Time In Fractional Day As Used In Astronomy (e.g., MPC)– Excel Spreadsheet For Conversion (Both Ways).

What my Excel spreadsheet looks like. It is converting ‘.67810’ into a time format we can understand.


Time that comets are discovered are specified in this ‘fractional day’ format.

So, for example, time when C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) was discovered per the ‘Minor Planet Center’ (MPC).

The .67810 used above is FROM this example.

I had trouble deciphering this time format. I had to seek help from a professional astronomer — Jeff Mangum. [Thank YOU, Jeff.]

I then dashed off a quick Excel for MY use. Then I decided I should create a version that I can SHARE.

Yes, of course, I could make it a download — but many would be leary of downloading it. So, intead, I am sharing the simple Excel formulas you will need to create your own. Yes, it can be made simpler. SMILE. I just wanted to show YOU the steps so you could see where I was going. SMILE. Plus, I am, at 67, not the hotshot programmer I was when I was in my 20s. SMILE.

Fragments Of Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) Start To Brighten, Per Ace Comet Hunter Terry Lovejoy.

The first set of imaging is by veteran comet hunter Terry Lovejoy — who has discovered 6 comets. He knows his stuff & his forte is astrophotography. His pictures show that one fragment has brightened noticeably. This could be because it is getting ever closer to the Sun and as such continuing to become more ‘active’ — i.e., ‘evaporate’ giving out gases.

The comet has definitely fragmented. Of that there is no doubt or debate. The ‘orange’ Hubble picture shows 4-fragments and JPL (2nd image) already lists 5.

As the orbital diagram shows the ‘comet’ — or to be more precise — the fragments are still a longways out and we are moving away.

The fragments may be bright, but they are SMALL. So naked-eye visibility is questionable.

C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS), as I told you last week, has started to fragment.


Some very clear & graphic imaging on C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) from Hubble.

You can clearly see that it continues to break-up. It will NOT be naked-eye visible. SORRY.

Hopefully C/2020 F8 (SWAN) will step in. I am keeping an eye — quite literally.

Think first, then research, then THINK again. Think for the pleasure of thinking.


Yesterday’s ‘Think’360° in a circle. It has to do with the first (and most important) circle that our ancient ancestors, around 4,000 B.C. (or even earlier) had to contend with — and QUANTIFY. The circular orbit of the Sun (with the then belief that the Sun circled the Earth). 360° comes from the 365-days in a year. They had worked out, through very diligent observations of the seasons and stars (particularly the rising of the ‘Dog Star’ ‘Sirius’) that a year was around “360” days. I actually think they had nailed down the 365-days quite early on. BUT, in my opinion, they ROUNDED the 365 to the EASIER ‘360‘. 365 is not very divisible — and our early ancestors, thanks to sharing food, knew how to DIVIDE. Other than ‘1’ and ‘itself’, 365 only has two divisors: 5 & 73. You can’t divide it by 2, 4, 5 or 10. And then there is 360 which is hugely divisible: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 24, 30, 36, 40, 45, 60, 72, 90, 120 & 180. BINGO! Did you like that?

360360º in a circle (as opposed to say 100 or 200)? Why? Where did it come from?

Yesterday’s ‘Think’: How many stars can you see naked eye? Lot depends on your own eyesight, where you are and light pollution. There used to be a general consensus that it was (on average) around 3,500 stars. Best case, it would never be over 6,000. But now we have a more definite answer thanks to Yale University professor, Dorrit Hoffleit. She counted all the stars up there with a ‘visibility index’ (so called ‘apparent magnitude’) of 1 to 6.5 — the normal range associated with naked eye visibility. She found a total of 9,096 across BOTH hemispheres, i.e., North & South. So that gives us (roughly) 4,548 a hemisphere. So, the original 3,500 wasn’t a bad guess and probably still holds true given eyesight variation AND increasing light pollution.

A recent report that there was a supposed ‘explosion’ on ISON, C/2012 S1, and then the report yesterday of C/2012 X1’s explosion, has again reignited the year-old mumbo-jumbo that ISON is Nibiru and it is set to destroy the Earth.

This is rank garbage.

The supposed ‘explosion’ on ISON was just a normal gas OUTBURST when a new vent opens up on the surface as it gets closer to the Sun. That is par for the course. Think ice-cube in microwave. It was NOT hit by a large asteroid — which, yes, could have changed its course. ISON’s course has not changed.

On November 2, 2013 as it first crosses the Earth’s orbital path it is going to be a long, long, long, long, long … long way away from Earth — like 1.2 TIMES the Earth-Sun distance! Yes, it is going to be 1.203 AU out. That is 111.8 MILLION MILES (and even further out in stupid Kms). So, no danger there.


Then we have perihelion on Thanksgiving Day.

5 scenarios of what can happen then.

It is after that, hopefully on Boxing Day, that we will have the closest fly-by.

But IF it survives perihelion ‘intact’ it will breeze by 39.9 MILLION MILES AWAY.
