de Chelly — artist, raconteur and ambassador. We met him at the first outlook, on Day 1. He engaged us in a conversation as soon as we stepped out of the car. Very nice guy, very talented. There was no way Deanna was leaving without buying one of his pieces. We ended up with two because he took a liking to Deanna and gave her an offer that even I could not refuse.

Very nice, jewelry maker, who we met on our third day, while touring the northern rim of Canyon de Chelly. Yes, Deanna bought jewelry for herself and the girls from him. He insisted on having his picture taken with us.

The Diné. Lovely people. ‘Navajo’, as at least three of them pointed out to us, quite forcibly, is the ‘Spanish’ or ‘white’ name. They like to be called Diné.

I started spending time in the Indian reservations in Arizona from my very first visit in 1980. When I was 30 pounds heavier than I now am I looked like a Navajo. The first time I visited Canyon de Chelly, in 1986, the locals would often talk to me in Navajo and be surprised when I could not talk back.

Lovely people. I am very fond of them. Deanna took an instant shining to them. We spent a lot of time chatting with them on this trip. We gave rides, on two separate days, to two different female hitchhikers, one old, one young. They hitchhike a lot because many don’t own any transport. In the case of the latter we drove 22 miles out of our way! It was 2pm, it was hot and she was, at best, in her late teens. She didn’t say much. The older lady, a mother of eight, talked non-stop. Told us all sorts of things including stories about rattlers and how one of her sons got bitten by one on a fishing trip.

Just wanted to share these pictures with YOU. Enjoy.

A fair number of people came. They really liked Saad’s and Hassan’s work. The food was good and very little was left at the end. He even sold one of his big pictures — the one depicting Concord, with the golden State House dome! Always the mark of a successful reception.

The New Durham Public Library Exhibition is from January 14 to February 14, 2014.

I think there are 10 or 11 pictures on display — three by his son Hassan.

There will be a reception, with Saad and Hassan, at the library,
at 5 pm, on Friday, January 24, 2014

Refreshments will be available.

Some of Saad’s smaller works will also be on display that day.

See you there. It will definitely be rewarding.

Some of the Saad pictures on display

hassanThree of the Hassan paintings on display. Hassan is 18 years old now and a Senior at Concord High.

These are pictures of him and his girlfriend.

Here is his face, from September. Check how well he captures his own face.

Check the similarity with El Greco (below) with his use of the elongated neck. He had never heard of El Greco.

Nope. Not Hassan yet, but an El Greco with that trademark elongated neck.
