Fragments Of Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) Start To Brighten, Per Ace Comet Hunter Terry Lovejoy.

The first set of imaging is by veteran comet hunter Terry Lovejoy — who has discovered 6 comets. He knows his stuff & his forte is astrophotography. His pictures show that one fragment has brightened noticeably. This could be because it is getting ever closer to the Sun and as such continuing to become more ‘active’ — i.e., ‘evaporate’ giving out gases.

The comet has definitely fragmented. Of that there is no doubt or debate. The ‘orange’ Hubble picture shows 4-fragments and JPL (2nd image) already lists 5.

As the orbital diagram shows the ‘comet’ — or to be more precise — the fragments are still a longways out and we are moving away.

The fragments may be bright, but they are SMALL. So naked-eye visibility is questionable.

Hubble Imaging Shows Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS), Alas, Continuing To Fragment.

C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS), as I told you last week, has started to fragment.

Some very clear & graphic imaging on C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) from Hubble.

You can clearly see that it continues to break-up. It will NOT be naked-eye visible. SORRY.

Hopefully C/2020 F8 (SWAN) will step in. I am keeping an eye — quite literally.

C/2020 F8 (SWAN) definitely has promise & potential. But, you saw what happened to C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS). So, let’s give this one another couple of weeks before we get too excited. Yes, I will, of course, monitor progress and keep you posted. Promise. We will definitely know by end of April.

A brand new comet, discovered in March 2020 — hence the ‘2020 F’ (6th half-month of 2020).

SWAN denotes that it was found by the Solar Wind ANisotropies (SWAN) instrument of the SOHO spacecraft studying the Sun.

Its perihelion date is May 27, 2020.

It could become naked-eye visible in a few weeks. I will keep YOU posted. Promise.

Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) Unlikely To NOW Be Naked-Eye — It Is Breaking Up.

SHAME.

But, I did say, very clearly — DO NOT GET YOUR HOPES UP.

I was hoping. I would have liked to have seen another naked-eye comet. The last was 23-years ago! That is too long.

There is a WHOLE generation, in the Northern Hemisphere, that have never seen a naked-eye comet. (Yes, there have been a FEW in the Southern Hemisphere.)

That it started breaking up this far from the Sun is incongruous. But, it is travelling at breakneck speeds, getting faster by the second.

Well, that was THAT. SMILE.

Wait for another.

Waited 7-years for this.

‘COVID-19 Comet’ The Nickname For C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) Which Could Light Up The Skies In May — As The Virus …

It is common to give major comets nicknames based on when they will make their appearance. So, we have had: ‘great March comet‘, ‘Christmas comet‘, ‘Thanksgiving comet‘ etc.

Well, the expectation is that C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) will start to peak around May 2020. That will also be when COVID-19 is really making its mark in the U.S.

With luck, the ‘COVID-19 Comet‘ will be a distraction. A heavenly sign that things are coming to an end.

Whatever, there is no other apropos name for this comet, C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS). It has to be the COVID-19 Comet.

This comet looks promising BUT when it comes to comet so many let you down badly. Remember, remember my great comet, C/2012 S1 (ISON). See one of my diagrams below.

We have had a couple more since that failed to deliver on their promise.

C/2019 Y4 is currently around the orbit of Mars.

In a month’s time it will be getting close to us as the top diagram shows.

I will keep you posted. Promise.

If you are interested in comets check my COMET book (below) and here.

Comet ISON IF it had rounded the Sun — rather than getting FRIED by it, because it went so close.

I had an e-mail this morning from one of my (many) cousins in Sri Lanka that he had visited the ‘Book Ship’ “Logos Hope”, at the (famed) Colombo harbor, and had bought himself an Atlas. He asked me whether I was familiar with the ship. I was not. I knew of the various floating universities, and even remembered visiting one in that very same harbor, 50 years ago.

He, as is his wont, send me an URL to a local newspaper with a story about the ship.

Being the cynical soul that I am, I needed more ‘G2’ especially given the name. So, as is my wont, I Googled it.

Wikipedia, had all that I needed to know:

All was clear and I fully understood the motivation and name.

I find it amusing that the ‘Daily News‘, that used to be quite a newspaper when I was young (albeit that being 50 years ago), totally missed the point.

My cousin too had not noticed. Not that it matters.

Missionaries, of all flavors, have been visiting Sri Lanka, with mixed success for nearly 3,000 years. All the major religions in Sri Lanka are obviously imports, viz. Buddhism (˜70% I think), Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. We don’t have many from the Judaic persuasion as this true story (retold by me (and you really must read it)) exemplifies — though there is a movement afoot (supported by a couple of my cousins) to prove that the (last) Buddha was born in Sri Lanka (as opposed to India). Yep, pigs will fly. My ‘immediate’ family, though I now realize I was adopted (actually a mix up at the hospital à la ‘The Other Son, was a mix of Buddhists, Baptists and Catholics, with my surrogate father (as opposed to my adoptive father), a Baptist.

OK, I will confess. Efforts to evangelize Sri Lankans, into any religion, bothers me. As the newspaper article indicates we tend to me ‘trusting’ folks, easily swayed. It is like giving candy to kids. But … My cousin was happy. He paid about $5 (in Rupees) for an good world Atlas from the U.S. He got a deal.
