Adoptive Parents got married August 27, 1952 (68-years ago).

I have spent TOO much time in the U.S.

I try to mark this day, viz., August 27, every year with a post. To be honest it is only meaningful to I and I am the only one that cares,

Wow. I left Ceylon 53-years ago. As I get older the percentage of my life I spent in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) shrinks.

Left from Katunayake Airport which in 1967 was pretty small — just one, ‘one-room’ building. Quite a few people came to see us off. It was night. I think the flight left around 9pm. We left on a Pan Am 707. My first time in a jet — though I had flown quite a bit on DC-3s. I had always liked the 707 and it is still one of my favorite planes today. First stop, for a day, for Athens, Greece.

44-years, to the day, I walked into IBM! Wow. Much water has flowed under the bridge in Romsey.

P.S., Lord Mountbatten’s assassination was on August 27 — in 1979. I was still at Hursley and remember it well.

“Ides of March” (March 15, 2016) — There Has Never Been A Google Doodle.

I gather that there is a growing realization (thankfully) that IF not for good ol’ Shakespeare (whoever he or she may have been) ‘Ides of March‘ would never have gotten the recognition that it has got.

“Ides” just meant the middle of the month. ‘Ides of March’ — middle of March. That was it.

The early Roman calendar, c. 750 BCE, thought to be a lunar-based, had three fixed points for each month: Kalendae (Kalends), Nonae (Nones) &Idus (Ides).

Kalends (from which we got ‘calendar’) was the first day of the month.

Nones, thought to represent the half-moon, fell on the 5th or 7th of a month and was the 8th day BEFORE the ides!

Ides, thought to represent the full moon, fell on the 13th day of months with 29 days, and on the 15th day of months with 31 days, i.e., March, May, July & October.

Interesting that Google has never done a Doodle for the ‘Ides of March’. I guess they think of it as falling into the ‘taboo’ political arena. Plus it has an assassination — something that should not be glorified.

Colonel Henry Steel Olcott [2 August 1832 – 17 February 1907], born in New Jersey, an officer during the Civil War, and a member of the committee that investigated Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, is NOT a well known figure in the U.S.

Not so in Sri Lanka (once Ceylon).

Henry Steel Olcott is a well known and well respected legend. His greatest and justified claim to fame is that he founded a number of Buddhist schools in Ceylon, my old alma mater, Ananda College, in Colombo, with 6,000 students in my time [i.e., 1958 to 1967] and now [per Wikipedia, 5,000], the largest. We were ‘taught’ about Olcott and his picture hung in the school (and I must admit that he comes across as being a bit scary, when you are a 6-year old boy in shorts, not used to men with such luxuriant beards).

Olcott other claim to fame was that he, with his ‘good friend’, Russian-born Helena Petrovna Blavatsky [1831 – 1891], converted to Buddhism in Ceylon — at that time the highest profile Westerns to do so. They were also the founders of the (to me the always very strange and confusing) Theosophical Society.

Anywho, I just thought I would share this with you. Checkout the Theosophical Society. It might appeal to YOU.

I happened to see this yesterday on Wikipedia when I was looking up dates for Ceylon’s (now Sri Lanka’s) ex-Prime Minister Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike.

It just cracked me up (and then reminded me of the agonized hand wringing that took place 56 years ago).

“… his assassination by a Buddhist robe wearer in 1959”.

A “Buddhist robe wearer”?

The assassin was a well known, relatively senior Buddhist MONK.

That was why he was a “Buddhist robe wearer”. He wore Buddhist robes BECAUSE he was a genuine Buddhist monk.

Say it. To obfuscate with words like that is just silly and sad.

Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike was shot and killed by a Buddhist monk. Period.

Click to ENLARGE and read here. Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S._W._R._D._Bandaranaike

The Wikipedia entry for S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike goes onto say, quite clearly, that the assassin was a Buddhist monk. So why the “Buddhist robe wearer” nonsense?

The Wikipedia entry for Talduwe Somarama, in addition, even calls him ‘thero‘ — which means a Buddhist monk!

So this is all rather silly and makes the Sri Lankan Buddhist look quite immature.

I remember Mr. Bandaranaike assassination, though I was but 6. I remember the funeral. I followed the trial of Somarama with great interest. I wanted him hanged. He had killed my Prime Minister. Given the circles I traveled in those days, I knew at least two people who visited with Somarama in prison. I remember grilling them about their visit, what they saw, what he had to say etc. I also remembered that he gave up his robes before he was hanged. That was a BIG deal. They didn’t want to hand a Buddhist priest. I also used to know the chief hangman — at the time! Yea. I moved in a rather interesting circle. Not many people we didn’t know. I had FORGOTTEN that they said that he had become a Christian two days BEFORE he was hung. That was Ceylon. Not much has changed when it comes to stuff like this. Talk about … FUNNY.
