Comet, 45P, Will Make 17th Closest (Known) Earth-Comet Encounter On February 11, 2017.

comets

Nothing to get too excited about. For a start, this same comet, 45P (where the ‘P’ indicates that it is ‘periodic’), flew by, even closer in 2011.

7.72 million mile separation is pretty respectable — 32x GREATER than the distance to the Moon.

So, don’t panic. Plus, it is quite a small comet, maybe a MILE across, max.

You may hear in the media that this the 8th closest approach by a comet. That is 8th closest as of 1950s when we really got good at measuring these distances — and you have to ALWAYS add, ‘KNOWN’.

This comet, 45P, even at this distance is unlikely to be naked eye visible!

So think of all the comet flybys our ancestors would have been oblivious to.

Also remember we are talking comets. Asteroids routinely whiz by much closer — as say did 2000EM26 in February 2014, with just 2.1 million mile separation.

The Misleading Offers To “Name A Star” For A Loved One For Valentine’s For $58 by ‘Star Registry’.

I heard the ‘name a star for your loved one’ commercial on the radio — ahead of this weekend’s Valentine’s Day — a few times tonight and it irked me. If not a scam outright, it is deceiving innocent people who don’t realize that you can’t pay for the privilege of naming a star. You probably could and should spend the $58 on something more tangible.

This article explains the clever wording around the ‘U.S. Copyright Office’ registration claim. They enter all the names in a book, and when they have a few thousand names in that book, they register that book! The name is in the registered book, but it is the book that has been copyrighted not the name per se.

Now, as we talked about on January 24, 2016, David Bowie definitely has an asteroid named after him.
That is legit.

Hoped For ‘Planet X’, The Ninth Planet, CAN NOT Be Named After David Bowie. Period.

by Anura Guruge

Contrary to what many realize the officially recognized names of celestial bodies are carefully governed and assigned per some very strict guidelines maintained by the ‘International Astronomical Union’ (IAU) — an organization recognized by 74 world powers.

To have the supposed ninth planet (or any other planet in our Solar System) named after David Bowie he would have to be deemed a god.

Yes, there are those that will avow that David Bowie is a god. But, alas, that alone is not enough.

To be considered for planetary naming honors the god ALSO has to be a well established very long term player, such as Venus, Mercury, Jupiter or Saturn, and it has to be a MYTHICAL god. David Bowie is not mythical. So he is ruled out forever, forever.

The current convention is that Dwarf Planets are also named after mythical gods/goddesses THOUGH they don’t have to be, for obvious reasons, as towering as those assigned to the planets.

Comets, if named, are named after the discoverers or the ‘team’ that discovered them. David Bowie did not discover any comets.

Giving stars official names is now in decline and as with planets/dwarfs any and all OFFICIAL names assigned have to be mythical characters.

So the only option for having a (non-satellite) celestial body named after Bowie is to name an asteroid after him — and that has already been done! 342843 Davidbowie.

It is a Main-Belt Asteroid and as such is always outside the orbit of Mars.

The 342843 is a sequence number, in that it is the 342,843rd confirmed ‘Minor Planet’ to have been discovered, Ceres (now a Dwarf Planet) having the honor of being the 1st, i.e., 1 Ceres. Pluto now that it is a dwarf is numbered 134340.

The name is optional and is initially put forward by the discoverer of the asteroid.

As of today 701,660 ‘Minor Planets’ have been catalogued as having been discovered. 19,712 of them, just a mere 2%, are named. Here is the list. So to have an asteroid named after you is, of course, special, BUT not that exclusive.

The ‘Beatles’ collectively and individually have asteroids named after them, viz. 8749 Beatles, 4147 Lennon, 4148 McCartney, 4149 Harrison & 4150 Starr. Some of the others include Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Mike Oldfield, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Bee Gees, Buddy Holly etc. etc. Here is a list.

So David, as is due, has been honored as a ‘spaceman’.

The Supposed New 9th Planet, The Latest ‘Planet X’, Might Actually Be A ‘Binary Dwarf’.

by Anura Guruge

planetxxxxx

Check out this 2:10 minute YouTube video by the ‘Science Magazine’ for the QUICKEST & BEST introduction to this supposed 9th planet — the NEW ‘Planet X’.

CoverJPGIn astronomy a ‘binary’ object is an object made up of two objects orbiting around each other. Pluto in reality is a BINARY DWARF; Charon its largest moon in essence a twin rather than a moon per se. So Pluto-Charon is a Double Dwarf.

My feeling is that this new Planet X, if there is one, will also be a Double Dwarf rather than a single planet.

In case YOU are wondering why I might even know anything about this, do NOT forget that I have written a book about “Dwarf Planets” not to mention Comets and Asteroids.

I am, and have been for decades, a great fan of ‘National Geographic’. It is one of the few magazines that we continue to subscribe and do so without fail.

I dived into the July 2013 cover story about the ‘Solar System’ as this is very germane to the work I have been doing on 4 Vesta and Comet ISON (C/2012 S1).

There is at least one huge howler that tungsten and titanium nitride could only have been created by the Sun. WRONG.

So, for the first time in my life I wrote a letter to the Nat. G. Editors.

They did it after I e-mailed them requesting same on January 26, 2012.

They have been doing Google Doodles since 1998. This is the first time Sri Lanka has got a Doodle.

So, so much for all the supposed influential Sri Lankans …
and I am not even Sri Lankan anymore!

I am happy for Sri Lanka.

María Elena Walsh (1930 to 2011) was an Argentinian polymath, best known her children’s books and songs.

Leonid Iovich Gaidai (1923 to 1993) was a director of Russian comedies, though that sounds like an oxymoron to me.

This is pretty neat and it is a impressively bold doodle. Bravo.

For today, January 31, 2013, you will be able to see it by going to the Google default search page
or by clicking on a Google icon. It doesn’t appear on all of the small,
Google header icons [e.g., top of Google News].

My latest ‘academic interest’ is Google Doodles. I remember my father lamenting in 1967 that his University (at that time), State University of NY at Buffalo (SUNYAB), was letting a student do a Ph. D. on ‘The Art of Reversing Trucks‘. Well, Google Doodles warrants as much study.

As with so many things that have ruled and defined my life, whether it be SNA, Portals, Popes or Asteroids/Comets, I serendipitously stumbled upon Doodles — just 10 days ago, around 12:40 a.m. in the morning, with the Zamboni doodle. It has transformed this blog. Check the ‘Blog Stats’ on the sidebar >>>>. We started the year at 32,600.

Anyway, I am now studying Doodles. Quickly worked out that there has never been a Doodle about Sri Lanka. So, I e-mailed them hoping to have that rectified.

Also nothing for Mrs. Bandaranaike. Told them about that too.

So, we will wait and see.
